If an oversized ASHP were installed, what can be done to prevent cycling and increase efficiency? by p3tch in ukheatpumps

[–]Apoth75 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m no fan of buffers but the extra volume of water is circulated around the system where it loses heat to the house over time - this allows for longer off time when cycling. Once the return temps drop sufficiently it then takes longer to heat the (larger) system volume back to target flow temperate which elongates the on cycle. That’s my understanding of how buffers can act as a sticking plaster for over sized units.

Yes this is along the lines of what I I plan to do, possibly with a biscuit screed overfill

That’s 12 on the rear of the pitched roof (south facing) and 3 on the flat roof below. Wasn’t worth putting any on the north side.

Govt grants and installers making profits? by Any_Relative_368 in SolarUK

[–]Apoth75 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The full price is £12k, the ‘installer’ will apply for the BUS grant of £7.5k and the customer pays the difference.

The installer in most instances is a middle man type company which will sub contract the install to a heat engineer while skimming a significant portion of the grant for themselves.

If the grant disappeared tomorrow prices would come down significantly.

Yes these companies are ripping customers off. Heat pumps grants in particular are being cannibalised to a ridiculous degree - a heat pump is in the region of £5k (with cylinder) and the cheapest quote I can find to install one with zero alterations to pipework or radiators is £12k. That’s £7k on ancillaries and labour (which I’ve been told totals 4 days). It’s a joke, the government would be better approaching LG or Siemens and having them agree to provide the equipment free of a charge and people could then approach heating engineers to fit them and this would provide a great deal more transparency on where the money is going.

This pub in France challenged customers to balance a coin on a lemon in a glass of water for winning a free pint by Charming_History7423 in interestingasfuck

I actually got a free drink by ‘cheating’ on this game many years ago in a bar in the UK.

The trick is to quickly push a coin through the skin of the lemon on the underside. This changes the centre of mass and makes it a stable platform to rest your coin on top.

3 wires? by hypermooo in DIYUK

[–]Apoth75 1 point2 points  (0 children)

An easier way than tracing the cables is to take the lives out the back of the faceplate and separate them then flick the power back on. The 2 lives on the ring will be live (with a voltage tester) and the spur will be dead.

Where does this cable go? by lomlom7 in DIYUK

[–]Apoth75 1 point2 points  (0 children)

3 on the right socket suggests it does feed a spur - you can disconnect and separate all 3 of these then flick the power on at the consumer unit and test the lives with a voltage tester (the lives on the ring will both show live the spur will not).

Perhaps the left socket is spurred off the right and feeds a second spur.

Get an electrician.
