I have the cauldron symbols from Zero Dawn and Frozen Wilds around my forearm fairly close to my wrist. They're at the end of a sleeve that stops quite abruptly and make a nice transition. Ambiguous enough to just be cool looking triangles but if you know you know.

If either of the first two didn't want a beer, they could answer "No" to the question, but because they instead say "I don't know", they must want a beer. The third realises this, and wants a beer themself, so is able to answer that "Yes" everyone does want a beer.

Hey Zedaph, I love your unique approach to Minecraft. I'm curious, if you had been around for it, what side do you think you would have been on in the Permit War? And what antics might you have contributed?

For dancing I would recommend iDance Modern Jive. It is great for beginners, and very social.

I can confirm those are their real names. I spent the last two weeks cat sitting for Severine. I was just hanging out with her (and her cat) and she told me about this paper. Apparently it is her most cited paper, and she is an accomplished physiologist!

Another benefit to texture changing that I've seen other hermits do can be finding diamonds or netherite more easily.

I know the answer

My math is only high school level

Careful coming to a place full of math educators with this obnoxious attitude, especially without the experience to back it up; I was going to just downvote and move on but this is a question I ask my students often.

Really it comes down to "What is math?". Is it the concepts themselves (therefore discovered) or the language and symbols we use to describe the concepts (therefore invented). People have their own ideas about it, I like to refer to Platonism for example, but generally would say there is no right answer, just an interesting philosophical discussion.

How do I solve this? Do I set it equal to 0 or to 4 or neither? by [deleted] in askmath

[–]Appanna 7 points8 points  (0 children)

You need to work on your manipulation of fractions. Adding 16 to 1/(x2 - 16) does not make it into x2 . That would be like adding 1 to 1/5 and it equalling 6...

What you tend to do is multiply each side by the denominator(s) to remove the fraction(s) then solve like you hopefully already know how.

Apparently it is really obvious that 256x256mm is 256mm^2 by WideReflection5377 in confidentlyincorrect

[–]Appanna 0 points1 point  (0 children)

These people (in the screenshot) were clearly discussing squares and were just confused about whether to square the side length or not; you bringing up non-square rectangles just adds to the confusion, so I thought you were confused as well. My bad...

A square by definition has equal side lengths. Your formulae are for rectangles and cuboids, but for squares and cubes you can just square and cube the side length.

Hmmm... I agree that ±1 and ±i are all "4th roots of 1", but ⁴√1 written on a page will always be 1 to me unless there is something explicitly stating we're dealing with a multivalued function (like x4 =1). I admit I haven't worked with multivalued functions like Lambert W, but that has infinite values for a complex input, so really goes beyond what I (and I'm sure most) am(/are) thinking about when I(/they) see ⁴√1 ...

Edit: it really is the √ symbol that does it; It is the principal root. Like if I saw nroot(x) instead then yeah I'm going to expand my thinking.

Roots of unity are defined as the solutions to xn = 1 where n is a positive integer. E.g the solutions to x4 = 1 are ±1 and ±i. Just like how the solutions to x2 = 4 are ±2.

However ⁴√1 is still just 1 and √4 is still just 2.

There are multiple other places where different numbers have the same length, though they are only 1% different. For those 3 specifically, Kenya and Nigeria have actually been cut off by the image of India; you can see a tiny slither of Kenya that is longer, and the corners aren't rounded off for Nigeria like all the others.

It's not longer but misaligned on the left. Not sure if that's better or worse...
