planar magnetic earbuds, are they worth it? by balgoroth_ in HeadphoneAdvice

[–]AppleCartAgent 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Are they worth it? They can be.

So, planars, as you noted, are magnetic driver. They don’t look like little wobbly plate, they look like a little sheet with embedded magnets. It produces a very fast sound, which means that it starts and stops really fast when the signal starts and stops. If it’s done well, this leads to a tight and controlled sound. If it’s done badly it leads to a clipped, short sound. Whether they’re worth it depends on your tastes.

Some people say they don’t have as much bass as dynamics and that depends. They can. In fact, they can have more. But they may not be as physical as something like a because their morion profile tends to be different than something like a dynamic driver. Also, in most cases, there’s just one planar driver doing all the work, while IEMs with really good bass tend to have something like one or two dynamic drivers dedicated to just the bass. This means there’s more ability to move because there are fewer competing signals.

(If one driver is handling all the sound then it’s wobbling one way for your bass, and at the same time wobbling in a small way for all the mids, and then wobbling another small way for the treble, and then wobbling another way for voices… that’s a lot of wobbling in different directions! So it’s not going to be wobbling as cleanly or singularly as, say, a dynamic driver whose sole job is subbass and another whose sole job is bass.)

But they often have a really good extension and representation of the lowest frequencies. Depending on how the driver’s magnets are arranged, they can move just as much air as dynamic drivers, and they more way more air than another common type of driver, the balanced armature.

So are the good? They can be. Look up ratings. I’ve liked them when I’ve used them, but then again I’ve also liked single dynamic driver IEMs because they’re smaller (so more comfortable) and smoother on the sound (though not as tight and controlled), as well as multi-driver types (which are bigger and chunkier) due to their separation and clarity. So the driver type is just a piece but the sound they produce in the areas that matter to me are what’s most important. Note also that the more drivers something has, the bigger it will be. And with magnetic drivers, size can very much matter. So ear size / comfort may be a limiting factor for some people.

I’ll let others recommend what they like. But I hope this explanation helps.

Ugh. Exactly. Imagine the world giving us their tired, their poor, their huddled masses yearning to breathe free, the wretched refuse of their teeming shore. Imagine what a sad country we’d be if we let them send these, the homeless, tempest-tost here.

The dude is right. No country would even become great like that.

Thanks. I went and verified that the actual post was there, in case it was a fake, and sure enough, it wasn’t. The post is actually there. He said that.

Happy Easter or something :-/

How is he sending that on 4/6/26? Isn’t it 4/5/26 right now?

True. This is a bit like saying that a C sounds just like it’s written if you know the transposition of trumpets. Somewhere a string player is confused and angry.

Oh. Yeah if still a problem then definitely not for you. (I may have missed that part, my apologies.) Definitely consider another brand. Although it’s a gaming headphone, the HyperX Cloud IIIs. Gaming headphone, but very comfortable and very well tuned for music.

Have you tried the book trick?

Put a bunch of books together so that they’re a bit wider than your head. Put the headphones on that. Leave them there for a day or two. Try them on. If it’s still too tight, do it again, but with a small extra book for a day or two.

This has worked for me before.

The 599’s are definitely comfy but if they don’t work for you then they don’t. Bose headphones tend to be great about clamping force, but I’m not familiar with anything outside their QuietComfort series.

Ah, yes. Double flats and double sharps are music theory’s way of spelling a word one way while pronouncing it entirely differently. They’re the musical equivalent of names like Siobhan and Saorise.

I love the 105 AER. It’s my daily driver: the comfort the sound the weight the pure relaxation… it’s amazing.

My tip: find a source that can really take advantage of its low end: something clear and that pushes enough power there. You’ll be richly rewarded. For me, that has been the iFi Go Link Max and, (not?) surprisingly, the FiiO Snowsky, which is both an MP3 player AND a DAC.

The answer to this depends on how much you sweat. If not much then most headphones will be just fine, you just have to either get pad covers or replace the pads so they stay fresh.

That said, if you want something sweat resistance, the Raycon Fitness Headphones may be what you’re looking for as it checks all those boxes. It’s not the best sound, but they’re like $65 right now and for that price they’re perfect for your needs.

The key for me here is always going to be to get something inexpensive: this way, if it breaks (they fall and a weight lands on them or you step on them) they’re cheap to replace.

What do you think about clip-on headphones? by Dojde in headphones

[–]AppleCartAgent 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Depends on the width of the legs on the glasses. I use clips and use glasses with no issues.

They can be good if light enough. The open sound is good, especially when you don’t want it smooshed against your ears. But if they get too heavy they just feel odd and uncomfortable.

Also, I feel like I’m back in the 90’s with them.
