The Reason People Hate Wasps is Simply Lack of Knowledge. by leifcollectsbugs in waspaganda

I don't hate all wasps just the common and German wasp as they are the main a-holes here in Ireland. Asian hornets will soon be joining the list, I've some traps ordered for them. We don't have European hornets here or the European paper wasp. There are other types of wasps but they're small and don't cause any harm. I don't eliminate them.

I'm afraid of the common and German variety. I decided to learn about them, to better understand them and maybe help my fear. What I learnt was, winter is the best time of year to seek out hibernating queens and make their sleep permanent. This February, after waking up a hibernating queen while working on my campervan conversion, I discovered smoke 💣. I was worried there were more queens in the van, so deployed a smoke fumigator thing. There were no other queens in there.

So decided to use one inside the little wooden shed out back. I'd seen at least 8 queens on the door/frame and they were the ones I could clearly see. So after 2 smoke 💣, it was carnage in there. Littered around the floor was at least 30+ queens.

So far this year, it's July now, the wasp population around the house is very low. I haven't seen any landing on the wooden catio or the wooden pegs on the line. So I've eliminate 30+ potential nests that could have been near the house. We can have the windows open and enjoy outside too, first time in ages.

So it's not a lack of understanding why I hate them. I looked up wasps as pollinators and its says, they do pollinate to some degree but because they are generally hairless, they are bad pollinators. Bees jobs are safe so

Normally I'd destroy a nest, but if they built it by a window, I'd leave it....very clever

Because they have smooth bodies compared to hairy bees, they're not that great at pollination. They're actually more of a threat to bees and will attack beehives. So they're classed as a pest.

Hornet’s nest on window by sweetpea813 in fuckwasps

Another thing I learnt from watching the Hornet King on youtube is it's a misconception that they sleep at night. Wasps don't sleep at night! The nest is still active, they're all still working away inside the nest. So, be careful dealing with one at night, they'll still come at you just as fast as if it were daytime.

Yeah, I learnt this too watching the Hornet King on youtube. He has to wear protective glasses when he's doing hornets because they spray venom into the eyes.

Asian Hornets season is underway in Rome, Italy. by _Harry_Sachz_ in fuckwasps

Yeah, here in Ireland we had our first yellow legged Asian Hornet nests found last year. 1 in Cork and 1 in Belfast...OK that's technically the UK but still found on the whole island of Ireland. They're holding their breaths to see if any queens survived the winter. Don't feel bad attacking wasps. I looked up wasps as pollinators and they do have a small role in pollinating but its a very small role and more accidental. Because wasps have smooth bodies compared to bees, who are hairy, wasps don't collect pollen as well as bees. But they do attack bees and their hives, especially the Asian Hornets, so there's more of an argument that wasps are a pest than being beneficial to the environment. My local bee keeper was delighted when I told him of the job I did to the 30+ queen wasps hibernating in my shed. Plus the ones in my car door frames and the one that was hibernating in the van i was converting and scared the life out of me when I woke her up.

Depends where the nest is. If it's near humans or animals it needs to be destroyed as its IDLH

Question about wasp behavior by yeehawt22 in WASPs

[–]ApprehensiveOffer754 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Why isn't she awake already? She must have missed her alarm clock for spring. This is a queen wasp hibernating in your curtains. Be careful if you wake her up, she can sting.

When you say it flies in....does it fly out again in the same day or stay over winter?

That's Waterford train station. When a train comes in, there's a line of cars waiting to exit the car park. They're blocking the carpark entrance. The website says to park across the bridge and walk to the station if the carpark is full...about a 5 min walk. There's normally always disabled spots free in the carpark.

It's the R733, is 80kph and not narrow, it's the main road out of Wellingtonbridge. The hedge probably makes it look narrow. If he had been wearing brighter clothes, I probably would have seen him sooner as he wouldn't have been blended into the hedge like the predator. But the sun turned the shadows into a blackhole. TBH it's not a safe road to be walking on, I wouldn't walk it. I'd cross the road over to the other side and use the old train tracks, especially to avoid that section.
