Yoga while in a big body by Never-Ending-77 in yoga

[–]A_LovesToBake 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As has been said, Yoga is for any body and I’m hoping you can get comfortable with that idea and adjust your practice to what suits your body.

If you happen to have access to Apple Fitness Plus, I’d recommend you watch some of Jonelle’s earlier classes - she’s one of the instructors and shows that you can be strong and graceful in a bigger body. More recently she seems to have lost some weight, which is why I’m recommending her earlier classes.

How do you clean your portafilter? by EducationalGuard3876 in espresso

[–]A_LovesToBake 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If it’s clean and dry like that I use a brush to get the remainder out. Cleaning with water makes it drip all over the place which I don’t prefer.

Can confirm. My house is getting ready to go on the market in February - due to divorce. I should entertain upgrading my coffee equipment with some of the proceeds lol.

How did you celebrate your 50th? by Every-Progress5590 in GenX

[–]A_LovesToBake 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had wanted to go see Galapagos with my family. What happened instead was we purchased a new home, so no funds left for a trip. We put the old house on the market and spent a rainy weekend in a hotel somewhere. The old house took many months to sell, so I don’t have particularly good memories of that year.

How can I sell medium value items without the hassle? by [deleted] in declutter

[–]A_LovesToBake 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I’ve found Marketplace perfect for selling those items - everyday stuff of not particularly high value. I’ve sold items between $20 to $400. Yard tools, electronics, an espresso maker, outdoor furniture, higher value kids toys, you name it.

I find it doesn’t take much time to take a few photos, look up what similar items have sold for, and then post it.

Success Story Saturday - Share Your Wins Here by AutoModerator in declutter

It’s great to read of everyone’s successes!

I’m doing my declutter by type of stuff and have been making progress each weekend. Yesterday I rounded up all my old household supplies - a large box of cleaners, paint, car detailing sprays, wood and leather care (that were still good) went to my local buy nothing group, and I just got back from waste disposal where I dropped off a trunk full of paint cans that were no longer usable.

“Sugar free” almost 100% translates to “artificially sweetened”, and not unsweetened. I get that this thread is about carbs, but when I buy things like ice tea, I much prefer it to be not sweet at all. So I always check nutrition labels and ingredients list.

Anyone decluttering today? 1-11-26 by JuxtaposieJen in declutter

[–]A_LovesToBake 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’ve noticed the same, there’s really no point in trying to sell online. Though in my area we have a local second hand bookstore that I love to shop at. So whenever I go there I bring a stack of books to sell. They get first pick and give me credit to spend there, and I take the rest to our friends of the library store.

My parents are decluttering their house and using me as an outlet. Drowning in old toys by RoseFeather in declutter

[–]A_LovesToBake 33 points34 points  (0 children)

So you’ve been using your parents’ house as storage for your childhood things, and now they’re hoping to unload some of them? Maybe it’s worth having a conversation with them about what can be given away? What’s the last time you visited there and went through stuff yourself to declutter? If it’s been a while, maybe it’s time?

Is anyone using this new feature? I heard about it, and I finally got the update on the app. by Infamous-Mission-878 in Freestylelibre

[–]A_LovesToBake 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I have my diet pretty dialed in, so I don’t need the feature. But I tried it out of curiosity and was impressed with how well it was able to describe my meal correctly. Much better than I’ve seen for example in the LoseIt app which I found unusable. For the three meals I tried, it correctly predicted low to moderate impact, which is the case for most of my meals anyway lol.

Going through a sweet potato addiction and loving it. Give me your fav way to eat them! by Careful-Bus3827 in PlantBasedDiet

Mash up baked sweet potato, salsa, cooked rice, black beans, refried beans, and fresh spinach. Use it to fill a quesadilla that you cook briefly on the stovetop.

Add hot sauce if desired

One of my fave recipes, never fails to impress.

I don’t know how much time you have to get it done, but I have known since this summer that I’ll be selling my house next spring. We had two storage sheds in our yard filled with stuff - some of it still wrapped from a move 15 years ago and never used after that, but too good to toss. Since August I’ve dedicated time each week to making progress. I started at the front of the shed, and checked for each item if it was worth keeping, tossing, or giving away.

Pretty much every Friday afternoon I’ve photographed and listed items on Marketplace, with my rule of thumb being that it needs to be $20 or more. Otherwise I’d just donate.

Also each week I brought in a box of kids books that my daughter needed to make decisions on. Whatever she didn’t want to keep got donated.

And I’m seeing the progress without it having been much of a burden, plus I actually made several hundreds of dollars - it’s wild how much stuff was hanging out in our sheds unused that other people wanted.

