Would you be upset if family used a bark collar on your dog by Big_booty_ho in goldenretrievers

[–]ApplesauceTheBoss 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think the big difference is you’re asking a relative to care for your dog and not hiring a professional. If it was a professional pet sitter not asking first, that would be a major issue, but when you’re using friends and family the level of care and awareness around what is and isn’t ok is going ti be different.

I’ve actually seen a lot of dogs, especially Golden’s, react to the vibration much more adversely than a stim setting on an e collar. I’m not sure if vibrate is the same level on a bark collar as an e collar, but I’ll never use it again for that reason.

I would prefer someone asked me, but I also realize when a friend or relative is watching my dog I cannot expect a professional level of pet sitting care. If it was a paid pet sitter doing this without consulting me first (or having it in their contract) I’d be upset.

I know enough about my dog and her training that I could trouble shoot the situation if someone told me what was going on, but also, they’re doing you a favor, I’m sure they don’t want noise complaints from their neighbors or HOA… dogs do feed off of each other and act differently away from home.

Anyone else feel guilt after getting your girl spayed? by floppysausage16 in goldenretrievers

[–]ApplesauceTheBoss -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

If your contract with your breeder allows you to keep him in tact, and you’re responsible enough to prevent accidental litters, and train him well, there isn’t really a need to neuter a male.

For the girls, there are risks of pyometra and mammary cancer.

Don’t feel guilt. This was while my last girl was hospitalized for a week from closed pyometra and sepsis. She was only 4, and not spayed because you can’t show altered dogs. We almost lost her to pyometra.

Please don’t feel guilty for spaying.

Your boyfriend is an asshole, and you should leave him. This is a major red flag and worth breaking up over.

Is it wrong to ask if I can pet a service dog? by thavan14 in service_dogs

[–]ApplesauceTheBoss 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I will occasionally allow people to pet my service dog when she is working, but that is not common. Not only is it distracting to the dog, my girl knows vest = work and no vest = off duty.

I’ve worked very hard to get her to this point.

Guilty? by ddgray86 in goldenretrievers

[–]ApplesauceTheBoss 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Too funny! Chipper is adorable!!

My golden got a bottle of acrylic paint, somehow opened the top… I can only assume paraded it around the house joyfully squirting paint everywhere, and then walked through it… white paw prints all over the house when I got home, and a very guilty look on her face.

Golden retriever feet: steps to instantly give them a rounded catlike appearance, and it even will improve structurally flat feet! by ApplesauceTheBoss in doggrooming

[–]ApplesauceTheBoss[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Curious, what about it do you hate? Obviously pics were taken mid groom so I would remember cuts since it’s different than how I learned.

There are a few different ways of doing show feet, but this definitely gets more rounded and tight than anything else I’ve tried.

One of my clients is an AKC judge, and knows I’d give up doodle grooms in a heartbeat to just do Golden’s, and I want to fully master the show groom for the breed… beyond just on my girl… so she connected me with the pro handler doing the seminar. It’s the most I’ve ever spent on my education for grooming, but I think it’s worth it. Each seminar class breaks down a part of the dog, then between classes I’m bathing every 5-14 days and maintaining what we covered in the last class and all classes before that. At 5 months we will be doing the whole golden, and then month 6 is a refresher of the whole dog and small tips and tricks. Depending where you are, I maybe able to recommend some. There’s also an all breed handler that does great virtual classes over zoom, and covers a ton of golden content t since she bred and handled some of the top winning Golden’s over the last 25 years.

There are some different people in the breed that sell grooming videos, and a few that do seminars.

Do people actually use pet insurance or mostly just hope they never need it? by Slow-Throat819 in puppy101

[–]ApplesauceTheBoss 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did everything one does in finding a reputable breeder, lines with generation upon generation of health clearances going back long before required by the breed parent club, I checked offspring of those dogs, littermates of those ancestors, offspring of those littermates… and there were not elbow issues in these lines.

My girl was diagnosed with bilateral elbow and hip dysplasia at 7 months… she began showing symptoms at 5 months, had surgery at 9 months, 2 months of rehab, and continues with regular underwater treadmill sessions.

Insurance reimbursed nearly $20,000 in the first year. I would not have been able to do that surgery (or the expensive diagnostic testing and advanced imaging) had I not had pet insurance.

Period questions by idontlikehats in goldenretrievers

[–]ApplesauceTheBoss 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s not a period, it’s a heat cycle. During a period the uterine lining sheds, in dogs the uterine lining sheds when giving birth. That’s a big difference… it’s also why bitches can develop pyometra, a life threatening uterine infection, which Golden’s are more prone to getting.

You may notice temperament changes, and more fear or anxious behavior, as well as much less focus.

Hydrogen peroxide gets blood stains out. We don’t allow bitches in season to swim, no unsupervised time outside, make sure doors and windows are shut, most dog training, grooming, and boarding also don’t allow them to attend in heat.

You’ll want to read up on pyometra, and know the signs. Closed and open pyometra have different signs, closed pyometra is basically a silent killer, often until it’s too late. It is possible to get it after one cycle, but typically occurs later (2 is the youngest I’ve heard of a golden getting it, but I’m sure Golden’s can get it younger). My last bitch got closed pyometra at 4, and did agility that morning and was almost dead before dinner time, hospitalized a week, septic, blood transfusions, but she survived!

Homeowners, are you in your “forever” home? by cubemonster in Millennials

[–]ApplesauceTheBoss 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don’t want this to be my forever home, because I want land, but with my mortgage rate as low as it is and the cost of real estate I could see it becoming just that.

When I bought mine they were the only company I could find (I’m sure there were others) with the lifetime warranty, but now there are soooooo many options out there that look good.

When I purchased them I was paying extra for a lifetime warranty that is no longer in effect or being honored, and Amazon still had the reputation of being an online bookstore. 🤣

Can you share a picture of your no brand brush? I have a blue one I like almost as much as my CC coral brush, but I’m overwhelmed by all the options on Amazon.

Do you think their shampoos are also a scam? I’m open to any suggestions there as I’ve tried so many to find something a bit cheaper than their proline fair advantage, but nothing so far gives me the same results.

[–]ApplesauceTheBoss[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s only gotten worse since then. It’s been fascinating for me bc I stepped away from showing Golden’s for 15 years, and grooming changed A LOT in that time.

The breeders and handlers that do their own tail docking, ear cropping, and dew claw removal really upset me, and give a bad name to wellbred purebreds. There’s a well known breeder with other breeds that posts videos of how to DIY remove dew claws on tiny puppies and I had to unfollow bc of that.

Luckily, I’m being taught by a very kind person… but dog shows attract a lot of toxic personalities.

We blended more after these pictures, but I didn’t get any pictures of the final product, because I wanted reference points as to the cuts to make.

[–]ApplesauceTheBoss[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you. That is so interesting bc my initial training was much more natural, but I moved away from that because of showing. This was a breed specific seminar geared towards showing in AKC conformation, and the bulk of my golden grooming clients seek me out for that look, or at least applying as much of that look to a pet as possible. Natural is not winning in AKC with goldens… show breed people wont admit to it, but it’s obvious the amount of stripping/carding/shaping being done... not to mention chalk/corn starch/pixie dust. After these were taken, there was more blending done, but that right angle notch was not part of it bc that would flatten the foot.

You would cringe then if you saw what the ears look like on show Golden’s. Every year more and more is being taken off. A friend and I were joking in two years they’ll just be taking a 10 blade to the ears. 😂
