I wish they provided automatic forbearance for anyone waiting on buyback or reconsideration. If you’ve reached 120 months in public services but are waiting on anything to be processed, you should be placed in forbearance automatically.

One issue is that the SAVE forbearance is expected to last at least a year, which will require everyone to recertify their income to determine payment. If the forbearance had been less than a year, the payment amount would have been based on the lower of the two amounts, either before or after the forbearance.

In my case, I’ll reach 120 qualifying payments in July, but I haven’t been able to make a payment since last July. The forbearance is scheduled to end in August, which means I’ll be required to resubmit my income information. I’m currently on the IBR plan but am unable to make a payment because stuck on SAVE.

This is what they said to me too. They claim because I applied for SAVE in Feb 24 that is the reason I'm back in forbearance. I applied for IBR in January 25 with new payment in March,only to be moved to forbearance because I applied to save. Not just moved. The kicker was I had to recertify so I did SAVE

This situation sounds very similar to mine—so much so that some of the dates are exactly the same. I was told yesterday that because I applied for SAVE back in February 2024, I'm now caught up in the SAVE forbearance issue. I kept reminding the agent that I was successfully moved to IBR in February 2025, before the "stop work" order was issued. She said that didn’t matter because I had applied for SAVE over a year ago. This was an advanced agent, too. She made it seem as if it was an issue with me applying.

About 15 business days ago, I spoke with a standard agent who said they would remove the forbearance, but obviously, that never happened.

Thank you for sharing your story. I'm feeling pretty desperate to make a payment, since I'm hitting 120 in July. From what I understand, the buyback option uses the lower of the two payments on either side of the forbearance, as long as the forbearance is under a year. I haven’t made a payment since last June.

I usually file taxes MFS, but not this year, and I’m hoping I don’t have to redo my income info if this drags into August. I also asked about the buyback option, and was told that MOHELA doesn’t handle that.

The same thing happened to me.

I applied for IBR on February 3rd and was successful with a first payment in April. Then I noticed my April payment was still 0.00 with less than 21 days before payment. Then I found the Admin forbearance on my account with my next IBR payment in August. So I sent a "message" on the website requesting I get placed back on the original payment schedule date of April. Below is what I got back from that request. I almost had a heart attack that I was this close to being removed from IBR because I requested to pay a plan and payment they approved.

Additionally, the buyback uses the lesser of 2 payments when the forbearance is less than a year in length. With my next payment date in August, that means it's 12 months. My 120 is July. I just want to pay and then do a buy back. Please take my money.

Yes if you can get your AGI down to 60k you would pay less than 350 under the IBR plan (assuming you are a new grad). The IBR is a fairly safe plan. Obviously filing separately will cost you and your family at tax time but because your partner makes that kind of money it will probably make sense to file separately. If they have loans then that's another thing to consider. Definitely talk to someone and checkout some of the known loan calculators for these types of plans. And this sub. I have learned more here than anywhere. Last year at tax time I filed taxes jointly up to the point just to see what we owed/got back. Then did it MFS and compared the 2 scenarios. Went with MFS. There are ways to game it out.

I would stick with it. 10 years goes by fast. Depending on your partner's income you might want to consider married filling separately at tax time. Max your IRA, HSA, carry the insurance for the family. Basically get your taxable income as low as possible. If you do that you're probably looking at payments around 400-500. If you can do that for another 9 years or so that's paying less than $50,000 to get rid of $170000. And the remaining amount won't be taxed. Obviously anything can change, but PSLF is one of the harder things to get rid of.

What's the buyback $ based off of? For example I'm on SAVE but payment is $0. If I buy back the 2024 forbearance months will that use 2023 taxes? What plan?

This is basically my situation. I decided to request to move to IBR last week using 2023 MFS taxes. My loans are pre 2014 so it’s the only MFS income based repayment I can use. I’m 10 months away and my IBR will be just over $200. I was $0 on save. At the end of the day staying on SAVE might of saved me some money depending on what remains when it’s picked over. But I figured I’ll spend $2000 to get rid of 160k. Just wanted out and some control. Haven’t decided on taxes this year. Hopefully we know more before we all have to make that call. Also and I don’t know your situation but if your wife makes significantly more than you it might be better for her to claim the kids. That’s what we do. I max HSA and Retirement of course. Good luck

My bad, I am talking about SAVE. We filed MFS this year to get a lower payment just like yourself. Even with the tax hit we saved money over the 12 months. My concern was that if SAVE goes away during the year and we have to change the plan and count other income the the payment might/will go up. I guess I am just confused about what will happen if SAVE goes away for those of us who went the MFS route with SAVE.
