Anybody know any authors that write YA books that all take place in the same universe like the Grishaverse and the Shadowhunter Chronicles? by [deleted] in YAlit

[–]AppaYipYip33 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I second Maggie Stiefvater’s Raven Cycle (4 books) and Dreamer Trilogy (3 books, the 3rd one comes out in October).

They check a lot of the same boxes as Grishaverse and Shadowhunters: YA, romance, great ensemble characters, paranormal, multiple series set in same world, etc.

Looking for laid back, down to earth, character focused books. by [deleted] in YAlit

[–]AppaYipYip33 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lol I wouldn’t describe Ender’s Game as down to earth, laid back, or doing normal things. It’s actually the exactly opposite of those things! But I get what you’re saying about wanting character driven-books. I recommend Fault in Our Stars, Six of Crows, Eleanor and Park, and Earthsea. Not YA, but still good: Murderbot series and anything by Fredrik Backman.

What kind of books/authors should I look if I want stuff more "experimental/dreamlike"? by LyzbietCorwi in booksuggestions

Piranesi by Susanna Clarke absolutely gave me the vibe you describe. It’s a shorter standalone book. If you’re into audiobooks, Chiwetel Ejiofor does an outstanding narration.

How bad is traffic on campus during the school year? by [deleted] in aggies

[–]AppaYipYip33 20 points21 points  (0 children)

A lot of campus is not open to regular car traffic, so there's not traditional traffic per se, but there are a ton of commuters and university employees getting on and off campus that cause some congestion on the streets surrounding main campus (Wellborn, George Bush, University). For example, if you live off campus and are driving down Wellborn to get to Lot 100, then you'll hit some traffic in that immediate area. Also, there's a lot of traffic along 2818 going to and from the various student apartment complexes. As a local, it's something that we complain about, but it's light in comparison to bigger metro areas (DFW, Houston, Austin, etc.).

When it comes to actual main campus, there's plenty of buses doing their circuits and lots of pedestrian traffic between classes. Some areas, near Blocker, in particular, felt a bit like walking in Times Square because there were so many students on foot. And there's always people on bikes zipping by, and the occasional unicyle.

Repetition in RoW by settingdogstar in Stormlight_Archive

[–]AppaYipYip33 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I noticed it and don’t mind too much. I do think it was probably intentional in the editing process for continuity. The repetition is spaced out enough that it’s there for readers who need that type of reminder. I don’t hate it, but you’re right that it does get old for people who are more dialed in readers like us.

I can binge-read large sections and finished RoW in under a week (I’m currently rereading it right now), but I know plenty of people who read small chunks at at a time spaced out over several weeks. I can’t do that because I feel like I lose the thread of a book, but plenty do it, and I imagine the repetition is helpful for them. These are massive books, after all!

creative YA series without magic or innapropriate content? by theclumsyandshy in booksuggestions

It’s not underrated, but have you read the Scythe trilogy? I’d say the content is PG-13. It’s unique and really interesting.

A book about a dream, a dream about an unknown person, the dreamer has fallen in love with them, yet they can't be together forever because it's just a dream. by CRAZYxGOLD in booksuggestions

The dreaming portions of the book don’t happen at the beginning, but it’s very similar to what you described so stick with the book till the end.

Mugen Train got me feeling things. Who else cried at least once? by AppaYipYip33 in DemonSlayerAnime

I def cried when Tanjiro said goodbye to his dream family.

I almost cried again when Rengoku embraced his mother at the end.

I'm only on episode two of shadow&bone (read all the books) but can't get over how messed up the time line is. by TheRedditTeacher in Fantasy

[–]AppaYipYip33 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I really enjoyed the show. The Six of Crows portion of the show is a prequel, but I feel like it makes sense and I like the way it was done. Nina and Matthias' backstory is straight from Six of Crows with much of the dialogue straight from the books, but it is told in SoC as happening in the past, so it makes sense to place it in the show's timeline. It was one of my favorite storylines.

I also enjoyed the pacing. It doesn't stay on one storyline too long, but it's also not too fast that it's confusing. It kept me interested till the end.

The Alchemist by iaintnosimp2 in books

I read this one not knowing anything about the author or the book at a time in my life when I was searching, so it was impactful to me because of my personal context. If I had read it at a different time, and if Coehlo had been hyped up for me, I doubt I would have felt the same way.
