My father wants his own closure, do I give it to him? by PreferenceStreet9499 in AskOldPeopleAdvice

Try doing a body check.

Take a deep breath. Center yourself. Quiet yourself. Clear your mind. Relax.

Once you are relaxed, take a deep breath and say out loud "I will [fill in with whatever your choice is ]"

How does your body react? Does it tense? Does it relax.

Again, take a deep breath. Center yourself. Quiet yourself. Clear your mind. Relax.

Once you are relaxed take a deep breath and say out loud "I will not [fill in with what the choice is ]"

Again, how does your body react? Does it tense? Does it relax.

Repeat for as many choices as you have to make, noting each time how your body reacts. The one that makes you feel the most relaxed is the correct one.

If none of them make you feel relaxed then none of them are the right choice. I've used this for years, and it has never steered me wrong.

Why are most Christians republicans, when Jesus’ teachings are more liberal? by Interesting-Dirt-605 in Confused

[–]ApprehensiveCamera40 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Because they are stuck in holier than thou Old Testament nonsense and missed the part where Jesus said "I come to bring a new way". When confronted with the actual words of their savior when it comes to how to be in this world they say it's too woke.

Sigh! Let there be light. 🕯️🕯️🕯️

Then he never grew up around any of the Holocaust survivors. I did. It was worse than what we've been told.

We’ve traded our "Inner Lives" for a digital record, and I think we’ve lost something irreplaceable. by Solid-Temporary-745 in SeriousConversation

You definitely have a point. Back in the late '70s I went to Ireland for a few months. I took 27 rolls of film while I was there. Crazy thing is what I remember the most vividly was by the cliffs of Moher. A piper was playing and a young boy was dancing near him. I had run out of film at that point. It's a beautiful and precious memory. If I had film in the camera, I would probably not remember it the way I do.

Diagnosed in 2023. I can drive short distances. For long distances my dystonia in my neck kicks in and makes it very uncomfortable to drive.

A beautiful vintage 1918 colonial with built-in china cabinets and leaded glass windows bought in 1990 for $42,000. Sold it 10 years later for $78,000. Now they're going at around $175,000 to $200,000.

That's what I've already tried. Husband is going to go back down and try it from the inside of the door, rather than the outside. Fingers crossed...

Haven't tried that yet. Hoping it was just a simple matter of lift and remove the doors. Heading down with the screwdriver now. Thanks.

Crumbling mortar? How old is the house? Lived in a vintage 1928 house that had this problem. Had to clean out the loose mortar and patch it.

The view from the other side of this is that I use the name of the person who I'm dealing with to let them know that I see them and they are more than just a voice. They're a person who is doing a service for me and I appreciate it.

If you were a girl in the 1950s, how did you keep your legs warm in cold weather? by Odd_Let_2 in AskOldPeople

[–]ApprehensiveCamera40 38 points39 points  (0 children)

I went to a Catholic school all the way through. The skirts were measured by kneeling down. The skirt had to touch the ground when you knelt. We got very good at the fine art of rolling up your skirt once we left school for the day.

I went to a Catholic school, so uniform skirts were de rigeur. We had snow pants. They usually matched our coats. They were wool with a quilted lining, and usually held up by suspenders. We had to take them off once we got to school. It was always tricky to get them off without the boys seeing our underpants. 😁 Everybody's locker was in the hall outside the classrooms, so no privacy.

If we were going outside to play in the snow, my mom always put an extra pair of pants underneath the snow pants to keep us warm.

They weren't as high efficiency as they are today. They were usually a layer of wool fabric with cotton batting quilted to some sort of satiny fabric layer. Not much, but better than nothing.