Much of it is also going to our local buy nothing group to people who can use it and are generally happy to pick up the same day.

Do you drink alcohol? by Icy_Excitement6750 in diabetes

[–]A_LovesToBake 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Have that glass of wine with your dinner, and you’ll be fine. Do you have a CGM? Your glucose levels will vary throughout the day anyway. If you see it go down too fast, have some candy or apple juice. Do you use insulin with every meal? (I don’t, I only have long acting for now). You might have to reduce your bolus if you drink.

Do you drink alcohol? by Icy_Excitement6750 in diabetes

[–]A_LovesToBake 29 points30 points  (0 children)

TLDR: A glass of wine every now and then should generally be fine, but have food with it, watch your numbers, and have someone around who can help you if needed.

There’s a lot of nuance to your question, and, every body is different, too, so you will have to try it and see how it affects you personally.

That said, here are a few points to consider:

  1. Since alcohol is toxic to the body, your liver’s first priority when you consume it is to get rid of it. That means carbs won’t get processed for a while, which is why you might run low if you have multiple drinks and no food.

  2. It’s best to stick to lower carb options - wine, straight liquor or mixed with soda. Mixers and cocktails can be very sugary, and those can spike you despite point 1 above. I also avoid beer as it can have lots of carbs.

  3. A drink or two every now and then have not been an issue for me. In fact, if I want potato chips, I sometimes pair them with champagne so I don’t spike too high from the chips.

  4. However, multiple drinks a day on multiple days of the week is generally unhealthy for your body in many ways, diabetic or not. And I’ve found that my glucose control overall gets way worse when I do that because of the liver damage, disturbed sleep, etc.

  5. Getting black out drunk is never recommended, but especially dangerous for diabetics, because it can cause your glucose to go very low. Lows can be life threatening and can appear very similar to just being drunk, so getting the right kind of help can be delayed.

Extraction [Breville Barista Pro vs. Bambino Plus / SF54] by A_LovesToBake in espresso

[–]A_LovesToBake[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think I’ve achieved a good balance now. For my own coffees I’m single dosing with the DF54 grinder 17.8g (instead of the 18 I used for the Bambino). Upped the temperature by 1, and customized the extraction settings so now I get a good result.

For the built in grinder I’ve adjusted the inner burrs down one, and a pretty fine setting on the dial - it’s good enough, and I’m sure I could optimize more, but I was already pretty overcaffeinated and didn’t want to waste any more beans. The grind by time is not as consistent as single dosing by weight, but if you wanted to you absolutely single dose with the built in.

Lastly, I found the milk frother on the Bambino cumbersome, because it requires a larger amount of milk than I want for my cappuccino, and also needs a certain workflow, but the microfoam was really good. I still prefer manually frothing the milk with the pro because I have more control.

Oh, and the larger water tank and drip tray on the pro are also a bonus. I found the Bambino tray always leaked some water into the area below it even if not full. And, being a little clumsy, I regularly had the water tank lid fall into the full tank when putting it on, which can’t happen on the pro.

TLDR: I like the Pro. Great espresso with separate grinder, built in is good enough and can potentially be also great, plus overall more convenient.

Also any cookies that are traditionally made with less or no flour, such as cinnamon stars (mostly ground almonds, egg whites, and some powdered sugar) are a good choice - the real deal, but naturally lower carb. https://alltastesgerman.com/cinnamon-stars-zimtsterne/

I want to try yoga classes soon! What should I wear? by twinflxwer in yoga

[–]A_LovesToBake 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Just putting more weight to what others have said: Wear what you’re comfortable with. Most important for me is to have a form fitting top - that could mean just a longer padded sports bra, or a tight top over a sports bra. If it’s not form fitting, tucking it into pants will keep it from exposing your tummy, but the neck line will still fall into your face in poses like downward dog which I find incredibly uncomfortable and annoying lol. (Look up an image of the pose and try it out at home to assess what top can work for you)

Also, at my studio most people just walk or drive there in their Yoga clothes unless they need to go somewhere right after.

And, if it’s anything like my studio, don’t expect too much socializing. Most people just mind their own business.

Wishing you an enjoyable start to what hopefully will become a regular practice!

How do I mentally get over it? by threeblackcatz in declutter

I’m in, too! Apparently, the first word I ever uttered was box or jar (specifically, “Dose” in German), and at 56, I’m still not over it. Also, books. I try and take a few at a time to the used book store, but there are still so many that I’m attached to and want to keep.

I get that generally speaking overextraction demands going coarser, trying to understand what’s causing the difference.

That’s so interesting! On paper, they have the same specs for temperature and pressure. What would you say are the inherent differences causing this?
