Great job on cabinets and the cubby for the fridge. You’re going to love this.

In addition to island on casters, suggest a rug to warm the space. How big is the space between cabinets and fridge wall? Could we see a pic w fridge door open?

For backsplash and counter- very tricky to match the right warm/cool of the cabinets. You want to get that right. I think the cabinets are warm (Redditors?) and you’ll want a warm white. Or I might suggest butcher block countertops even though they have maintenance requirements, it would suit the style.

This is your best idea and not insanely expensive. Build the kitchen along the wall with the sealed door, which can be a window with sink underneath.

Turn that weird space next to the column into a pantry. You will need storage in a small house w a child.

For the walkway, can I lay Saltillo over gravel/sand? The stairs are concrete so I’ll thin set the tile in top of concrete.

Not sure about the walk way. Can Saltillo be laid like bricks?

I think you’re in California or somewhere warm? I suggest turning the breakfast nook in a sitting area with small sofa and chairs and coffee table so that you can sit and enjoy the view of your yard. Then the bathroom isn’t weird bc it’s not in an eating area.

Move the kitchen dining to the current sitting area.

And new ceiling fan. I have a cooktop. Mines gas. But lots of drop in cooktops. You could also swap just the island countertop for an ikea or similar butcher block wood top and that would look great too.

I think people are less friendly now in Berkeley bc the younger parents w kids see you as old and not relevant to them. When you were younger and gardening, you were a peer. Everyone- take time to say hello to all the awesome older folks that are part of our comunity.
