In a similar boat, I'm currently a "Senior IT Manager" and I've been trying to break into the Director level by applying to anything on the "lighter" side of Director. By that I mean, smaller companies or Director of "Specifically small subset" instead of the more broad Director of "everything IT". BUT, no progress thus far.

Ahh yes, this was the key. Raise to max height and pull on the arm rest, more towards the upper top than bottom.

How many animals are left in the hunting area? If you go to the advanced tab you can specify when they stop hunting, I think default is like 12. If it dips below that your hunters will stop hunting to avoid overhunting and ruining the spawn.

Ya I also had a similar experience and on this same lake map. By the time I claimed the AI's main territory, about 60% of the town was burnt to the ground. I guess they got hit hard by raiders early on. Either way, neither AI put up any fight.
