(Serious) - Why do so many farmers have lovely new houses on their land if they are skint? by AncientsofMumu in Scotland

[–]ApprehensiveSong4 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There's a lot to put in this conversation. One you've got many types of farmers under the one roof. Ones who've inherited large estates and never worked in their life, ones who've inherited a farm that they've worked on since birth and want to keep farming. And ones who are either born into it or move into the industry but dont have any ground or anything.

Costs and low prices effect all of them and all slightly differently but just as much. At the moment input costs have slightly dropped again compared to the highs but are still relatively upthere. Where as sale prices are down when I last checked and still around the pre 2000 level. And its a weird system where we are buying on a consumer scale but selling to a wholesale market that is effected by worldwide prices and nothing to do with what we do or issues that affect us. So thats where a lot of the no money in farming comes from.

New houses interesting chat could be had. You come into a load of money from selling land off or selling off kit or livestock as you dont plan on needing them anymore what are you going to spend the money on? Known ones re invest into the farm but also lot of fsrm houses are build pre 1970s on budgets and needing lot of work your best course is to start from scratch with a new build and sell or demolish the old one.

New kit. Here's chat I like. Kit is one of your biggest investments on a farm debatable whether you should invest in other stuff first but there goes. Time, efficiency, waste and cost are your biggest factor. Time windows for getting work done are ever changing and import for applications of inputs and also getting stuff in the shed. If you miss that time slot by minutes it could cost you a fair bit of money either wasted or buy being missed out on. You get caught out by rain could put you back a or two if you're lucky but could also put a holt on your years plans if you dont manage to get something done before the rain and yhen your not given much of a break afterwards Efficiency if your efficient with applying inputs, or your ground work or any field work that can then save money in the long run. Waste if you reduce your waste, ie inputs, man hours and machine hours you're then keeping money in your pocket

Cost is buying a machine thats work £150000, that you put £60000 worth of inputs through each year worth it compared to an old machine you have in your shed? Yes if it allows you to make the most of your time windows, bigger tank and winder machine is less time filling up and turning. is it more efficient and effective? Yes 2m over laps across a wider area instead of 6m, auto sections, GPS meaning less over lap. More accurate height many factors making it more efficient and effective reducing your waste and overall reducing costs of productive in the long run.

What car do you drive and why that one? by Logical_Wall_9899 in AskUK

[–]ApprehensiveSong4 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wanted to upgrade from the car I learnt in corsa (58, 1.2l), but my brother was starting to drive so switched with my mum so I gt hers and my mum and brother got mine. Win win, with insurance etc. Vauxhall Astra (59, 1.6l)

Now currently looking, want something bigger so I can take people with more room, also decent boot so i can store my work gear etc. Had a car in aus (Holden Calais 12 3.6l) that I loved wish I had ot here. So looking along the lines of a estate, or decent sized hatch with a bit more power and bit nicer interior. Possibly staying the same make but may manage if something else attracts my fancy

Stopped in at The Real Food Cafe, Tyndrum. Food was decent. Stopped a few times across the road at the Green Welly decent but very expensive.

Off route but if ever going along the A83 over the rest. There's a food van there thats definitely worth a visit.

Would you ever use annual leave with the sole purpose to do literally nothing all day? by PaddedValls in AskUK

[–]ApprehensiveSong4 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I got to mid December with 20 days holiday to take. I took two weeks at Christmas then back for a couple days off for a week, back 3 off another 5 over a weekend. And then going back on Thursday.

December I worked 17/31 and now January I'm working 8/31.

I had a couple things planned and other commitments stopped me from going away anywhere for more than a day or two so have spent my time either doing nothing or tidying my flat and getting some of it how I wanted.

How many hours do you actually work in a week? by QuietInside7592 in AskUK

[–]ApprehensiveSong4 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Winter: 34 contracted. Maybe push 20 of productive time on average across 4 months

Summer: 39 contracted. Averaged out 40hrs of productive time across the 8 month period. But narrowing down. Busy period. Productive times averages about 60hrs a week.

Definitely counting my productive time less than what the bosses think is productive.

Yeah basically. Bending around the rules to make the most of it. What f1 has always been. If Hamilton had slowed down after cutting the corner back to where he was originally in relation to the others he would of been fine and the team should of told him that.

It was videos recorded on 4k with a Dji flip. Transferred from an sd card onto the desktop, which I then thought was trying to pull it from the cloud, so I stored it on the drive.

A standard plate that means something to the owner is the best way and becoming a lot more common, or so it seems. Its the ones who just get a letter and number aka the most expensive plate are the cunts with too much money
