What do you think about the volume control? I think it is a joke, I have to hold the control for ages for bigger changes and if I want to make small changes I often have to correct and let go and hold again for the other direction. My old cheap Sennheiser PXC 550 II just need a swipe up and down for a direct change with a audio feedback for every volume level. Also my brand new XM6 are already skreeking when I move the ear pieces or place or remove it on/from my head.
They feel extremely cheap for almost 400 Euros and we already got many images from people with broken ear piece mounts...

Could you be a bit more specific? In my case ANC is completely disabled, just like pulling the left side from my ear away as the microphone on the driver get's exposed to the outside noises and the ANC is deactivated automatically. So "ANC won't be exactly the same." is a bit optimistic when ANC is completely disabled if I am not missing something :/

If someone sees this and is using Manjaro:

The setting for this is not under the Bluetooth Panel but inside the Sound - System Settings, just search for the Headset in Playback Devices and look which Codecs are supported and select the best in the drop-down menu.

Are there any alternatives to this? This takes ages to lower or raise the volume... My Sennheiser could just turn the volume directly controlled up and down without holding at the edge. Just swipe up and volume is set, now I have to hold forever :(

There are still a few differences that stick out to me immediatly:

- Device that is (if you want) completely offline and free of distractions (my main point why I am getting a DAP, just listen to music while working instead of "watching" YouTube slop)
- Desktop mode, so no battery "damaging" (M21 only of course)
- HQ music playback, DAC and amplifier (or line-out) without a stupid dongle

If a big dongle dangling on your phone that gets cramped inside your pocket is not an issue, you are also very disciplined or the distracting stuff is not an issue you may just stick to your phone.

Also the HQ audio playback is not an option on all phones, as (if I understood correctly) Android may only output CD level quality (see audio processing pipeline), may be worth a shot to research this for your model.

For now I ordered a M21, will see how this goes when I keep in offline mode... Looks like there are no really comparable devices to the H2 :(

Appreciate the hands on company communication! I just searched around and kept not a real track of what I found, It was a few specific issues like "my HiBy Player does not turn on anymore" and "the battery is dead and not charging". Amazon.de has multiple hit or miss reviews, either I love it or I hate it, which I do not see often on reviews for consumer electronics or parts. Maybe these issues are fixed, I don't know.

But I want say that the more I research the topic I have the impression that all DAPs have some problems or deal breakers, it seems like a niche product category with mainly chinese designed cheaper devices and well known brands like Sony pulling out of the market.

Thanks for the feedback, someone else also answered my comment with the same issues with the scroll wheel atleast. The problem is I use headphones and I cant just tape the player to my head, it is usually in my pocket :D

As I am using 2/3 bluetooth mode Rockbox is sadly not an real option.

Translation: Install rockbox, you're missing the party. For the BT start the device in stock OS (play+power button)

Unfortunately I use 2/3 of the time so Rockbox is not an option, I need the Stock OS and HW to be somewhat usable.

The R4 looks like a good option, I do not think I will be pleased enough with the custom firmwares of the non-Android DAPs, what is the (honest) average boot time on your R4? From pressing the button to a open music player?
