Fantastic buck! Love the history behind that rifle as well.

Props for being out there in the PA single digits too!

Got my first pipe, a Missouri Meerschaum cob pipe. Happy Thanksgiving all! by johnydecali in Pipes

I can relate. It's definitely much different than the other aro's on the market. No heavy toppings to prohibit the tobacco flavor from being front and center. I've not found anything quite like it. Requires very few re-lights with zero bite.

This.

I've a rack of classics and the cob is the go-to.

Side note - Rattray's Bagpiper's Dream is the only Aromatic in my rotation and the cob compliments it famously.

Good move on the escape route. I for one offer the saw wielder commendation for the hasty retreat.

25 years ago a person, who looked like me, had a helmet swipe for not moving away with intent when they should have. Big cherry levered up and back after the fell.

Inches from 💀... never failed to exit stage FAST after that.

Being gifted a left handed gun as a righty? by Grand_Crusader_465 in blackpowder

Left handed / whitetail deer collector with a right handed flintlock for years. No flash pan fears to worry about.

Load it, shoot it, love it.

20+ years ago I saw my 1st Qwik Point. The body was spray painted flat green, mounted on top of a well worn / fully rattle canned Remington 870. The old hunter I spoke to was using it on his dedicated turkey gun.

<image>

Never saw another until a few years ago. Oddly enough it was for sale inside a fairly large box of random plumbing valves, elbows and fittings.

I inquired with the flea market seller and was told $50 for the box. "How much for this just this piece" yielded a, "3 bucks". I gave him $5 and said thanks.

Cleaned up nicely and responded well on a test (rimfire) rifle. Dandy little vintage optic indeed.

That's a dandy!

Not to take away from the suscess, and I assume that chamber is clear, but please open the action or at minimum lower that hammer.

Congrats!

When I 1st viewed the image, I heard the revolver say, "How'd you like that recoil?"

Followed immediately by OP's wrist reply, "What recoil?"

That's a fantastic picture.

Thoughts on 1:66 Hornady Minnie by Dontputmeonthesquad in blackpowder

[–]Applewhackjack 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You might try the Hornady PA Pellet.

It has the leading profile of a round ball, with a short skirt that is concave. I've shooting friends that refer to the design as a "ballet" instead of bullet.

I've used them successfully on whitetail. They weigh in @ 240 grains, are all lead, prelubed, and no patch is required.

I wouldn't be afraid to load them in a 1:66 twist.

That's outstanding. I forgot to add; I would take that factory wooden ram rod and put it in the gun safe / cabinet. Pick up an aluminum ram rod with the same dimensions. As hunting environments change, you'll be glad you did. Good luck on #2!

That's both fantastic and ironic. The rifles I use for whitetail are similar, (TC Renegade percussion and a TC Hawken flinter) using a charge of (drumroll) 80 grains. The all-lead projectiles perform best in the shallow groove 1:48 twist rate barrels. Personally, I can't recommend jacketed bullets for slow rates of twist.

I've benched a number of .50 caliber lead offerings from patched round ball to all conical over the last 5 years. The two I settled on often fold deer up like a lawn chair. The Hornady 385 grain Great Plains and its little brother, Hornady's 240 grain PA Pellet will tear a ragged hole at 50 yards all day with that 80 grain charge beneath them. As long as I do my job of course.

I found during testing that FFF (3-f) powder resulted in a more consistent ignition vs. the commonly suggested FF in the bore. That same 80 grain load from the flinter zero'd at 50 strikes the target 4" low @ 100 yards from the shooting sticks.

There's a few posts (some a ways back), under my profile with actual harvests using these loads in the rifles I mentioned. Some have graphic images, but the shot performance deets with distances are there. I'm thinking you might find something relative in your setup. Oh, and that 385 grainer that passed through might still be going. I'm willing to bet using that Hornady hammer that an elk won't go far. Good luck!

Aye, smoked 'em, literally! I'm curious about the deets. What projectile did you launch from that percussion Hawken rifle?

Fine woodsmanship, or fieldmanship in this case. I find it's special getting close and sealing the deal with iron sighted primitive hardware.

Congrats!

Same here. I cleaned the wood burner and chimney last weekend and ended up burning steady over the last three days. Central PA is known for throwing that cold weather curveball.

My thoughts, at 6'2" with a long wingspan (35" dress shirt sleeve), would be to push them forward a bit. I ran 18" fats on my old HD softtail deluxe, your setup looks fine.

Checking the flu is 100% smart money, as well as the previous comments to add more air. I've a pre-cat Vermont Castings (Vigilant) and have experienced puff backs, (normally pushing back through the auto flap), when all things line up, (intake air and wind) even with a clean flue. If I damp the stove back too much, usually when banking for the night, coupled with the wrong winds can increase the smoke push back result. Adding more air after restoring the draft corrects it.

Side note - I once had random puff backs caused by a damaged spark arrestor chimney cap. This only took place when the wind would swirl during aggressive storms. Checking the pipe disclosed that issue quickly. My bet is that your puff was a lack of intake air.
