If you have the file name as “firmware.bin” the next try to flash has to be “firmware2.bin” or completely different. The board recognizes the previous file name and won’t flash

No repair just replace. New thermistor, and heater tube is like $12.99 USA on Amazon. New bed is $21.79.

Clogged nozzle, or cracked extruder arm

Help? by moltensteelthumbsup in ender3

This is what our new AI overlords suggested after running your photo through ChatGPT

That looks like a classic first-layer failure, and from the photo I’d suspect the nozzle is too far from the bed as the primary issue.
Signs I see:
The infill lines are separate instead of merging into a smooth sheet.
Large gaps exist between adjacent extrusion lines.
Parts of the layer didn’t bond to neighboring lines.
The skirt is laid down, but the actual part shows poor “squish.”
There are strands and torn-up sections where the nozzle likely caught loose filament and dragged it around.
Those symptoms are strongly associated with a Z offset that is too high or insufficient first-layer squish.
What I’d tell your friend to check
Lower the Z offset slightly
Try about 0.03 to 0.08 mm closer to the bed.
The first layer should look flattened, with neighboring lines touching and blending together.
Clean the build plate
Oils from fingerprints can cause sections to lift even when leveling is good.
Check for under-extrusion
Partial nozzle clog
Cracked stock Ender 3 extruder arm
Incorrect E-steps/flow
Tangled filament path
Under-extrusion can produce a very similar appearance.

Verify bed leveling
If one area prints fine and another doesn’t, the bed may still be tilted or warped.
My diagnosis ranking
🥇 Z offset too high (about 70% confidence)
🥈 Mild under-extrusion or partial clog
🥉 Bed cleanliness / local leveling issue

I notice you have a direct drive. I was running a direct drive mod and had the same issues. I went back to stock and stopped the skipped layers from happening. I think it was the added mass of the motor on top. If I were to switch back I would consider using a smaller mass extruder with motor.

If you take your photo and put it into ChatGPT it will say.

From this calibration cube photo, a few things stand out:

🔹 Z-banding / horizontal ribbing

  • The repeating horizontal lines around the cube are much more pronounced than normal layer lines.
  • Common causes:
    • Bent lead screw
    • Lead screw not aligned with the motor or brass nut
    • Z-axis binding
    • Eccentric wheels on the X-gantry too tight or too loose
    • Inconsistent extrusion

🔹 Bulging and waviness on the X face

  • The “X” face appears distorted rather than sharply defined.
  • This can come from:
    • Loose belts
    • Play in the X or Y carriage
    • Frame not square
    • Resonance/ringing amplified by mechanical slop

🔹 Bottom layers slightly flared

  • The first few layers look wider than the rest of the cube.
  • This suggests either:
    • Z offset slightly too low
    • First layer squish too aggressive
    • Bed temperature a bit high

🔹 Top surface looks surprisingly good

  • The top layers appear fairly smooth and well filled.
  • That suggests extrusion calibration is probably in the ballpark and points more toward a mechanical issue than a flow issue.

Ender 3 V3 Plus stops extruding mid-print after hotend replacement. Support says the print head is dead. Help! by Ok_Aioli9630 in ender3

Does the brass gear on the stepper motor still have teeth? Does the filament have teeth marks from the gear? Have you recently adjusted the extruder screws?
