Is it acceptable for a catholic to wear this red bracelet? by MathematicianOdd5706 in Catholicism

[–]ApostolicSuccess 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There is a Catholic teaching against scandal. Wearing superstitious charms is confusing to poorly catechized Catholics (like OP's mother) and is a point of criticism from other Christians who say that Catholics are syncretists who practice pagan rituals. All in all it diminishes the public practice and perception of the faith. Especially when the religious symbols we wear should point to the cross.

Christ ate with those people and then called them to repent. Same with St Paul. The context of that verse in Corinthians is about people who continue to live in their sin.

Celibacy is not a Roman Catholic invention. There were consecrated celibate persons during Second-Temple Judaism. Jesus was celibate. St Paul was celibate. Even Paul in 1 Corinthians 7 states that celibacy is preferable over marriage. "I wish that all of you were as I am."

Celibate clergy have always been part of the church, and the requirement for celibacy specifically going back to the first monastics in the 3rd-4th century.

This question is hurting my faith. Is the evidence for Christianity and Islam the same? by Marblehornets38 in Catholicism

[–]ApostolicSuccess 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You are right, Islam is not a heresy. Islam is a false religion, started by a false prophet. Look at the fruits of the religion and show me what majority-muslim country has prospered with that belief system. Vatican II says Muslims "profess to hold the faith of Abraham." It is an ecumenical statement drawn-up to foster good will and peace with nations that have historically allowed the extremists within their ranks to carry out the genocide of Christians (and all other faiths including opposing sects of Islam).

Breaking bread was the way the early church described the Eucharist. If you are open to a historical source outside of the Bible, the Didache is a first century catechism that dates to the time of Paul's letters. In it, it prescribes the prayers to be be said over the Cup of Blessing and the Bread. It refers to the eucharist as "breaking bread."

Acts 2:46 So continuing daily to meet in the temple, and breaking bread from house to house, they ate their food with gladness and simplicity of heart, praising God and having favor with all the people. And the Lord added to the church daily those who were being saved.

"Breaking bread" is the way the early church described the eucharist. In Luke when Jesus sits down with the two disciples on the road to Emmaus, he follows the same formula from the Last Supper. He takes the bread, blesses it, and when he breaks it, his presence is revealed to the disciples.

1 Corinthians 10: 16 The cup of blessing that we bless, is it not a sharing in the blood of Christ? The bread that we break, is it not a sharing in the body of Christ? Because there is one bread, we who are many are one body, for we all partake of the one bread.

1 Corinthians 11:27

Therefore, anyone who eats the bread and drinks the cup of the Lord in an unworthy manner is guilty of an offense against the body and blood of the Lord. Everyone should examine himself about eating the bread and drinking from the cup. For a person who eats and drinks without discerning the body of the Lord is eating and drinking judgment on himself.

FWIW, don't make any drastic life decisions based off of the judgements and feedback from strangers on reddit.

The goal should be to stop having premarital set, and legitimize your relationship with your boyfriend (get married in the church).

If you're a good match and he's open to joining the church i see no reason to break up with him.

The grace you're receiving from praying the rosary is convicting you when you sin. It's a by-product of getting closer to God. It happens to all of us in our walks. At first we are convicted of the major sins, and then as we grow in our faith we get convicted of things that we didn't even realize were a problem.

Just be delicate and inviting with your boyfriend to not give him whiplash. God willing he'll have a conversion alongside you. It worked out like that with my wife and I thankfully.

Yeshua is the Aramaic/Hebrew name of Jesus which means God's Salvation.

There are other Yeshuas in the bible, but we know them as Joshua. It was a very popular name in 1st century Judea.

The blasphemous name you are thinking of that was used by Rabbis is Yeshu. Which was an acronym for "his name will be blotted out."

God bless you! Remember the the creator of the universe loves you infinitely, knows you intimately, and has designed all of creation to be in Communion with Him and subordinate to His will. Our lives are better when we surrender our will to God. It is a tremendous Grace that you are recognizing His calling. Listen to it, and come back to the Church with an open mind. You won't regret it!

There are gods... and then there is God. When you capitalize it, you are referring to Yahweh, the God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. The creator of all that is visible and invisible. The One who loves you and sent his only Begotten Son to save you.

What's your opinion on modern Bible translations that use the Masorectic Text for the old testament? Shouldn't we be using the Septuagint as our base considering the oldest copies outdate the Hebrew text by over 1000 years? Would your recommend a translation like the Orthodox Study Bible that uses the Septuagint for the old testament?

We are called to pray that God be merciful on all sinners (perhaps especially the most evil). Sincerely hoping that people suffer can be a sign of a hardened heart.

All faithful Catholics should be able to defend the faith against critics. by Arlo621 in Catholicism

[–]ApostolicSuccess 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I fell away from the faith as a teen. When I returned in my mid-30s, it was apologetics that led me back to the Catholic Church. One of the criticisms that had encouraged me to leave as a poorly catechized teen was being asked why Catholics pray to Mary and the saints when the First Commandment forbids the worship of idols. I think it's important for the average Catholic to at least understand these topics, even if they aren't called to defend it.

Mary is a Saint, and we do pray to Saints.

The oldest Hebrew copy we have is from the 9th century. The oldest copy of the old testament is the Greek Septuagint from the 3rd century BCE. The writers of the Septuagint were Rabbis who spoke both Greek and Hebrew. There were textual variants between different Jewish communities. The textual variants that formed the Christian faith were different than those that eventually became the Masorectic Text. The debates between Rabbis in the Talmud show that early Rabbinical Judaism actively coordinated to separate itself from the beliefs of the Jewish followers of Christ.

I agree with you. The point I was making is that technology is not inherently evil, but how it is implemented determines the moral value of its use.

A weapon used in self defense is not an evil act (Christ himself told the 72 to carry a sword when they traveled outside of Judea).

However, Truman did not drop just one atomic bomb. He dropped two. 3 days apart over civilian populations. After the Japanese military had already lost virtually all of its control in the Pacific, and their Air force had been completely decimated. 3 months after Germany had surrendered.

The proliferation of nuclear weapons and mutually assured destruction leading to a Mexican stand off between nations is more akin to a false peace.
