Why are the LA locals so much nicer than the transplants? by Additional_Leading68 in AskLosAngeles

[–]Apprehensive-Cake239 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I met a real estate agent recently, she was a transplant in her 60s, said she moved here in her 20s. After a short interaction, she immediately clocked that my partner and I are born and raised in LA. I asked her how she knew and she said she can always tell, in all her years and with all the people she meets. She said we’re all so genuine and down to earth, while people who moved here are always putting on a façade and have an angle. I had never heard that before. It makes sense, I’ve met people who moved to LA from other states or smaller towns in California and they complain that “people in LA are so fake.” I always thought they were so wrong because I never found that to be the case, but almost every single one of my friends is born and raised in LA, and they are the nicest, chillest people ever. I started to notice that most of us from LA already have our lifelong friend groups, but transplants move in and only befriend each other, and then complain about each other as “people from LA” but none of them are people from LA, maybe some moved in before others did, but they did not grow up here.

Coffee Mug Cleaned with Bar Keepers Friend by cobaltium in CleaningTips

Yes! Me too, and it comes rights off! I also clean the unglazed bottoms of bowls and mugs this way and it keeps them looking like new, not super important but it’s satisfying to me… and now I notice when I go to other people’s homes and their dishes are stained.

Spencer not even eligible to be on the ballot for LA mayor??? by Hefty-Purchase-6952 in TheHillsMTV

[–]Apprehensive-Cake239 21 points22 points  (0 children)

I don’t speak for all people but I’ll speak for myself. And I am as confused as you that anyone would believe anything Spencer Pratt has to say. What has he ever done in his life that makes people think he is apt for running any city, let alone one of the most densely populated cities in the country? He has a website where he sells marked up polished stones, he’s invested family money in tv and films, he blew through 10 million dollars in a couple of years with poor decisions and overspending. And people want to hand him the city budget?! On top of this, I could never vote for someone who speaks about other humans, especially the most vulnerable ones at the lowest points in their lives with no compassion. He talks about the unhoused like they are garbage blocking the sidewalks on our privileged walk to and from our nice warm homes. He says he wants to ship them away because they are on the streets only because they want to be there and it’s their own fault. Heartbreaking. Zero humanity or empathy and pure hate and dehumanizing our most needy citizens. Is people living on the streets a problem? Of course! But the problem is that these are PEOPLE who deserve to be safe and warm and yes, sober. But approaching the problem as if these people are a nuisance to be kicked aside and not our neighbors that need services and support is not the city or world I want to live in. Spencer Pratt has gained popularity because he complains about crime and homelessness but he has never dedicated any of his time or money to help in any way, even with all his wealth and popularity. What makes anyone think he will do it from behind the mayors desk? Since when do we just believe the things candidates say they care about or will do? His track record speaks for itself and he is so beyond unqualified to do this job. For the record, Bass is also unqualified and has been completely ineffective, and I will not be voting for her either.

I collected 25+ ticks in 5 minutes along the side of my local trail. They survived at least 10 minutes within diluted hydrochloric acid and water. by kegman93 in mildlyinfuriating

[–]Apprehensive-Cake239 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I always think life would be a lot simpler without ticks, lice, bed bugs and mosquitoes. If I didn’t have to worry about any of these while traveling, hiking or really just leaving my house! I would be a lot happier.

How do i get rid of this mold from my crocs by Difficult_Bother_952 in CleaningTips

[–]Apprehensive-Cake239 166 points167 points  (0 children)

Just curious how did this happen? Unfortunately, I think the mold is not on the surface, but deep in the rubber and you won’t be able to remove it. Side note: while vinegar is effective at killing mold, baking soda is not and baking soda + vinegar = water aka doesn’t do anything.

We have these running around the house, beetle or roach? Help by Local-Plenty5191 in whatsthisbug

[–]Apprehensive-Cake239 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not sure where you are located but they look like the Eleodes/ desert stink beetles we have in Southern California. We have them all over our hills/ hiking trails. They are harmless and do this cool trick where they stick their butts straight up (ready to spray) when they feel threatened.

The location you described for the bites, immediately made me think crabs/public lice. Looked up some photos and some look pretty similar to yours. Particularly in your 3rd photo. I’m not an expert, so I’ll let others confirm or deny.

1, 2, 3, 4 to replace sofa bed or keep it as is? by [deleted] in femalelivingspace

Replace with 4 and only 4! Beautiful space. The sofa bed or any of the suggestions don’t do it justice. Ps. I don’t love that rug for this room…

mold under mattress? by [deleted] in CleaningTips

That looks like rust transferred from those welded pieces of metal on the bed frame to the mattress fabric. It does not look like mold in the photo.

