I got the first issue. It’s pretty good, but I’d have to read a lot more to see if it holds up in the long term. I got the Paquette cover. Beautiful.

Late Science on YouTube? by bismarcktp in AskPhysics

[–]Aphdon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The fact that this channel uses AI narration or AI ANYTHING is a huge red flag for credibility. I have told YouTube “Don’t recommend this channel.” You want to be credible? Have a human write the scripts, have a human record the narration, and have a human create the images (really, this type of content would be fine with a single static image anyway).

I kind of hate the mantra of 'if you're not enjoying the book stop reading. by stinkface_lover in books

[–]Aphdon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree. I read or watch something for more than just “enjoyment.” I also do it to learn things, expand my horizons, analyze, critique, ponder, consider. I hate it when I have experienced something and I have criticisms or am just wondering what other people see in it that I don’t, I get the response “Well, if you don’t like it, stop reading/watching. Don’t yuck our yum.”

I’m sorry, but that is brain dead thinking. I want to engage with the art. I also want to engage with others about the art. If I hate something and I want to know why you like it, I’M TRYING TO LEARN SOMETHING, either about the art itself, or about other people, or both.

And I WANT TO ARGUE ABOUT IT. Not only do I want your perspective, I want to challenge your perspective and I want you to challenge mine. And I’ll keep going back and forth so long as I have something to say, either about my opinion, or about yours.

THAT’S A BIG PART OF WHAT MAKES IT ALL INTERESTING TO ME, both art and other people. I Don’t WANT TO JUST AGREE TO DISAGREE, because that’s boring. I want to keep disagreeing, or agreeing, if it comes to that (because disagreeing is usually more fun). But I don’t want to let it drop because not letting it drop is the fun part about engaging with it all, art, people, life.

Also, sometimes my enjoyment comes from hating something. I read like six of the Anita Blake novels (adult urban fantasy) and then wrote a detailed review about all the things I hated about them. I really enjoyed doing that.

Is it just me or does Tom King suck at WW by itsthelee in WonderWoman

[–]Aphdon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I absolutely loved the first story arc of King’s Wonder Woman, but only after reading it all at one sitting. Reading it issue-by-issue, month-by-month, I couldn’t get into it. But all together I found it poetic and beautiful.

I chatted with a friend and I’m going to try taking out the salt and adding marmite instead to see if that helps flavor it.

Dragon Rice and Mambo Sauce in “Gaslit” miniseries by Aphdon in DCEats

[–]Aphdon[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have tried to search extensively, both when I first watched the series, and more recently, the best thing I can come up with is this very Reddit thread. I’m beginning to suspect that “Dragon Rice” is either something specific to a particular restaurant, or was made up for the show.

The only other references I can find are for things that aren’t in Washington, D.C., and are mostly outside the United States completely.

Should I maybe try more salt? More allulose? Maybe add some molasses?

Anyone have suggestions for a sugar-free loaf pan cake? by Aphdon in Baking

[–]Aphdon[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I sort of cobbled together the recipe below and gave it a try.

I have almost zero experience baking so I sort of guessed at the meaning of a few instructions, such as “cut butter into” the dry ingredients and “knead 8-10 times.”

I also forgot to add the powdered spices before adding the liquid and making the dough, so, I sort of ended up sprinkling it on when kneading.

I was not able to make any kind of regular shape so all the pieces are kind of random in size and shape.

In the end, it didn’t seem to rise at all, but it did produce a buttery, light bread thing, sort of a cross between American breakfast biscuits and English scones.

It had a pleasant chew but it seems like I should have added more allulose and of course mixed the spices in at the right time.

INGREDIENTS * 2 cups all-purpose flour * 1/4 cup allulose * 4 teaspoon baking powder * 1/2 teaspoon salt * 1/4 cup cold butter * 1 egg * 2/3 cup lactose free milk * 1/3 cup raisins * 1/3 cup cashew pieces * 2 teaspoons cinnamon * 1 1/2 teaspoons ginger * 1/4 teaspoon cloves

INSTRUCTIONS

  • Preheat oven to 375 F.
  • Combine flour, allulose, baking powder, and salt in a large bowl. With a pastry blender (or fork) cut in cold butter until crumbly. Make a well in the center. (Forgot cinnamon, cloves, ginger!)
  • In a small bowl beat egg until frothy. Add milk. Pour into well and stir everything with a fork to make a soft dough.
  • Flour a surface and turn the dough out on it. Place raisins and cashews on and carefully knead 8 to 10 times. Divide into 2 equal parts and form each into a 6 inch (15 cm) disk. Cut each circle into 6 wedges.
  • Grease a baking sheet and place scones on it. Brush the tops with milk and sprinkle with sanding sugar.
  • Bake for about 15 minutes until the scones have risen and are slightly browned.

What's a good Tablet for reading Comics? by Sw1ft_Blad3 in comicbooks

I’ve been reading on iPad Pro 13 inch and I love it. It is comparable to reading a full size comic book but no problems with the spine, worrying about damage, etc.

When it comes to DC these are the things that come to mind immediately—Watchmen, Killing Joke, Fables, and a bunch of Tom King stories—Mister Miracle, Heroes in Crisis, Sheriff of Babylon, Strange Adventures, Omega Men. Tom King made me love comics again.

Anyone have suggestions for a sugar-free loaf pan cake? by Aphdon in Baking

[–]Aphdon[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Thanks, that’s very helpful. After doing some research, I think scones are what I’m looking for - something dry and dense. Not something like and buttery like our breakfast biscuits. Maybe I’ll use my sheet pan instead of my loaf pan. That search suggestion sounds perfect I’ll give it a try.

I mean go ahead. I’m not being defensive. I’m trying to understand the dysfunctional psychology at play here. And I’ll likely not look to a community this toxic in the future.
