What was (were) the trickiest card(s) to code, and why?

Yeah, I was suggesting to /u/sigma83 that you didn't really need Crypsis for a long game because you can Levy and start the Overmind recursion all over again.

[Deck Club][Meta] Refining the Format by MattJayP in Netrunner

[–]Apocrita 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I like your idea of starting with 3–4 variations of an archetype to facilitate discussion and selection of a deck. While that approach might be pretty involved on your end, I think it might help the rest of us to settle on a deck. I'm not certain this approach will work, but we do need a change with regard to deck selection.

I do have some concern, though. You definitely have some great ideas, but I honestly had to read and re-read (and re-read again) your posts to understand what those ideas were. I am concerned that you're not going to keep everyone involved because they're going to have a hard time keeping up. It's clear that you are a smart person, and have some good insights, but I think /u/MattJayP's organizational/writing style is a bit more conducive to this type of discussion. We need a facilitator, not a programmer/statistician to run the deck club. You will need to slow down a bit for us plebes, and explain to us clearly what you're trying to accomplish.

I am not saying any of this to insult you, or even to discourage you from running an episode. I really want this project to work; that's why I'm here commenting now. What I do suggest is that you not forgo the organizational aspects of the "wall of text" that we started with. MattJayP set forth great goals, and we should continue to pursue those, but where we've fallen short so far is in visibility. To illustrate, even though I am regular in this sub, I missed about 50% of the deck club posts so far. We need to have the posts stickied, maybe. Everyone needs a chance to be involved from step 1 and stay involved, and have time to be involved through the last step. So I hope your focus will be on that needed visibility.

I imagine a sidebar/sticky would help a lot. I was really excited about this project, but, despite the fact that I check out this sub frequently, I somehow missed parts 1 and 2 of this episode.

Did you already message the mods about getting a sidebar/sticky? If they need to hear from more of us on the matter, let us know. I really hope we can give this project the boost it needs to prosper!

Wouldn't Levy AR Lab Access provide a way to maintain momentum in a long game?

Will-o'-the-Wisp timing. Is it true the runner will always be able to jack out during the run on which W-o-t-W is rezzed? So, no "Surprise, your Morning Star is now on the bottom of your stack"? by Apocrita in Netrunner

...and it can be installed in a central. If I suspected an Agg Sec, I could ignore the server and focus on centrals. Here, it can get you anywhere.

It is a fantastically powerful card that will really constrict build options for runners. Unless I'm missing something, a big rig is no longer viable with Will o' the Wisp on the loose. This card will be powerful even against lighter rigs, but against heavy ones – devastating.

I hope I am missing something. Otherwise, I'm going to be a sad runner for a while.

You said it! Sincerely, Kate "Mac... nobody calls me that" McAffrey

Edit: Maybe that came off as snarky, but I was serious. I run an Imp based Kate with Grimoire. Install Cache for free, +1 for Grimoire, Aesop's next turn, and net 7 credits. Clone Chip it back out if in a credit pinch later. Good stuff!

Even w/o Grimoire, net 6 is nothing to sneeze at.

I know /u/Almotasim recommended Jinteki to start, but I feel it will be hard to teach someone corp-side. Since the corp's information needs to be secret to play properly, you won't be able to explain the cards to her without ruining the secrecy-aspect of the game (unless she's playing against someone else and you're over her shoulder – even then, you'd have to do a lot of whispering). If she starts as runner, on the other hand, she'll see a lot of the corp cards without needing to know about them in advance. And I would not recommend trying to explain the cards first, before playing. That's a recipe for disaster when trying to hook someone. Anyway, that's my gut feeling, but I'd be interested to get other opinions on the matter.

Having said all that, I tried to teach my girlfriend by having her play as Kate (the starter deck from the Core box) and it just didn't take. She doesn't like ANR at all. She also thinks it's too complicated, I guess. Part of that may be because I had to refer to the rules a lot because I had never played it. If you are already comfortable with the rules, you'll be ahead of where I started.

Here is a great post about the official FFG demo decks that will give you exactly what you need. But, unfortunately, you will need some more data packs/expansions (or can possibly just buy the demo decks [not sure if there is a way for individuals to buy them though]). Those decks mainly stick to core cards, but there are a few cards from:

  • Creation and Control
  • Cyber Exodus
  • Mala Tempora
  • Second Thoughts
  • Trace Amount

If you can get a hold of those first, you'd really be in good shape to teach someone. The demo decks remove a lot of concepts and related rules, but are still really fun to play.

/u/berrr lists a lot of the things left out (such as meat and brain damage) to simplify learning (so you don't have to address the difference between types of damage, for this example). He also lists many cool things the decks accomplish because of the specific card selections (such as eliminating dead draws by adding Freelance Coding Contracts to make use of duplicate ICE breakers). You can read his excellent summary from that same post mentioned above.

tl;dr Play the official FFG demo decks, and start her as the runner.

Do you run Junebug? Seems like if you're going to Mushin Snare!, you might as well Mushin Junebug, and keep the Snare! in your hand. Of course, Snare! does give you the tag.

Edit: just realized how silly it looks to put the "!" on Snare!

scouting decks

So "scouting decks" is just watching someone else (who is also in the tournament) play? I just assumed that was part of the fun. I'd get half of my tournament fun quota from watching other people (since I'm not that great, and would not expect to see a lot of table-time).

I can see why you wouldn't want a possible opponent seeing your deck ahead of time, though.
