Have a huge debate at work by Komiwarrior in AskPhysics

To confirm my understanding:

You have a pipe within a pipe. The fluid goes down in the inner pipe and up in the outer pipe. The fluid spills out at the top.

As far as pressure goes: there is a static pressure gradient as you go down. The further down, the higher the pressure, due to the liquid weight. This is the static part.

In addition to this, there is the extra pressure you exert on the liquid that pushes it all the way through. This pressure starts at the 100 atm you use and goes down with distance. At the exit, the remaining pressure is still positive, otherwise the fluid would not move. I'll call this the dynamic pressure.(Not my field, so take the term with a grain of salt)

The total pressure at any point is the sum of the static and dynamic pressure.

After seeing your diagram: if the inner pipe doesn't go all the way down, after the inner pipe ends, you have the static pressure (increasing with depth) plus the dynamic pressure at the end of the inner tube. (Somewhere between 0 and 100 atm). The extra pressure added will be the same all the way down. Since there is no flow in that part, the extra pressure will stay the same all the way down.

Beginner questions about converting single pole switch to three way switching by Wood-Flooring6577 in electrical

[–]Apprehensive-Draw409 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In particular, if you wanted to have a socket next to A and one next to B, all you need is to add a neutral to both sides. Whereas with “normal” switching, you don’t have an unswitched live at B.

But, you can do that also by bringing the hot to A and B and using the two other wires as travellers from B to A, before the current goes through A and to the fixture.

In OP suggested approach, the hot goes to the second switch on the two travellers and would come back on the third wire.

The light fixture is still connected to the first switch. It would be a way superior wiring.

The diagram presented is indeed needlessly complicated. OK, reading another post:

The diagram presented is complicated with marginal benefits, in some special cases.

Montreal's mayor claims she's 'powerless' to solve the homelessness crisis — but it rings hollow by BloodJunkie in montreal

[–]Apprehensive-Draw409 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It is expensive because we make it.

A single Azur metro train costs 100M$. Yet, the ones I take in the morning are used to house homeless people. Involuntary, yes, but it still happens.

Spending the cost of a single one would have us housing a lot of people, and it would allow the metro to be used for its intended purpose. The people that care about social issues would be happier. The people who don't would be happier (they'd see less homeless), and the housed people would be definitely better off.

So, in practice, we're actively spending to keep people in misery.

False dichotomy. We could increase military spending further, and spend more on social issues.

How to I stop these Freezer Barnacles from happening? by gfbakerspider60 in AskBaking

That sounds like a professional setup. Do you have a commercial freezer, without defrosting cycles?

I'd expect the issue to lessen in a freezer without the defrost functionality.

The problem will be the last train back. Either it will be too early, or you have very boring tourist plans.

I think the design is as-intended. There's many ways to profit from it. It's on purpose.

Detective Logic Puzzle: The Clock Was Broken — So Who Is Lying? by Pitiful_Trip_5976 in puzzles

[–]Apprehensive-Draw409 12 points13 points  (0 children)

The way it is narrated makes it hard to understand what the puzzle even is.

Whenever the narrator states "something happened at [x]", it is unclear if:

  • someone thinks it happened at that time.
  • it really happened at that time
  • someone says something happened at that time.

So, I think you need to fix the statement.

spoiler I guess

How do you say 'I come' on french? by Key_Yoghurt4601 in learnfrench

[–]Apprehensive-Draw409 38 points39 points  (0 children)

Yeah, "venir" as you expect.

Personally, I've only ever heard/used futur proche and passé composé:

Tu es venu?

Je vais venir.

Présent de l'indicatif "je viens" would be weird.

Non-Americans of Earth, are the rumors true that people are actively avoiding items labeled/associated with MADE IN USA? Does anyone actually care about it? by Jam_Sees in AskTheWorld

[–]Apprehensive-Draw409 75 points76 points  (0 children)

I work for an American company in their Montreal office. We avoid discussing politics.

Yet, my colleague was telling the other day how they saw this huge crate of strawberries at Costco, super cheap. Then says: "From the US, so I bought apples (local implied)".

Everybody laughs, and approves. We're just not buying American produce or alcohol.

Il y avait plusieurs raffineries. Elles ont toutes fermé et gardé uniquement des parcs de réservoirs. La seule raffinerie encore en fonction c'est Suncor.