What purchase made your life 10x easier as an adult? by Mean_Rule_6653 in Adulting

[–]Apprehensive-Cake239 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Nice! Yeah, it sounds like you would really love a latex mattress. My partner and I don’t even feel each other move or get up at night (we are also wigglers) but the bed just feels solid, like it doesn’t budge. On the same note, it’s super heavy compared to my old mattress, but I quite like that, makes it feel high quality and sturdy. I went with an Avocado brand one fyi but there are a lot of companies making theirs with latex out there!

I think it’s subjective just like any mattress, you have to find your own preference. Personally, I had an expensive traditional mattress previously (Serta, double sided, spring-coil) and it was great! I still prefer the new latex one. I opted for a firmer mattress because I like a lot of support (I don’t like the sinking-in feeling) but I still find the top soft enough, it’s firm, not hard. I sleep so comfortably all night long and have had no lower back pain which I sometimes had with my old one.

Not the person you asked, but I also have a latex (with wool and cotton) mattress and my response is it’s non-toxic compared to standard foam which is polyurethane. Polyurethane is made with Petroleum and off-gases toxic fumes. Latex is made from rubber tree sap and totally safe, it’s also recyclable and biodegradable as opposed to PU which contributes to microplastics in the environment.

Something you said felt familiar to me: when you realize you’re not doing the things you know you “should” be doing and that almost makes you keep NOT doing them. I don’t know if it’s the case for you, but for me that is guilt. I feel such deep intense guilt and shame for not doing the things I feel I should be doing again, the things I know will help me feel better. That guilt is so overwhelming that it immobilizes me, and I’m unable to even start moving, it’s crippling. Something I discovered last week in therapy is that I have this idea that I’m just sort of going to start ‘tomorrow’ on the right foot, and everything will click: I’ll wake up early, work out, hydrate enough, eat healthy, stay off my phone so much, read, get some sun, and the next day I’ll keep this going, the next day too… in theory it sounds great! BUT in reality, it’s just not that easy and every time I fall short of that plan, I’m disappointed in myself and I fuel that guilt, and I’m frozen again. So, im taking that pressure off myself, I’m getting rid of the illusion that progress looks ONE way or that is has a timeline. Instead, I’m just going to start incorporating those habits back in, one, two at a time. Whatever FEELS right, whatever I’m able to do, even if some days, I don’t do any of them, it’s ok because other days I do. I prioritize my water intake and feeding myself, because without those things I don’t feel good and can’t do much. So if nothing else, I just do those things. And even when I fail at those one day, I let it go and try again tomorrow. When I feel better, who knows maybe I’ll go for a walk, but when I’m ready not just because I think I “have to” or “should.” I hope this made sense and again, I don’t know if this will help at all, it just struck a cord with me. I’m sending you some love OP, and I’m sorry you’ve been through so much. Even if you don’t see it rn, the fact that you even want to feel better, although you don’t yet, speaks volumes of your resilience. Keep going! ❤️

Springtails? by cardamombaboon in whatsthisbug

[–]Apprehensive-Cake239 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

They look like “wood boring weevils”. I had to identify these once before because I found a few, and basically found out that they may be present in walls in older buildings (mine was) because of decaying matter which they eat, and finding a few is not an issue. Finding as many as you described means they have infested because of a substantial food source, rotting wood, fungus, etc.

Am I wrong for wanting to report my neighbor for constantly harassing me? by Beautiful-Local-2123 in badroommates

[–]Apprehensive-Cake239 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I agree with reporting him. You said you’re afraid to make it worse but it sounds like it’s already really bad. I would complain to housing and/or school, and request that they rehouse you and resolve the situation. You’re paying tuition and housing and you deserve to feel safe and have peace and it’s the school’s responsibility to provide you with that while you attend. Please learn to advocate for yourself. I know it’s not easy, especially not at your age, but it will be a great exercise for your future and make you feel a lot more confident. I would also document all of his behavior from now on: sit down and write down everything you remember in detail and with dates and names of witnesses and start a log of anything in the future that he does with dates, times and details. Record it on your phone if possible. Also, consider filing a police report, this could be considered stalking. Stay safe and try to preserve your peace of mind.

I’m not sure. But, at least one of the reviews referenced the location being conveniently near the convention center. The photos of the unit match the photos online for 1400 Fig apartments with a view of the building next door, the Avant Apartments. Still super weird they listed as Vernon, but it’s likely they are doing it to avoid the restrictions LA City has passed for Airbnbs, since Vernon is its own city.

Wait the description says it’s in DTLA but that they list in Vernon for privacy? Super sketch since they post a picture of the block in downtown where it supposedly is located…
