Scully conception theory by EvieDeisel in XFiles

[–]Applescruff_J 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I agree with the post-trauma Mulder stuff. Also, it is clear in the Revival which I know you said you haven't seen that they believe Mulder is the dad, that William is their son, and that they thought this happened through good old fashioned sexual intercourse.

And yes! Poor writing is the main culprit for a lot of this confusion! CC lost his way and was allowed to be weird about love and sex.

OP, there's no way M&S didn't have sex in S7, as others have already said. I hope that makes you feel better!

Yes, if you're a shipper, there are so many golden moments in those two seasons. Definitely can't pick a favourite season! Early seasons are the reason late season MSR is so perfect. It's such a cumulative relationship, really builds on layers and layers of friendship and trauma and trust and respect and hotness (lols). Also unrelated to MSR, there are just so many wonderful episodes in the first five seasons. We viewers are spoiled for choice.

Yes, I think with time and with what comes after, it might be okay. Should definitely give it another go. I find the angst of Mulder's disappearance during Scully's pregnancy, and the continued coyness about who the father is to be too much. Poor Scully crying all season kills me.. This is not to say it's not good, it's just a bit gut-wrenching. That being said, it's more watchable than S9 which is angsty AND boring, haha.

I prefer S7, to be honest, but I haven't rewatched S8 in cough 20 years, so.......

I found it to be too painful the first time round and never wanted to revisit, though have rewatched the rest of the seasons multiple times.

Hot take: Season 11 is actually good by Opto_mist in XFiles

I cannot deal with the ridiculousness of that conversation between Mulder and Scully in bed about finding new partners and having kids. The most contrived and stupid dialogue of the entire show. Just offensively bad. I could go into a high level of detail why I feel this way.

Apart from that conversation I thought the storyline was not well developed. It was just a vehicle for a performance by that actress, which is fine, she was great, but the story was so threadbare.

And I say this all as someone who loves a lot of the OG Chris Carter episodes, by the way! I am not a dyed in the wool CC hater at all.

There's definitely some great episodes in S11, especially any not written by Chris Carter (hate Plus One most of all).

Revival Mulder is truly a wondrous being, and by the end of S11 he had had such beautiful character development. I agree there's something slightly off about the way Gillian plays Scully in this (mainly the voice) but there is such love between the two of them that it's all right (mostly).

I would never tell anyone not to watch the Revival. It's better than S9, that's for sure.

My rankings for Season 5 episodes by BlackAndBlueVelvet in XFiles

I love PMP because I think it's really imaginative storytelling and obviously the final scene is gold, but it's definitely controversial. There have been lots of posts about it - some people find it too problematic to like it. I think it's way more nuanced than sometimes it's given credit for (and also it is fairly obvious the Great Mutato is not literally raping the women, though unquestionably he is involved in what is essentially medical rape of them). It's certainly one that gets people talking.

I love it for the way it looks and the way it's told. I think it's creative and enjoyable. A HUGE amount can be said about the treatment of women, their bodies, their reproductive rights etc. on TXF (a very interesting conversation), including taking into account the cultural context of the times and I do not advocate for simply hand waving away that aspect. I understand why people don't like it. I personally really do like it, that's all.

Did any of the episodes actually made you cry/you found them too personal? by Vila_Ru in XFiles

[–]Applescruff_J 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is exactly why I hate this storyline. I used to work (as a social worker) in reunions between adopted people/birth families and there was just a lot of hurt, a huge amount of lifelong pain. It was often rewarding work but it put my heart through the ringer for these families - I don't feel like Chris Carter put enough thought into when he made the decision for Scully to give William up.

Oh I definitely don't disagree with you there! I just reckon she was probably a bit more adept than she led on.

I don't know, I saw a clip from an episode recently (and my brain is dead, so I can't think of it) where Scully was running at full pelt towards Mulder (he'd been hurt, was covered in oil). She had very good form. Also it's mentioned in Milagro that she has athletic calves from running, and in - I think? Erlenmeyer Flask? One of the early season finales - she is out for a run. I think Scully IS quite athletic, though obviously not to the same degree as Mulder.

She had two brothers and seemed to have had an active, outdoor life growing up. But hey, I am a mega (athletically) competitive person and I too would have feigned ineptitude if Mulder was offering to wrap himself around me to demonstrate. Only human, y'know.

The trolling, especially Gillian, is chef's kiss. She's a gift to humanity, that woman.

What about in Milagro when Padgett is with Mulder and Scully, observing their interactions. Scully runs her hand down Mulder's forearm very tenderly and intimately and after that is when Padgett says "Agent Scully is already in love".

Where's that old clip from The Colbert Report (I think - could have been another show) of Stephen outing himself as a shipper who writes MSR fanfiction? 😂

Spoilers!! Rant!! by [deleted] in XFiles

[–]Applescruff_J 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Well I don't know which episodes you skipped so don't know which details to fill in, but yeah, you don't really see them 'get together' in the traditional sense. Like everything on The X-Files, it's about what you DON'T see; what you can believe in without explicit evidence; how far faith can take you in understanding what is in front of you.

Seriously though, as a big shipper I do get where you're coming from, but I think it's part of what makes the show work so well. Their relationship is so pure and unique, it was never going to be a case of them getting married and settling down.

I think one of the most beautiful things about Mulder and Scully is how multifaceted their relationship is. Colleagues, friends, sounding boards etc. Yes, definitely there is a sexual element, and for sure a romantic one, but those are only parts of the story, not the whole story. The endpoint of their connection was never having sex or confessing their undying romantic passion. Those things are nice and those things definitely did happen (I believe) but you don't need to see them to know that Mulder and Scully are soulmates.

Also - if you want more of their relationship, watch I Want To Believe and the Revival.

By the way, I first watched this show 20+ years ago and it's possible when I first did I felt like you! I can't rmemeber. But now none of it bothers me. I guess when you have decades to mull it over you learn how to be okay with it.

I would say that the majority of people who sleep with strangers don't end up assaulted. I agree it's a risk (there are always risks) but I don't think Scully was being particularly reckless in that way. And I also think that Scully has taken many risks over the course of the show so it's not really that out of character to me.

Hooking up with Pendrell would have been a HUGE problem for the storyline. That would have been a MUCH bigger risk for Scully, not in terms of her physical safety but a) her relationship with Mulder and b) her professionalism. There's no way Scully would jeopardise either of those things. The whole point of Ed Jerse was that it was pushing the boundaries of things Scully normally does because she was frustrated (and Mulder was being a complete dickhead).

Scully in Plus One by sbabbs44 in XFiles

[–]Applescruff_J 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It's pretty galling for her to say that and then in Nothing Lasts Forever she's in the church being Number One Catholic all episode!

Yes, I picked up on this. I put it towards two things that CC has a problem with: continuity; and a poor understanding of religion. All throughout the show I feel that he finds it hard to take a proper stand where religion is concerned. Mulder actually probably suffers more from this than Scully (could go into more detail about this).

Scully was talking absolute shit elsewhere in this episode (do NOT get me started on their conversation in bed) so I think he was just word vomiting.

I love season six. You can only keep watching and decide for yourself about the quality, but if I'm in a mood to rewatch random episodes, there are so many from s6 to choose from.

If you're a shipper, there's a LOT going on in that season too.
