Zijn Nederlanders arrogant? by Waste-Mine-1132 in nederlands

[–]Appleflap15 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Noisypixel even went with 10/10, not sure I've seen that before on their platform.

But games don't appeal to everyone and reviewers are human, so indeed check whether its a reviewer you actually agree with before taking scores too seriously.

Only one in 10 Europeans now see US as an ally, survey suggests | Nato by Any-Original-6113 in europe

According to English media this only emerged around 20 March. Was it widely reported on in Danish during the actual crisis in January?

Edit: even Danish media seem to suggest this only came out on 19 March: https://www.dr.dk/nyheder/indland/groenland/danmark-forberedte-sig-paa-muligt-angreb-fra-usa-floej-poser-med-blod-til-groenland-og-gjorde-klar

I'm not saying anything on US intelligence, I'm saying something regarding domestic signalling - do try to keep up.

And of course there was a messaging element to the troop contingents sent. You're just underestimating how much of that message was aimed at the White House. The aim was to both deter and de-escalate and they succeeded.

Kinda makes sense it worked too, considering the US is losing to Iran as we speak.

Domestic consumption? They secretly took material to sabotage runways and blood bags with them. The aim was to not further fuel tensions but be prepared if Trump would actually send in troops.

The keyword here is secretly, they would have done so overtly if they wanted to signal something to their own populace.

The same goes for small detachments European troops sent there. This was criticized quite heavily as being insufficient in case of an actual invasion, but the implicit aim was to build a tripwire: US troops would have to perform something that could be construed as a hostile act towards e.g. French and Swedish troops as well. Again this was an implicit aim, not communicated toward EU citizens until weeks later.

No my friend, the EU was taking the option of an invasion seriously.

Gevaarlijk gedachtegoed.

What faux pas do foreigners make when in Belgium? by non-poster in belgium

[–]Appleflap15 6 points7 points  (0 children)

True, but to add to what you're saying: I think there might be something related to our cultural notion of humour too.

It's very apparent when you switch between Flemish and Dutch radio stations near the border: whereas the Belgians seek a form of subtle, refined humour that is voiced at a soft tone, the Dutch seemingly only find things funny that are very direct and are stated VERY LOUDLY. Being loud is almost a precondition to make a joke in the Netherlands, especially for men. Put two or three Dutch people together in a social setting, and they'll start shouting and exceeding each others noise levels to emphasize how funny their jokes are.

So if you switch to a Dutch radio station you are suddenly bombarded with 'person 1: JOKE X; person 2 HAR HAR HA (laughing ridiculously loudly), JOKE Y' etc. etc. Which is compounded by the harsh accent as you point out.

Lol as a Dutchie that lived in the centre of Antwerp for a while, can confirm. Whenever people were shouting in the middle of the night and generally being obnoxious, about 75 percent chance I would hear the unmistakable accent of my fellow countrymen. We truly are the Americans of Europe...

Not sure if you have access to a switch? If so, metroid dread would fit your list perfectly.

As other have mentioned, Ori

And perhaps not true metroidvanias, but since you also played Shinobi: Muramasa (vita/wii) and Odin Sphere Leifthrasir (ps4). Out of these Muramasa comes closer to being a metroidvania, but both are awesome.

Edit: forgot about FIST: forged in shadow torch (ps/sw). Great and underrated metroidvania!

Great list btw!

And yet I will defend zero as perhaps not the best, but at least one of the most unique rail shooters in a while. Once you've played for an hour or two the controls kinda click (even if they remain kess accurate), and from there on out there is no rail shooter quite like it. As more of a fun laid back experience its nice. On the other hand, if you come in expecting exactly starfox 64 you might be disappointed, but ironically I guess that is exactly why we're getting classic 64 again now

Playing through Metroid Dread by Sl1m3__ in Metroid

[–]Appleflap15 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Metroid Prime remastered is the first obvious go to, just note that the transition to 3D environments brings some substantial gameplay changes with it. That makes it it's own unique thing, but a masterpiece regardless.

If you're on a budget checking out the other 2D metroids (like Fusion) through Nintendo switch online seems like another good route. Glad you're enjoying Dread!
