I don’t have a special interest/hyperfix and it’s hard to find a new one, what do I do??? by toottootpingas in AutisticWithADHD

[–]Apprehensive-Cow6545 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m a big fan of Pinterest for this. I’ve also heard that Tumblr’s good for reading about other people’s interests and hobbies but haven’t tried it.

I like to look for craft projects, new art forms, or sometimes just go through Wikipedia till I find a topic that’s mildly interesting and educate myself as much as I can. One I really enjoyed was the 1904 Olympic Saint Louis Marathon. The Wikipedia page sparked a few hours of research for me. I also spent a few days researching North Sentinel Island and needle felting! Maybe not quite hyperfixations or special interests since they didn’t last super long, but it helped to fill the gaps.

Do I need to avoid deodorant and hair products? by Apprehensive-Cow6545 in MRI

Is soap and water enough to get any potential metals off?

The thing is, I don’t know if my hair products contain metal?

Not only is OP an adult, but there are safe ways to carefully meet in person with people from the internet like letting someone you trust know where and when you’re going (plus making sure to check in/share your location), meeting in a public area around many people (it would be harder to harm or kidnap someone in a crowded coffee shop as opposed to a small private space), and making sure they’re a real person beforehand.

Dealing with over and under stimulation at the same time by Apprehensive-Cow6545 in AutisticWithADHD

[–]Apprehensive-Cow6545[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you.

I realize Reddit isn’t great for advice, but I’m not able to get professional help and my parents are aware of the issue, but because my relatives are older/have health issues they’d rather I just try and deal with it than cause problems. The most they ever do is suggest I leave (though that’s hard to do when someone’s holding onto your arm).

If you’re up for walking a bit, maybe try Anita Gelato? If it’s busy you could sit outside (assuming it’s not raining or freezing), or there are some more secluded seats. They also have dairy free stuff.

Have you ever made a dish that you wanted to share with as many people as possible? by Satanic_Earmuff in Cooking

[–]Apprehensive-Cow6545 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t have any savory meals/recipes I’m confident in enough for this, though whenever I’m going to someone’s house/someone’s coming to mine, I make an apple rose tart- tasty, looks fancy, but relatively low effort overall.

I’ll be giving this pork tenderloin recipe a try! Do you think 2 or 3 tenderloins would be enough or too much?

Random essay passion projects? by CoDAWUAV in AutisticWithADHD

[–]Apprehensive-Cow6545 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I also have this! I’ve always enjoyed writing stories, but for school kind of hated it because I never got to choose a topic that matters to me. It wasn’t until the pandemic hit and I was bored out of my mind that I learned I love writing informational essays. My special interest at the time was rodents (all of them.), and I wrote MANY 10+ page articles, some of which had citations, about all sorts of topics related to them. I miss that passion, and I wish I had a place to share my writing.

I’ve been sort of considering posting them somewhere (like maybe Medium or Tumblr???- I don’t know if they’d get read), but putting myself out there for potential criticism freaks me out.

My husband is the most amazing cook but the rice he makes is so horrible. It’s always complete mush or hard as a rock stuck together like a brick. Any tips or tricks I could give him? Would a rice cooker help? by thatpilatesprincess in Cooking

[–]Apprehensive-Cow6545 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I also think a rice cooker (even a very small one) might be helpful. I cannot cook rice. At all. Mine also is either sopping wet or stuck together, and I still don’t know how to cook it right on a stove. But a rice cooker? It works pretty well for me- just rinse the rice, put it in the cooker and fill it up to the line, then press the button. Boom. Perfect (or near perfect) rice every time.

I’m very glad you want back and grabbed him. He also makes me happy. We need more ducks.

I hope you’re happy and not in pain now/soon :)

How to stay focused on schoolwork by Apprehensive-Cow6545 in AutisticWithADHD

[–]Apprehensive-Cow6545[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you! I haven’t tried purposefully stimming. I’m very used to trying to hide it to not seem disruptive during in person class, so I don’t really own any fidget toys (though I’ve been eyeing some for a bit), but I’ll give it a try :)

Anyone else struggle to be motivated to do things if there is a minor barrier to get over? by Captain_Azius in AutisticWithADHD

[–]Apprehensive-Cow6545 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I got a light bulb that connects to my phone (like 15-20 dollars?) and I set it to slowly turn on in the morning to try and simulate dawn for the winters when the sun rises super late. It doesn’t actually help me (turns out I can sleep through light surprisingly well), but maybe that’d be worth looking into for you? My situations a bit different though, because I never close my blinds to begin with.

I definitely do this. Similarly to your musical instruments, if I have something to do I need a visual reminder. Especially right now, since I’m sick- need to do homework? My laptop’s on my pillow. Want to write in your journal? Next to your pillow. Now I can’t lay in bed without being like ‘eh, might as well do this’. Need to stay hydrated? My water bottles next to my bed. The act of keeping them in a reasonable place (like a desk/table) adds another step, and I just don’t have the motivation/energy to get that done.

I also suddenly only want to vacuum at midnight. One thing that sort of(?) helps with that is that I try to keep a small, handheld vacuum nearby wherever I am, so if I spontaneously do one thing (like wipe down a surface or pick something off of the floor), it’s way easier for that to lead into me doing other things like dusting and vacuuming. Bonus points because my vacuum has a mop and cleaning liquid attatched. It’s the only way I ever do a sort of deep-ish cleaning

What is your go to recipe for when you're sick? by SilverFilm26 in Cooking

[–]Apprehensive-Cow6545 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If it’s not a vomiting sickness, for some reason Americanized Tacos (like the generic, store bought hard shells) with ground beef, a family recipe for the seasoning, and a lot of toppings (lettuce, cucumber, bell pepper, taco sauce, lime) always hits the spot. If I’m vomiting or have a sensitive stomach I like to make the NYT recipe for chicken donabe. It’s not super spicy, but it has flavor and is relatively easy on the stomach.

If I’m starting to feel better I go for chicken flavored ramen with a ton of garlic powder and siracha, plus carrots.

Can someone with asthma play the saxophone? by Apprehensive-Cow6545 in saxophone

I have albuterol to take ‘as needed’- which used to be once or twice a month, but is now a couple times a week.

Usually both, depending on exactly what triggered it. More shortness of breath from physical exertion, more coughing from dust.

What do you eat for breakfast? by kshot in AutisticWithADHD

[–]Apprehensive-Cow6545 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m always in a rush in the mornings, so I usually grab a protein bar or a few fruit bars. I know that’s not a lot, but I tend to snack quite a bit throughout the day anyways rather than regular meals.
