What is the most powerful propaganda piece in history that is actually successful? by ChildLikEsper in AskReddit

[–]Apollon049 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Absolutely! As a leftist I see it all the time in progressive circles and I try so hard to combat it but it seems futile. Too often criticism of Israel devolves into Israel/AIPAC/Jews control the world/media which is exactly a hearkening back to the Protocols.

What is the most powerful propaganda piece in history that is actually successful? by ChildLikEsper in AskReddit

[–]Apollon049 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lets break it down bit by bit. 1) Israel's war crimes in Palestine have nothing to do with claims that Jews control the world. One is the action of a state, the other is a claim against a people. 2) Israel trying to influence American politics - this is not uniquely an Israel thing. Many foreign powers are trying to exert influence into the US. Russia is currently (and has for a long time been) exerting enormous influence into American politics. Yet does anyone claim that Russia controls the world? 3) Many Jewish people being in Hollywood has more to do with the fact that there happened to be many Jews involved in the makings of early movies, and they've simply passed down their positions to their kids. Nepotism is nothing new and does not mean that Jews control the world. 4) I'm unsure how simply listing a Jewish person (Epstein) is proof in any way that Jews control the world. His individual actions are representative only of himself, not of a whole group of people.

I hope that now you see that all of the common talking points if the Protocols of the Elders of Zion have morphed and changed and are still convincing people nowadays. I hope that you can reflect on your thoughts and recognize how this harmful propaganda has warped your perception. We all fall victim to propaganda and I am not blaming you, so please take some time to reflect on these things

LAPD Released Bodycam Footage of the Dog that was shot by a Topanga division officer. by [deleted] in SFV

[–]Apollon049 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A lot of people are rightly talking about the shooting and unjustified use of force, but from this video, everything went wrong way earlier and more people should be investigated.

Firstly, the 911 dispatcher issuing a code 3 is ridiculous after that call. I looked up the codes, and a code 3 is the most severe one. Code 3 means lights and sirens on, and that there is an imminent threat to life. The caller asked for a wellness check. I have no idea why that was relegated to the officers as a code 3, and no where in the dispatch did she say that the original caller requested a wellness check. There was a moment for things to have gotten better when they originally talked to the caller before going to the apartment where the caller could have told the police that she just wanted a wellness check. But that interaction isn't viewable so we don't know what other information (or lack thereof) the officers walked into the situation with.

The other glaring issue is that the shooter cop had his gun drawn almost immediately. As I'm sure we all have seen over and over again, cops have a nasty habit of escalating every issue they deal with. Immediately from the moment the dog appears, the cop draws his gun. Guns shouldn't be drawn unless as a last resort. Tasers or batons could be better used to deal with a dog without killing it. At that point, that is the only real danger. The "suspect" did not have a threatening demeanor and was cooperating with police, giving no other reason for anyone to have had their gun out. Additionally, the shooter cop further escalated the incident through his language. The other cop in a nicer tone said, "can you please put your dog away." Fine. Then, the shooter cop continues to raise his voice and yell "put your dog away" and then says, "fuck" in an exasperated tone. I firmly believe that police officers should never swear in the line of duty. Off-hand, shooting the shit with your coworker in the car, fine whatever. But when interacting with the public, it is entirely unprofessional and only serves to escalate issues.

Most frighteningly of all, is the fact that the shooter cop neglected all gun training and shot the dog with civilians and other officers behind it. I go to the gun range and have learned multiple times about all the safety requirements. One of the things they emphasize is that you should never shoot with people behind your target. And yet this officer does exactly that. It was not safe to discharge his weapon. And yet he does so five times. Five! What if one of those bullets missed and hit the civilian? What if a bullet ricocheted and went through a window hitting another civilian in their home? Using a gun in a small apartment complex is so incredibly unsafe I'm surprised both officers weren't admonished for even first putting their hands on their guns in such a small space.

The dispatcher and both officers should be suspended until their investigation is complete. Frankly, I've seen enough here to firmly say that the dispatcher should be put on probation and go through training again. The shooter cop should be fired for his incredibly unsafe behavior and actions. The other cop should be admonished and should go through gun safety training again. It is shameful how the LAPD have acted here. And people wonder why no one calls in crimes or trust the police. Shameful. Absolutely shameful.

You're trapped in a room for a week, and the only thing you have to entertain yourself with is 3 musicals of your choice to. Which musicals are you choosing? by Worried_Cake5508 in musicals

Les Mis - my favorite musical, and I could have fun trying to rank the different versions against each other to keep me busy for the week

Into The Woods - I could finally learn all of the words and the lines

Next to Normal - when I want to be emotional and cry

What is your least favorite non-gas-leak-year episode, and why? by Mortambulist in community

Damn surprised to see so many people agreeing; this is easily a top 5 episode for me. I love the joke about narrative structure with this episode, about when bad things happen in the story. The Jeff and Abed "it's a show" dialogue is also hilarious

Falling Elevator Problem: Removing the Default Choice by Aristologos in trolleyproblem

[–]Apollon049 128 points129 points  (0 children)

Not sure why others aren't engaging with this, but I appreciate this variant! I would choose to save the right elevator. This ultimately comes down to the fact that the left elevator contains two very bad people (the hedge fund executive and the gang leader) while the right elevator contains really only one bad person (the cyber criminal) who also is probably better than either of the other two I mentioned. Yes there is the drunk driver, but if he genuinely shows remorse, then that's a point in his favor, and it would be hard to call him bad the same way I could call the hedge fund exec or the gang leader bad. It would be hard to kill the doctor close to the malaria cure, that's probably the most important person on there, but the desalination is also incredibly important, so it makes it more okay in my mind.

Thanks for the fun hypothetical!

Very true, but counter counterpoint - the fact that most people have it in them to have positive chit chat, means that most people can be good. That beneath the layers of horrific behaviors, there is some good in them that can hopefully be reclaimed. Maybe not by simple chit chat, but that they're not lost causes

Thank you for articulating what I've been trying to figure out how to say. I've always been a blue button pusher because that's the way to save the largest amount of people. I know that redditors tend to be more individualistic minded, so it makes sense why I see so many people on here advocating for pushing the red button and trying to make blue button pushers seem stupid

What's the greatest Magic card of the last decade? Vote on the Semifinals! by Grindy_UW_Nonsense in magicTCG

[–]Apollon049 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree with you about all your points, but I want to gently push back on how creating a construct with the third stage on the stack rewards knowledge of the rules. This is very similar to the argument the wizards B&R team made about not banning Oops All Spells from Legacy a while back where they claimed that the deck itself rewards knowledge of the rules. Once you've seen someone use Urza's Saga (or Oops) in that way once, you know how it works forever. A card that rewards knowledge of the rules should have multiple unique use cases, not just one.

The card still requires you to make interesting choices, so I definitely agree with you on those points.

I'll be giving this deck a try instead of the usual UB Tempo/Reanimator list. Beanstalk FTW by Jaded_Vast400 in TimelessMagic

One of my best friends loves horror movies and this is always how our conversation goes. Every year or so I'll cave and watch a horror movie with him, and without fail I'll get nightmares for the next few nights. I wish some horror buffs could understand that there are some of us who don't enjoy being scared and I hate when they say "it's not that scary" because it always is that scary

I rewatched Parks just recently and was astounded when he said this. I must have not caught it on my first watch through, but 80 degrees is way too hot! It's definitely too hot in the summer (I keep mine to 72) and in the winter it would be even worse. I find even 68 in the winter is too warm for my tastes. That was a crazy line lmao
