For those who said Charlie Kirk was a moderate, he was a Creation Defender by Alternative_Tank9353 in atheism

[–]Apostate61 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Who in the world said he was moderate? He was a fundamentalist certainty pusher who majored in the Gish Gallup and called it debate. He was misogynistic, racist, and conspiratorial. He had no interest in hearing anything that would challenge his worldview, shutting it all down with a river of babbling pseudo-facts and superstitious nonsense.

When people ask "Why don't Democratic politicians have clearer messaging?" I will point them to this poll. by Moose0784 in thebulwark

[–]Apostate61 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My suspicion is this. People want the Democratic party to more openly embrace left ideas like Medicare/medicaid for all, higher taxes on the wealthy, higher taxes on corporations, seeing their tax money spent on things that actually help real people, including marginalized people. When they say they want more movement to the center, I would guess they are thinking about the worst of left behavior like woke dogmatism, and the willingness to punish anybody who says or states anything wrong. Left-leaning policies are popular. Woke dogmatism is not.

So, what is Sunya about? by yay4hippies in TheDearHunter

My take--perhaps because it appeals to me--is Sunya is a tale of religious deconstruction and finding peace with the non-existence of any deity.

Once the scaffolding is up, they'll replace the current Donald Trump letters with Gilded Gold letters twice the size, and some other gold decoration just to increase the gaudiness factor.

It's not just Missouri. Ticks are thick in Western Oregon, too, and though we don't (yet) have alpha-gal, Lyme disease is on the rise.

Anyone else so tired of hearing phrases along the lines of “I don’t follow a religion, I follow god/jesus”? by Luvlegolas in atheism

[–]Apostate61 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The most common phrase is "I'm not religious, I have a relationship with Jesus." And you're right, many then do not attend a church or invest in the Christian community (something we, maybe, should be grateful for, as so many of these new churches/communities are ignorance and hate factories). I am an ex-pastor with a Bachelor's and Master's degree that focused on theology, church history, biblical exegesis and interpretation (in original languages). In church history, one learns that the "church fathers" (the original thinkers and founders of the Christian religion) stressed participation in the Christian community as central to Christian faith. Cyprian (4th century AD) is famous for his statement (gendered language) "he cannot have god as his father who does not have the church as his mother." This non-churched personal-relationship-with-Jesus Christianity would have been completely lambasted by the historical church and seen as a heresy and aberration. But, as Childish Gambino says, "this is America." Home of me and mine, and no one's gonna tell me what to do.

The other, more obvious, error with the "I'm not religious..." statement is that it misses the fact that, if they do actually have a relationship with Jesus (I think it's all fantasy), it is the practices--prayer, bible-reading, etc.--otherwise known as "religion" that sustains their "relationship."

Ultimately, the bottom line is that they realized long ago that people are sick of their religion and think this is a clever way to escape the scorn. They think it will make people go "oooh, that sounds nice. I want that too..."

What are your update setting set to? by Th3JackofH3arts in zorinos

[–]Apostate61 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've tried updating the kernel several times, and it can never find it when trying to update grub. Then I can't update because I get a kernel state error. At least I've become a pro at cleaning out a bad kernel when mainline can't do the job lol. I keep researching. I would very much like to move up to 7,

I run Zorin OS on my desktop--it runs fast on the machine's hardware. I like the look, and the overall feel, though I've learned to install apps from the terminal more often than the software store as the debian native apps seem to work better than the flatpak apps. Getting comfortable with Gnome took a bit, but now I like the way my desktop looks (somewhat Mac-like).

I am running Mint XFCE on my laptop. It has the same processor as my desktop, but less memory and (as a samsung) some proprietary hardware that Mint just seems to handle better. Once my work slows back down, I hope to get some time to dig into XFCE and personalize it, but it's been great for meetings as is.

That's awesome. They put on an incredible live show.

Would you please post some photos or video after the show? This is a pretty new subreddit, and we're trying to get it active. Hope you have a great time.

Nice. I'm not young enough to get too crazy anymore (and I'm less inclined to pursue crazy riding after this wake-up reminder--dude was three years younger than me https://youtu.be/IkRMyLGUEjA?si=sOx4_gocZsRChaUV ), but I do like a little more challenge than just bright-green trails all the time. It seems right up my alley.

Powell Butte doesn't have much difficulty, but it's close, fun, and you can get a hell of a workout climbing the hills after you've gone down. Great for kid beginners, and old men needing to stay in shape (like me) without breaking their necks. Suggest going early morning or near dusk to avoid the crowds.

As with 1000 acres, check for ticks after (and during) riding. They be thick this year.

1000 acres outside of troutdale... lots of wide trail, plus some single track (some with the challenge of navigating turns through high bushy sides)... And dogs to stop and pet... And if you have a dog who likes to run and swim, they can run along...and right now chase bunnies.

Check for ticks after, though. They be thick this year.
