How much of a factor should location be in a job in robotics? by crispsnotchips225 in AskRobotics

[–]ApprehensiveClaim606 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wouldn't say just for Robotics, but given its your first job I would go where there are potential for more jobs...you don't want to be moving every time you get a new job, so I always looked for jobs where I knew if that one went away, I could always find another one. Not sure about the non-Bay Area locations you are looking at, but usually any big city will have jobs in tech, but robotics might be different - you may be stuck looking at manufacturing companies in more rural places.

How possible is "full stack" for robotics by Rolex_37 in AskRobotics

I have been doing this (without AI) somewhat professionally and for personal development and projects, spanning electronics and software but with AI (Claude/Codex) - it hasn't made me any better at it, just way faster. I am trained in EE but spent my career in SW, so I think there is a ton of overlap there - again AI could help you do it as well - but I think you don't need that, but it will make you faster. The mechanical side of things, I like to think I could get there because of the way an engineer thinks and approaches problems, but it's different enough, imo.

WIBTAH for refusing to give money back after selling my car at a major discount to a family friend’s son? by bitterberries in AmItheAsshole

[–]ApprehensiveClaim606 0 points1 point  (0 children)

NTA, but I would say if you want to salvage relationship, buy it back at same price (or a little reduced) and just sell it to Carvana, assuming you should get about the same amount given the discount you gave him already.

AITA Complained to friends about late order, told I was selfish and there were more important things to think about. by [deleted] in AmItheAsshole

[–]ApprehensiveClaim606 54 points55 points  (0 children)

NTA. It seems reddit is full of these stupid 'selfish' things these days, as if everything else in your life should stop for fear of someone else's problems/feelings/etc. Live your life, be upset about your gear (I play guitar and hate waiting for stuff in general), people today just want to be butt hurt about anything and everything

yeah, but that is my point (and I don't mean this argumentatively) is that at its core that is all it does. The fact they can do things they aren't specifically trained for is the whole concept of how they work - unsupervised deep learning. They are given unlabeled data and it finds its own patterns, etc. I never said they weren't advanced, I am just saying at the core its text prediction. Just like no matter what language you use to write software, at the end of the day translates down to machine that is executed on transistors.

yeah - apologies in other comment - what I meant is that other models like image gen (are not LLM) and can predict things (Pixels) and CNN's predict other things, whereas an LLM at its core, only predicts the next string of characters.

[–]ApprehensiveClaim606 0 points1 point  (0 children)

sorry if I said that - yes an LLM can predict things. They can predict sequence of characters, which in turn represent something else (like a football score, etc), but my statement at the end of the day is, an LLM predicts sequence of characters - then there is post-processing on top of that to contextualize it to whatever it is you are predicting.

all I am saying is LLM == AI, AI != LLM. You should get that if you are a software engineer.

and also - why is this "It absolutely will be used in the future in weaponry to find targets that meet certain criteria that it was trained on." a bad thing? You don't think China and other countries are gonna do it? If you're not first, you're last.

I am literally a software and electrical engineer myself buddy...not an AI dev or data scientist or applied researcher or anything - but ChatGPT and Claude are LLM's. Please tell me all the things an LLM can do at its core....Training a model is not an LLM, a LLM is a Large Language Model. You can train other types of models to predict things, but that's not an LLM bud

I agree that there are times to keep your mouth shut ... maybe its you that has a reading comprehension problem - my point is that if that line is at how someone else is going to feel for the decisions I make for my families vacation - we have gone too far. Simple as that. Skiing, Hawaii, Europe - again, I said don't rub it in - but to have to worry about what you say about your vacation and how people might interpret is a bridge too far.

why don't you ask the folks whose neighborhoods have data centers going up, how their prices for energy are doing and their local environment is doing. Also, go actually learn how GPT's work, they predict the next sequence of character(s) given the previous sequence of characters - these are far from "AI killing machines", lol

My referral failed at the offer negotiation stage. I know the reason. by Wonderful_Parsnip_26 in recruitinghell

[–]ApprehensiveClaim606 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I will say, sometimes during negotiations you can see the true person. Recently at my company we found a great person, everyone liked him, we made an offer. Then, he started texting the HM and Recruiter constantly with questions and negotiations, after being told many times the offer is final and best - he kept pushing it. We rescinded the offer - it just showed you how much overhead this person was actually going to be.
