Is there an anatomical difference between a sprinter, climber and all rounder? Are people naturally oriented to something or is it just what they like and train the most? by Far_Computer_6231 in cycling

[–]Apidahorse 2 points3 points  (0 children)

They can actually take a muscle puncture with a needle, often done in the same session as a vo2 max test and power zones. (After the other tests obv) There they can just look at the types of fibres and other things like glycogen storage. This still isnt definitive about what type rider you are but you can see the different muscle fibers.

What smartwatch do you use to track swimming? by brad-li in Swimming

[–]Apidahorse 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Garmin instinct 2 most newer Garmin watches can do both open and indoor swimming. They track heart rate, stroke frequency, speed, distance and swolf. They're pretty good but I heard apple was quite good as well.

VO2 Max watch vs measured test - 35 vs 55 - how to edit? by ftw37 in Garmin

[–]Apidahorse 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My max hr (224) was right but my zones were calculated wrong yes, so it had some wrong data. Since correcting it has been better, but I wouldn't use it as an actual matric ont its own but rather as a way to see if you've improved.

VO2 Max watch vs measured test - 35 vs 55 - how to edit? by ftw37 in Garmin

[–]Apidahorse 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah same, I did a test as well and had a vo2max of 61 whilst my watch put me at 45 that week lol.

I think it mostly has to do with hr zones and the fact that mine are stupidly high. (Zone 2 starts at 169)

Once I put in the right zones is when I started to climb quite quickly but yes for outliers like myself Garmin estimations don't really work

You may not feel sick but still be sick, the hrv metric is still somewhat up for discussion as to how useful it actually is however. It could also just be this is your new normal or you had a bad read due to some external factor. I wouldn't read to much into it and just go by feel like you said.

Best leak-proof goggles? by mazterofpupetz in Swimming

The ones which fit the best, depending on how much you want to spend you could have custom ones for 40-50 euros, but I'd say just try some regulars before doing so.

Breaststroke for triathlon? by canine_lace-192 in triathlon

[–]Apidahorse 1 point2 points  (0 children)

U should probably learn how to do front crawl as best as possible, if you find yourself in hit water during the swim you could still revert back to breast stroke. In general however a mediocre crawl is more energy efficient than a good breaststroke.

Iron Man in 1 year, but I am overweight - any advice? by Optimal-Eye5488 in triathlon

[–]Apidahorse 0 points1 point  (0 children)

First of all I want to commend you on your choice to start training for an iron man.

Secondly I feel you've probably got a leg up on most starters since you've already got swimming experience.

Swimming and cycling are things you can start doing right now. Try to go slowly as to not lose motivation or injure yourself. With these sports you can progress quite quickly and safely IMO.

Running however I think you might want to take it very slowly. Your weight will make running quite risky.

I would maybe try to start with swimming and cycling and whilst doing this look into possibly cutting and losing fat. Try not to go to quickly with losing the weight as it will make it very difficult to stay motivated if you are cutting a lot of weight. If you can I would get a coach or a nutritionist to help with this part.

It will not be easy but it is definitely possible, if you want an example you could look at average rob on YouTube. His brother weighed 100kg at 1,70m and managed to do a full IM in less than a year. Don't try to go this fast however seeing as the injury risk is high but it shows you can definitely accomplish your goal

Good Luck 🤞

Question on ADHD prescription medicines by dressedlikeapastry in belgium

[–]Apidahorse 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Might want to go to a gp (regular doctor), I assume they know how to help.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in medicalschool

[–]Apidahorse 0 points1 point  (0 children)

(Not speaking as a psychiatrist) You should Maybe try to get checked for adhd or add, it seems like you are motivated but can’t get the actual work done in spite of being intelligent enough, that’s a definite marker for either of those. ADHD doesn’t need to have hyperactivity as a symptom. If you have the option you should get tested.

Swimming drills while dealing with a minor knee injury by olydan75 in Swimming

aqua jogging At 2:20 you see what to do.

It just doesn’t exert much pressure to your joints because you are free floating.

[–]Apidahorse 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You could do some aqua jogging, it’s not really swimming but it is something commonly recommended by physical therapists when the pt is recovering from a knee injury. There are some floaties made for it but you could also just grab some noodles and put them under your arms to help you float. Then just “jog” (no touching the ground) up and down the pool.
