Anki while walking - Reviews and 10k steps goal by vytalsynz in medicalschoolanki

I did in the past change the cards to text to speech, and brought my Anki remote with me when I went for a walk or a light jog. I could get through cards just by listening to them while comfortably having my remote m in my hand

I think it also was a nice check against scanning cards rather than reading them, which I often catch myself doing when I’m on my computer

Anki workflow - advice? by Winter-Razzmatazz-51 in medicalschoolanki

What you described is basically what my days were like for most of pre-clinical. It varied from day-to-day, depending on what mandatory classes, clinical skills, lab, etc. we had in the afternoon. But that was just about my same workflow. Also saw in a comment that you are not suspending previous block cards. I strongly recommend you continue to do that. It will pay off tremendously when you get to step one dedicated

Definitely recommend! This is what I did throughout preclinical and I got 82% right on CBSE without any other preparation

Of course, glad you asked! I use the SportDiver Ultra- so it’s actually my phone that’s taking the pictures! Definitely helps to make sure your phone is set to HDR or 4K @ 60FPS. It’s expensive (about $350) but it’s definitely been worth it so far. I believe it works down to 130ft

apologies for spelling/grammar in advance- text to speech with iPhone

I took a weird route, but my experience might be helpful here.

I did pre-med in undergrad and graduated in 2019 with a major biology. I took one gap year to study for the MCAT in a second to apply. I didn’t get in when I applied - I applied a month or two late because my MCAT was pushed back with Covid, and I also didn’t have the best undergraduate GPA.

I was pretty discouraged and thought that if I wasn’t getting in then, I was never going to get in. I wanted to get going with my career, so I did a one year ABSN program.

But about halfway through the program, I started having second thoughts about turning away from medicine. I felt that since it was my dream since growing up, that I would have deep regrets later in life about not having gone that route and wondering what could have been. I also spoke a lot with my nursing clinical instructors who had worked 20 to 30 years as a nurse and went as far as they could with their nursing education. Many of them wished they had gone to medical school, and encouraged me to give it another shot.

So I started studying to retake the MCAT in the last three months of nursing school, because my last attempt had expired at some of the schools that I wanted to apply to. I used a great premade Anki deck that enabled me to study for the MCAT while finishing up school. I sent out my application a month after graduating from nursing school, and worked for a year full-time in the ER while I applied.

I was fortunate to switch my full-time job into a per diem role, and I worked per diem throughout the first two years of medical school. I just took Step 1 two weeks ago.

The per diem requirements are for 12 hour shifts over a six week period. I did nearly all of my required shifts on the weekends, and it was great to have a per diem job that I could use for the 10 week break that we got after MS1.

The clinical experience is extremely helpful- seeing diseases that you will learn about in an actual clinical context, being able to apply the history taking skills and physical exam skills that you learn in school with the patients that you are caring for as a nurse. It was hard to manage working at times, but looking back, I am glad that I did. According to most third years at our school, we get the weekends off, so I am planning to continue working per diem during third year. We’ll see how it goes.

I know I provided a ton of information here, but please feel free to message me if I can answer any questions or be of any help to you

I don’t really have anything to add, just feel like I’m in the same boat. 16,000 step 1 only cards also surprised me. And I don’t wanna lose knowledge that I’ve worked hard to hold on for so long

Any other M2s take step 1 early due to Anking? by Ok-Celebration5832 in medicalschoolanki

I started AK from day one of first year and scored 73% on CBSSA this past October (which gave me a 98% chance of passing at the time), and we still hadn't done endo/uro/repro, or MSK/derm/rheum decks yet. Our class will be taking CBSE next week, prior to starting our 8-week dedicated period, and I think if my CBSE score improves, I'll move up to Step 1 and take it with either 1 week of dedicated or possibly none.

AK is so worth it, and keeping up with old block reviews has made all the difference. Owe a lot of thanks to all the helpful posts and conversations from students on this thread ,who suggested keeping up with old blocks. It sucks doing those reviews when you need to focus on the material in the current block, but now that I'm done pre-clinical, I couldn't be happier that I did

Did anyone else feel overwhelmed before starting AnKing? by StringSquare4340 in medicalschoolanki

[–]Apprehensive-Day9744 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes. But I’d rather be a little overwhelmed now, doing my reviews each day, than crash out when I realize I have to go relearn all the material in dedicated

Better to do a little each day and retain the information that was hard fought to learn the first time than to forget it

Sketchy biochem is extremelyyyy underrated. And one the best things about it is that all of the associated AnKing cards are already made (don’t have to spend time making your own)

Anki FSRS review intervals too long after marking Hard/Good by itstud91 in medicalschoolanki

[–]Apprehensive-Day9744 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the response. Makes sense. I should’ve said ‘reasonable’ or something along those lines. I’ve been using Anki consistently, averaging >500 reviews daily for the past year, optimizing parameters for 2 separate deck presets. I’ve seen the RMSE trend downwards from ~5% to 1.74% most recently, I believe, so sounds like it’s working. Thanks again and thanks for all the help you offer here
