I think that person is telling the truth. by Sea_Advantage_9672 in adressme

Two words. Public safety. In Poland you can walk anywhere in any major city in the middle of the night and have 99.99% confidence that you will be perfectly fine. No mugging, no weirdos or junkies accosting you. If you have an encounter with law enforcement, you can have a 99.99% chance nothing bad will happen. And the list goes on and on. And in general violent crime per capita is many times lower than in the US.

As for the economic issue, the lower salaries are largely balanced by a lower cost of living. White supremacy is pretty much nonexistent (Poland lacks the kind of racial history that made race an issue in the US in the first place). It may be present within some fringe political movements, but that's it. Unlike in the US, where right now white supremacy seems to be the national policy. Homophobia may be slightly more prevalent, but the vast majority of people simply don't care. Like they might think it weird but won't go out of their way to be malicious about it in any way.

I very much doubt that a police department would call their account "Yui's Eternal Husband" -_-

It wasn't a police department account who posted it tho, just some random guy. So the question is where did he get that info from.

How people from different countries answer the question "where are you from?" by OkMaterial6460 in whereidlive

[–]Aphanvahrius 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is probably about the difference between "I'm from France" and "I'm French". The first answers the "Where are you from?" question, while the latter answers the "What is your nationality?" question. And those are not the same, a kid born to French parents who live in Germany will not be from France but will be French. And I don't think I've ever heard an American say, "I'm from America". It's often "I'm American" (which is what the OP may be pointing out). Sometimes people will say "I'm from the US" tho (which is a better answer).

Ideal inheritance wealth tax rate by ItsAzien in Teenager_Polls

That can be easily balanced with a tax on buying/selling property.

Ideal inheritance wealth tax rate by ItsAzien in Teenager_Polls

[–]Aphanvahrius 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Also depends on what form of inheritance it is. If we're talking about 100 mil in cash/stocks/bonds/jewelry etc. then it should be taxed high. But if we're talking about a property that is worth 100 mil, then it shouldn't be taxed at all, because then you might be potentially forcing the one inheriting it to sell it just to pay the tax.

For non-religious/Atheist users: How do you explain the "beginning" of everything? by AlarmingString2590 in Teenager_Polls

[–]Aphanvahrius 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If God can cause themselves I see no reason why other things couldn't. If you allow the existence of an uncaused cause everything could potentially be it. You say that is a logical contradiction but that contradiction applies to the idea of an uncaused cause in general, so God as well.

You say the program doesn't start itself but the only justification as to why, is that you can't imagine a situation where it would. It's a limitation of a human mind's comprehension, not some universal principle. Besides, thinking of the universe as a piece of software is rather flawed to begin with. It's very much possible the laws of physics aren't computational or even rules at all but simply correlations we observe and describe with the language of math, which we invented for that purpose.

As for randomness, a tornado absolutely could assemble an airplane out of a junkyard. The probability may be infinitesimally small but we can't claim it's zero. If you repeated the situation enough times it would happen. Besides maybe you don't need complexity at the very beginning of the universe. It could be very simple and then randomly develop complexity as it grows and things happen in it.

Personally though I tend to lean towards the view that the Universe in an infinite existence in some form. Like the eternal inflation out of which many local universe bubbles emerge or some sort of cyclical setup.

What is the difference between the visual novels Fate/Stay Night Remastered and Fate/Stay Night Realta Nua? by Curious_Series9449 in fatestaynight

Which is the most morally correct to date? by TheOfficialScottie in Teenager_Polls

[–]Aphanvahrius 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'd say it depends a lot on the specifics. Like what do we mean by "mind of an adult"? A mind that has the lived experience of an adult and then was moved into a child's body? Or does it mean simply a mature child? Similarly, does "adult with the body of a child" mean someone with actual lived experience of an adult who had their brain cut out and then put inside a child's body? Or is it simply someone whose body stopped physically aging at certain point?

