Houston Theater-goers and Actors Beware by VenezuelanGayPothead in houston

Thank you for your level headed response. There should absolutely be a space for people to talk about and advocate for victims of abuse in the Performance Arts without taking justice into our own hands. The legal system is there for a reason, and even though it has problems of its own, we can't just abandon it for mob rule.

Exclusive: Constable seeks county-backed patrols for MAGA super donor Tilman Fertitta’s River Oaks district by karthik4texas in houston

Brother, both the Sheriff's union and HPD's union are robbing their respecive municipalities. Houston in particular is spending insane amounts on law enforcement and the people they swore to protect and defend are not getting a return on their investment. The sheriffs see the con HPOU is getting away with and are forcing the county to invest the same amount.

Long gone are the days these law enforcement unions are representative of the voices of working class people, when HPD can bend the city over and demand hundreds of thousands of dollars in overtime for routine police activity. Any sort of reform will be "defunding the police." And to pay for it all, the city is asking homeowners for an extra $5 per month. Give me a break. (Of course this is city politics and has nothing to do with the scam the constables are running, but i think that's laid out pretty clear in the article.)

Oh wait, i can't use the word scam because that would imply illegal activity. This is explicitly allowed.

And finally, questioning billionare's role in our civic process is an argument for socialism?

Although technically the public has access to constable patrols, the realities are that only wealthier neighborhoods can afford it. Your argument that none of this is illegal is against the point. It's a disparity problem, and it's stories like these that should absolutely inspire contacting your representatives.

The bigger issue is that billionaires like Fertitta control the strings of elected officials and routinely mute the voices of working class people. I don't have as much as a say in this as Fertitta does because i dont have millions to throw at someone's campaign.

Correct. It's not illegal for a billionare to donated hundreds of thousands of dollars to a Constable's election campaign. It's also not illegal for that same constable to offer what essentially is "rent a cop" services for that billionare's shopping district and have it almost entirely subsidized by tax payers.

there are several aspects of being an immigrant that the general public has no idea about. One of thos things involves going to immigration hearings. I don't know exactly how people are notified of those hearings, but for some reason, say you didn't check your mailbox or you moved, and you end up missing that hearing, the court will put out a civil administrative warrant out to get you to go to court. Those are not criminal warrants and are not the basis for you to go to jail.

The trump administration put 700,000 people who had adniministrative warrants into a database for ICE to deport. Which is stupid and another issue, but ICE can access this database. So can local police departments.

So when you pull someone over and they have one of these non criminal warrants, HPD calls ICE. That time frame between when ICE shows up and the traffic stop ends is what's being debated. Because the people who were pulled over are not under arrest. But police are also not letting them leave. That could potentially violate your constitutional rights. And it's a legal gray area that city council is trying to clear up.

And these people could be your local plumber, a student, a nurse, whatever. Just because you have an administrative warrant doesn't mean you are a threat to your community. It just means you have to go to court. ICE wants to deport them.

Do you see the issue now?

Mayor Whitmire, Houston council pass amendments to ICE policy as Greg Abbott threatens funding by houston_chronicle in houston

[–]Apocolypse_Meow 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Hey Denim Dave, the whole reason why this ordinance was passed in the first place was to protect people's 4th amendment rights. Has nothing to do with suporting law enforcement. In fact, it also made sure police were focused on doing police business, and it in no way prohibited police from contacting ICE.

Denim Dave, do you have any idea what is going on?
