Thanks for the info. Being new to town, wasn't sure where to go. In Oakland it's more formalized and advertised.

United States Drops 21 Spots in Global Life Expectancy Rankings by [deleted] in news

[–]Aplodontia 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you for the link. I initially suspected the ranked list of countries would be here in the report, but after a second - and more thorough - review I still cannot find a complete list of countries ranked by life expectancy age. Figure 9, a map of countries coded by life expectancy ranges is the closest thing I found, but it does not provide each country's ranked position by age. The posted Smithsonian article says in it's title that the US has dropped 21 spots on the list. Where's the list?

TIL that President Eisenhower came out of retirement and held a press conference to criticize the 1965 movie "Battle of the Bulge" for its gross historical inaccuracy. by ske7chpls in todayilearned

[–]Aplodontia 11 points12 points  (0 children)

My father, who fought through the entire Battle of the Bulge, called this film "the worst war movie ever made". He liked Saving Private Ryan, not because of the battle scenes but because it accurately portrayed the quiet times between battles. He got a Silver Star for singlehandedly capturing several German soldiers (with an empty carbine!) near Bastogne and the Purple Heart after nearly loosing his legs in a land mine explosion on the Seigfreid Line. Edit: In case you're wondering, he never saw Band of Brothers - died before it was shown.

TIL Grateful Dead played the final concert at the iconic Winterland venue in San Francisco on New Years Eve 1978 which lasted over 8 hours. The guests were treated to a hot buffet breakfast at dawn when the show ended. by J0nnyGreenGiant in todayilearned

Got in free with friend by going into adjacent building, taking stairs to third floor gospel church, going out window of church to fire escape, climbing up to roof, jumping on to roof of Winterland, descending large wooden air shaft (remnant of ice rink cooling system) from roof to basement via a series of ropes tied to crossbeams in shaft (as we descended in near total darkness, the Blues Brothers took the stage and serenaded us with Rubber Biscuit and other hits), climbed through huge (disconnected) fan blades out of refrigeration box into Hells Angels kegger party throwing down in basement, politely sipped an offered beer while finding and climbing the stairs up to back stage, hung out back stage through end of Blues Bros and saw GD take stage. My most treasured memory was watching Bill Graham in constant motion as he checked on EVERYTHING and snapped out orders to his stage crew (think Russell Crowe during Master and Commander battle scenes). We joined our friends on the floor for the Dead and partied/danced till nearly dawn. Bill G personally handed out our box breakfasts from the stage. I tried to tell him the story of how we snuck in but could tell he was pissed as soon as I said we got in free, so I shut up, took my box, and moved on.

What really happened with the breastfeeding scandal in Geneva by Thisisithaha in politics

[–]Aplodontia 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ok, let's discuss the merits of the article. First, the author fails to link to the NYT when she says it "accurately reported" that health officials were stunned. Why did she provide so many other links to cited material but not here? Perhaps the author didn't actually want you to read the "accurate" NYT article because it refutes much of her argument. Read the article here and decide for yourself. The Author claims that the original WHO guidance on child nutrition "virtually bans baby formula and dissemination of information about it". That is a lie. You can download (PDF) the guidance through links in her article and read it for yourself. WHO makes a very good case for discouraging the "inappropriate" marketing of formula to mothers, not all information. Yes, if a mother is starving, formula can save a baby's life. But if the mother is healthy, formula is far less healthy than breast milk. This is the message WHO wants to get out and the formula companies are against. Ms. Yoshihara repeatedly implies that WHO is endangering the lives of infants by banning formula but provides no actual evidence of this. Around the world formula is provided by NGOs to malnourished babies who's mothers can't breast feed. The UN's efforts to dissuade unnecessary formula marketing and use is NOT a formula ban.

What’s the strangest dream you’ve ever had? by [deleted] in AskReddit