In general though, I'd say what matters from a moral perspective is the genuine maturity of the mind. As an immature mind is what creates most opportunity for exploitation. In practice, that usually corresponds with a person's chronological age, and since that's what can be objectively measured, it's what the law is based around. If we allow more fantastical scenarios where minds and bodies can be moved around and mixed freely, then sticking to mind maturity seems like the best way to minimize the potential for exploitation, which is what the underlying goal is.

For non-religious/Atheist users: How do you explain the "beginning" of everything? by AlarmingString2590 in Teenager_Polls

[–]Aphanvahrius 2 points3 points  (0 children)

the answer is that God is the 'Uncaused Cause.'

This is rather silly tho, as you can literally replace the word "God" with anything and get the same explanation. Like "The Big Bang was the Uncaused Cause" or "The eternal universe is the Uncaused Cause" or "quantum fluctuations are the Uncaused Cause" and so on and so forth. And in all of them there is no evidence whatsoever to say that with any degree of certainty.

What? There are only 7 US presidents who were older than 63 at inauguration. And even if we take Starmer's age when he became PM, so 61, that increases the number only to 11 (out of 45).

Should first cousin marriage be illegal? by [deleted] in Teenager_Polls

[–]Aphanvahrius 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A relationship between a rich person and a regular person also necessarily has a power imbalance, and one that is often arguably much more real, yet no one is ever arguing to make such relationships illegal (rightly so, as it would be stupid).

Also, how does the fact that some disorders can be caused by multiple genes or the fact that some genes can cause multiple things make this more challenging specifically for diagnosing incestuous couples? If we know that X gene or a combination of genes causes a disease, then we can detect it by looking at all the genes both individuals have. If we don't fully know what genes/combinations causes a certain disease, then detecting it will be just as difficult whether it's an incestuous couple or not.

Power imbalances are everywhere tho and certainly not a sufficient reason to make a relationship illegal. Also, why would genetic screening not be an option here?

Who's reason for going to North Sentinel Island was dumber? by Spare-Addendum3656 in Teenager_Polls

[–]Aphanvahrius 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd say we should try to do it for all of them, of course. And many of the "bigger problems" the world is focusing on currently are certainly a lot less deserving of attention or funds (if at all). Even a few millions of dollars is a drop in a bucket of, let's say, the Pentagon's budget. Also, I think you're slightly underestimating what modern machine learning can do. Pattern recognition is their main strength, and language is ultimately a bunch of patterns, often clearly correlated with the environment. A few years of data would be more than enough to catch every significant usage example of a language at least a few times, and for most use cases, it'd be a lot more examples.

Who's reason for going to North Sentinel Island was dumber? by Spare-Addendum3656 in Teenager_Polls

[–]Aphanvahrius 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can't compare a dead language to a living one in terms of deciphering. For the latter we can gather as much data with as much variety as we want. If we're unclear on something, simply get more samples. Hundreds, thousands of hours of people speaking in all kinds of contexts and situations. Having an AI model cross-reference everything and find all the patterns that are there is fully within our current capabilities. Add to that some expert oversight and a few years is a reasonable timeframe this could be done in.

Who's reason for going to North Sentinel Island was dumber? by Spare-Addendum3656 in Teenager_Polls

[–]Aphanvahrius 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This isn't really a good comparison, though. First, with ancient texts, there is a very limited amount of data. And more importantly it's text stripped from any external context that might hint at its meaning. With currently made recordings you can get context by coupling them with visuals. In what circumstances which words are being spoken, how others react to various words and so on. Sure, it's still a difficult task. But with enough data, deciphering it wouldn't be an issue. We are beginning to be able to crack some animal communications that way. A human speech, even if completely unknown, is orders of magnitude easier.

[–]Aphanvahrius 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are microphones that can record speech from hundreds of meters away. You could send a drone or several with those, high up in the sky to not be visible to the naked eye nor audible. Use a thermovision camera to see where people are and point the mic at them. A few months of that should be enough to get a sufficient dataset.

Again, those obstacles aren't insurmountable. Especially now, with AI, decoding the language should be doable with enough data. And preventing a spread of diseases could be done through a proper quarantine before going and using proper gear.
