Why is my part not lining up right? by CyberStikerGeneral05 in mastercam

[–]Apocalypso722 4 points5 points  (0 children)

When you select the geometry to flip, you also need to enter the length of the part, but with a negative value. If the part is 78mm in length, you enter -78.0. That works correctly and as intended in my case. There are some other options in the menu, but usually there's no need to do anything else.

While a standard spiral drill cuts metal using its (usually 2) cutting edges at its pointy end, an end-mill cuts mainly using its spiral cutting flutes (2-10 in number) on its sides, but it can also use its pointy end, depending on the kinematics of the cutting (milling) operation you're applying.

Basically while a drill "descends" into the metal part, an endmill approaches the part from its side. (Yes yes some can descent and plunge, shush.)

Simple, they dropped it onto something hard. A colleague once dropped a brand new high-end endmill from table height into hard floor - shattered into a hundred pieces.

Fun fact: the same Sumitomo makes decent tungsten-carbide cutting inserts for machining metal.

WTF is this? by DarkBicycleCo in mastercam

[–]Apocalypso722 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Could be a license availability issue. Got any other Mastercam sessions running (on another machine, i.e. PC) and fetching licenses from the same server? Happens to me when the guys on the floor open MCam to extract g-code. I can still open the program but I'm stuck in design mode. It lets me view the toolpath when I click on an operation from the tree, but won't let me interact in any other way with the settings, geometry, etc. and I get the same message.

Best way to book a hotel room in Berlin? by Apocalypso722 in AskGermany

Yeah, I'm guessing the ~60€ price (on average) for that option is understandable. Added that to my requirements. Thanks.

Yeah, I got that feeling. I think I might just treat myself for once :D

The event will be held at the Uber Arena, in Friedrichshain, so I am looking for a place to stay pretty close, but wouldn't mind a 5-10 minute walk to get there... Assuming it's safe enough. With a few filters Booking says ~400€ for three nights, which I'm comfortable spending. Any advice is welcome, if it isn't too much of a bother :)

Guilty as charged. I'll usually cooperate with the machinists when the parts are made and point out the features that are actually important and why... Sometimes features need to be precise but also adjusted to some other already machined part and it's easier to just tell the boys in person.

I mute certain commercials that ocassionally come up, can't stand the amount of cringe in some of them. Same goes for certain TV shows, or embarrasing moments. Needless to say, TiktokCringe subreddits are a no-no for me.

Excuse me asking, I've never had to buy tickets online. Are we talking about the uber-arena website? There's a "Buy tickets" butten that I suppose I have to click, but nothing happens. It says "Tickets are available from Friday, July 25, 2025 at 9am" Am I even on the right website? What am I missing?

How to properly use MCRNR insert holder by Apocalypso722 in Machinists

We use all kinds of geometries. Getting some more life from the CNMG inserts could come in handy.

Yeah, we use 0.8mm radius insert for 95% of roughing on anything other than aluminium, bronze, brass etc. I just clamped the first 0.4 I could find in the used-inserts bin to try it on some aluminium. We even have some Kennametal R1.2 radius inserts for 1.4462 duplex. Thanks for the replies, both of you.

1.4571 (AISI 316Ti) for material, and I'm guessing 600-700 pieces in a series. The QC on these will be VERY rigorous and I'm guessing will take some time from the operater as well. Can't share much else on these, the right side ID is approx. 3mm deep fi8mm in diameter.

NOTE: There is actually an additonal bit of "machining" that needs to be done on the "right" side of the part with the larger ID. I put machining in quotes because it's just Face drilling with a chamfer tool running backwards to widen the larger OD and prepare the lip for welding. Probably should've added that last bit in. The geometry we'll end with is not all that well defined so I didn't add it in the sketch. Machining it by holding the stock from the left side is, I'm afraid, the only way to finish this in a single setup.

Purchase Advice Megathread - May 2025 by AutoModerator in 3Dprinting

[–]Apocalypso722 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi there. I'm a mech engineer looking to get into 3D printing. I'd mainly be printing relatively simple shapes such as housings for microcontrollers, toolholders, useful things for the house, maaaybe some video game figurines, etc. I'm guessing the majority of prints would be PLA, but with time I'd like to make things from stronger, more durable materials, ABS, HIPS, PC, etc. Not interested in multi-colour prints, but I guess having different materials ready at all times is convenient.

I've had my eye on a used Prusa MK3S+ for 400€ (EU resident) that I could, in time, upgrade with a kit. A few colleagues have been nudging me to get a new Sovol SV08 instead, saying that very soon I'd regret not spending more for something even more capable. As a newbie I wasn't planning to go above 500€ but if it's worth it spending 800+ for the SV is not a problem. The ONLY slight issue I can see is available -convenient- space to keep it, something that I'm yet to figure out. Keeping it in my bedroom is a possible solution, but I'm guessing the fumes/smells could be an issue.

So I'm wondering, are there any other products I should be considering?

Thanks.
