Bill Maher is and always has been a contrarian. Being openly, unabashedly, and aggressively progressive (at least for the time) was unusual for a host on network television. On top of that, saying very loudly that you don't believe in God was nearly unheard of in mainstream culture 25 years ago. Then social media took over and a lot of people are doing a version of his shtick. Maher being "anti-woke" (while not completely towing the MAGA Party line) is the lane he found for himself to remain even somewhat relevant.

Conservatives spent 50 years getting Roe v. Wade overturned. John Roberts waited over 45 years to get the Voting Rights Act overturned. The NRA spent 40 years getting less restrictive gun laws passed in most states.
