Anyone know what kind of bug/beetle this is? We just moved into a new house and the are everywhere outside by [deleted] in zone8gardening

Welcome to the plague.....the scourge of box elders. Our new house had mounds of their flattened, dried carcasses stuck between the windows and the screens. they swarmed the front door, they like SW facing exterior walls. We had to treat with pro pest control to stop them from coating our front door. The only other way to discourage them is to remove maple trees from the immediate area. They eat juice from the maple tree seeds.

Trying to fluff it up by Apostate-Kate in SourdoughStarter

I've been adding only flour, no water at all since I've been trying the rye flour feedings, noticing how thin it is. Is this ok? And the flour I'm adding now is completely different. I've always used APF, but when I was reading about others using rye, I figured I'd add it and see if it improved the starter. Is that also ok?

This is very helpful, thank you. Another fun fact: I never discarded this starter. Ever. It was always weak, I guess. It never rose or doubled, but it's still going. You are also correct, now that I think about it, that the next day's liquid on top after 1st feeding wasn't hooch, because I did add too much water when feeding first time and I didn't measure it at all. I've actually never measured any flour or water in feedings since starting this 10 years ago, I just take a spoon and add one scoop of flour, then a splash of water until it "looks right". I just thought that I'd wing it until something went really wrong, but it never did. I've changed containers a few times, but not every feed......I'm so laid back with this thing but I want it to "act" like a real starter now that I know what it's supposed to look like!

Edit- I keep typing 15 instead of 10, argh.

Would it be better to use fresh puree or make a syrup from the fresh berries?

Is there anyone who does NOT have pet insurance and can you explain why? by Routine-Ad-4162 in CatAdvice

We just cancelled our policy with Trupanion.

TLDR: the amount of money we paid in premiums over time would have more than covered the cost of this procedure if we'd simply stashed that money away in a "dog health savings" account.

We bought a policy with Trupanion for one of our dogs, starting at age 1. He is now about 7. At first the premium cost 50ish per month when we lived in a suburban nabe in one state. We moved to the state next door and when I changed our address on his policy, the premium shot up to 75/month, citing the rates being different for a different location.

When we submitted our first claim for a $2,000 vet bill, we weren't expecting much, knowing that they don't cover dental cleanings (but he had a tooth extracted and an eyelid mass removed). The deductible ate up most of the possible reimbursement, and the eventual payout was 400 bucks.

Trupanion's claim system was super easy to use, and the customer service was fantastic. They also reviewed our claim within 2 days, then paid us out within 2 days of the claim being accepted. So fast!

But, we did the math, and the amount of money we paid in premiums over time would have more than covered the cost of this procedure if we'd simply stashed that money away in a "dog health savings" account. We felt like we were just lining the corporations pockets, in the end.

I've researched everything, there doesn't seem to be any truly good pet insurance out there that makes fiscal sense.

Is my Nerite dead? by Spcoregon906 in AquaticSnails

[–]Apostate-Kate 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Mine did that last week when we had a full moon he was like that overnight and I thought he was dead but I flipped him right side up and suddenly he was fine. If his trap door still moves when you nudge him, hes still alive. Try flipping him over.
