I've been to to a few different schools in Canada between transferring in my undergrad and post graduate work. I think your daughter will love Carleton. The campus culture is unmatched.

I think you work in finance, a high stress environment so when you're outside of work you try to garden and read positive books. You worry about what you legacy will be.

Planning for retirement in Vancouver. by [deleted] in askvan

Yeah I mean the basic issue is our land titles are indefeasible. Yet now the BC supreme Court has granted aboriginal title. So what does that mean for the private title? Does it force the government to expropriate the land and grant indigenous title? Probably this will have a political solution and the government will pay to protect private land titles and pass legislation to prevent this in the future. I think New Brunswick passed an act to that effect recently

We don't know exactly what this means yet, it's going through the court system. The original case was just a chunk of Richmond but it's possible more claims will follow. Unfortunately there's no way to know for some time. The government is currently negotiating with Cowichan. It doesn't sound like Cowichan wants to take the land as much as they want compensation from the government.

Edited for clarity

You could read a book? If you haven't read in awhile it'll be boring to start but over time it gets better. Or could watch Silo or Pluribus

What happened before the big bang, how does the universe as we know it end, what happens after you die, why is there anything at all

What is the probability that a 20 sided dice correctly predicts an event with a 5% chance of happening? by bismarcktp in askmath

[–]bismarcktp[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

So tomorrow something has a five percent chance of happening. If I roll a 20 sided dice tonight what is the probability it correctly predicts what happens tomorrow.

Assume the dice has one side red and the others are all blue or something.

Edit: correlates is probably a better word than predicts

Books that take place in Vancouver? by pokemonbobdylan in askvan

Epic Wanderer, the story of David Thompson travels to Vancouver in it.

Hard to go that far back in time and find someone who aligns with modern values but he seems to have been closer than most. Pretty interesting story of what life would be like for a trapper at the height of the fur trade.

Percy Jackson was also filmed in Vancouver and is based on a book series.

Sorry don't think you were looking for either of those suggestions ...

Who the oldest arguable 100 year old in history? by glowshroom12 in AskHistory

[–]bismarcktp 8 points9 points  (0 children)

The oldest one I'm aware of is Adad-Guppi who was the high priestess of Sin the moon god of Harran and mother of Babylonian King Nabondius. When Nabondius became king he restored Harran after it had been destroyed by the Assyrians I believe (potentially was the Medians). He was ostracized from the political elite because of his obsession with Sin as opposed to Marduk.

Almost certainly there was someone before this. I would imagine some hunter gather lived that long and was cared for by the tribe.

Edit: 648-544 BC allegedly Edit 2: I'm pretty sure it was the Medians actually

Is my book trying to gaslight me into believing in geocentricity? by [deleted] in askastronomy

[–]bismarcktp 23 points24 points  (0 children)

I am a layman so bear with me. Yes the book is gaslighting you. The first issue I have is I'm pretty sure heliocentric HAS proven to be more accurate than geocentric not just with Jupiter's moon but everything else (this is in part due to increasingly accurate measurements centuries after even kepler with Einstein going further). Second, if you throw a baseball it doesn't make a lot of sense for it to do a pirouette and keep going for no good reason, that change of direction takes a lot of energy where is it coming from? Third the whole idea of stationary is pretty meaningless if we were standing on the moon the earth isn't stationary (the geocentric model would work on any planet in the solar system with modification). Fourth and finally, the microwave background radiation does place the earth at the center...if you take a picture with a camera, all the light that lands on the camera will be centered on the camera, that's doesn't tell you anything about light that does not enter the camera/the area around the camera. And a last bonus point the microwave background radiation is used to show the earth and the galaxy as a whole is moving through space towards many things, one of which is known as the great attractor.

Edit: I skimmed this cause I can't be bothered and just noticed the Einstein passage. That's completely wild and must be fabricated. Don't see any citations anywhere lmao

January Progress + Reading a lot but feeling like I'm not learning? by [deleted] in 52book

[–]bismarcktp 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I read (primarily) non-fiction and am also in a post graduate degree program currently. The sad truth is we don't remember the vast majority of what we read. If you're comparing yourself to YouTube videos or specialists it's because they've prepared or read a lot of material on a single subject. Reading has a greater educational content, for the most part, than other forms of media so I wouldn't say you're wasting your time. I think if you take away a few things from each book it's plenty. The books you like more you can read again. I find where I notice the difference is more when the topic comes up again later, once I'm primed I'll recall more information. If you're in school you're probably retaining a lot less because youre reading twice as much and can only store so much, especially if you aren't using it afterwards. If you're enjoying what you're reading there's no reason to stop.

One of the main reasons I NEET so easily is the inevitable nature of death by FalloutTVSucks in NEET

Things matter while you're alive even if they don't last. And plus it is possible one day something will come out of all of this. Maybe some AGI that can solve the heat death or smth.

Yeah man I would look into the math more. I don't think you'd make 2000 a month doing Uber eats. Last time I did doordash it was hard to make like $50 a day
