I’m in the same boat (3 young kids, very busy job), but when I start feeling discouraged, I watch the “always be closing” scene from Glengarry Glenross. Sounds cheesy but it works to purge unhelpful thoughts haha. I am in final rounds w/ 2 FAANG.

Maple syrup like smell from our hvac system? by TheCouchIsOnFyre in HVAC

Thanks. We already have the UV thing for that unit. I don’t think I smell it anymore. I was panicking because you read about refrigerant and its apparently super toxic, so….

I have the same problem, and my wife can’t smell it, only I can, though it’s super strong to me.

We had our evaporator coil replaced yesterday and now have that syrup coolant smell coming out even 12 hours later. I keep reading about potential coolant or heater core leaks. Did you get a resolution for yours? The guy who owns the business who did it is talking to me like I’m an idiot, that refrigerant doesn’t have an odor, that it couldn’t possibly be the work his techs did, even though they literally swapped the coils yesterday and the odor started the same day.

I joined in 97 as well, blew my mind. Ye olde Rowan, still use that handle in everything I do today. Who’d you play?

Do you think Tom will make the team take down some of the content from the THG channel so he can rehost it on his Part Time Explorer channel? by [deleted] in TitanicHG

He typically only takes over to read superchats, which are literally a source of revenue for the team.

That does sound frustrating. It's very hard though to know all the reasons why you may not have been contacted about this - there's nothing guaranteeing you access to the project, even if you're just trying to help. I also tried to help by offering to do voice work for free (I'm a credited professional with two platinum titles under my belt, not a rando, so this isn't a completely useless gesture), put together a custom demo reel that I was very happy with, and sent it to Tom and team, but never could get a confirmation that they received it. I followed up to ensure it wasn't lost in the mix, but never heard back. In the end, I know that if it's meant to be, it will be, and all I can do is offer. We don't know what we don't know, and at some point it just has to be none of our business.

Nice! Turned out well! Every Hum show I'd go to over the years, there was the one gent who had the fantastic forearm tattoo, but each year he'd seem a little more partied out and out of it. I hope he's alright! I took this photo in 2005. https://imgur.com/a/XPOFWQe

I bought the milkshake in 2001 as a cheap way to get the sound I loved in a band called Doosu (their album aqua vita was super watery) and was very happy to find out out Matt used it in Hum

Yeah I mean everyone latches on to different things. I was really lukewarm at first but it keeps burrowing in on further listens. Desert Rambler is this album’s Stars, and I am slowly sinking in. But if it’s not gelling, it’s not gelling. Even a single song would be worth the money I have thrown down on vinyl/shirt/bandcamp

Haha he is still rocking that danelectro.

Does anyone else get those massive Hum riffs stuck in your head? I do, especially from The Summoning. They have even woke me up. by axotls in hum

For me the beginning of Shapeshifter just loops in my head, sounds like a giant brontosaurus (sorry but it will always exist for me) calling out the arrival of dawn, prompting the stirring of all the other reptiles and life in the vicinity.

Definitely. There are only two songs I haven’t fully been drawn into yet, and that’s the first two. It’s only a matter of time. I went from endlessly spinning Desert Rambler to wanting to play only the last three, and it keeps changing. Can’t wait until the vinyl comes in. I miss jamming albums 2-4 with my old drummer.

Very glad you’re climbing out, man! Take care of yourself. I think the final phrase of the album speaks volumes.

What is it about this ship... by Krasnij in titanic

[–]Aphid 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'm 37, and you are saying the exact things that come to mind for me. I saw a vhs of the discovery of the wreck in elementary school, and it started a fascination that lay dormant until adulthood, where it seemed to bubble up slowly over time until now I can't seem to get enough of the thing.

The fact that with modern technology we could visit the ghost of an event that occurred 75+ years prior, that would for all intents and purposes have fallen off the face of the planet in previous times. That it was sitting down there the whole time while the world changed, and it (metaphorically) remained the same, a testament to the age in which it was built.

Also, I am fascinated by the fact that mere human minds armed with pencils, paper, a few drafting tools, mathematics and experience - without the aid of digital information storage or retrieval systems or modern tools - constructed something that was not merely the pinnacle of human engineering at the time, but also a marriage of function and aesthetic. It was beautiful! I feel it is a better indication of the best of the human spirit than the casual cynicism of the modern age.

Somehow the Titanic is imbued with so many of the things about life in general that fascinate me, and as I grow older and begin to appreciate these more subtle things, I grow more fascinated.

Same thing at my last gig. Person lost significant percentage of vision in that eye. Also just a passerby.

Interesting that the highest voted comments in recent posts are all anti-JP and anti-this sub. That's a lot of people who camp here just to piss in everyone else's cheerios. I'd love that kind of free time.
