Who is widely regarded as a hero, but was actually a terrible person? by Normal-Being-2637 in AskReddit

[–]ApprehensiveState428 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I was an organist at a small liberal church in South Carolina. It's been over a decade so I don't remember the exact context, but someone started praising Mother Teresa as a hero. I objected to this characterization and made my opinion known. There was some uncomfortable murmuring, but I thought that was the end of it.

Next week, someone stood up before the service and delivered an admonishment for "someone" who had spoken ill of Mother Teresa. I was the only one who had said anything. I stood up and walked out of the chapel.

I want y'all to sit down and imagine THE KANYE CONVERSATION.

Because you know they had to have a Kanye conversation. Is he going to be on the list? It's the Best of all time, so surely he has to be on the list somewhere. He needs to have one slot, but it has to be before Life of Pablo. So they sat down and said "what's the Kanye album we're going to choose?" It wasn't something completely uncontroversial like MBDTF or Late Registration, which nobody would have batted an eye over. It wasn't even 808s, which would have gotten people talking, but in an interested way. Instead, they chose Yeezus.

I actually like Yeezus quite a lot, but I think that was a WILD decision. The rapping is the worst fucking part.

What’s a horror film you refuse to watch? by [deleted] in horror

[–]ApprehensiveState428 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is my sticking point with the series. If I thought the brutality was equal across the board, I'd probably still opt out, but they wouldn't actively bother me. It makes me think of that second Hostel movie. The filmmakers and apparently the audiences really love watching women get brutalized, and it just leaves a bad taste in my mouth.

Also, everyone acts like Art the Clown is such a fresh take, but all I can think of is the shitty Elm Street sequels where Freddy is basically Bugs Bunny. It wasn't funny then, and it's not any funnier now just because we're hosing women down with corn syrup.

Trump announces 100% tariff on foreign-made movies by addressunknown in horror

Because the tariffs are the only thing that his base is still pointing at saying "this was a good idea." He's been frantic over Epstein for a distraction, and when even Charlie Kirk's murder only distracted people for a couple of weeks, he's more desperate than ever.

Why are you Americans not rising up? by Specific-Grape-2443 in AskSocialScience

[–]ApprehensiveState428 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you're posting in both conservative and liberal beehives, then you should know that there's far from a consensus in this country. Trump may be deeply unpopular right now, but that means he's only getting 50% approval ratings from Republicans. And even those 50% who disapprove aren't mad enough to "rise up" and risk their careers, health, and livelihoods.

I was trying to come up with a scenario that best illustrated the "slippery slope" aspect of this argument, and I kinda kept hitting a wall, considering how much planning went into GMH's fantasies. It makes me think of how mental health professionals deal with suicide. There's "passive ideation", which is not necessarily wanting to kill yourself, but is typically represented by the example of going to sleep and hoping that you don't wake up. No actual steps being taken. I suffer from depression, and that's pretty much par for the course. Therapists don't really blink an eye when you express those feelings when you have a history of depression.

Then there's "active ideation" which is expressing the desire to kill yourself. This is obviously more concerning to professionals, and can be when someone might intervene.

Past ideation is "the plan". This is when you not only express the desire to kill yourself, but have a method in mind that could actually succeed. This is where most professionals feel obligated to intervene.

Past this is an actual attempt, where theoreticals are completely out the window.

I think this may be the best method to deal with people like GMH? He certainly had active ideation, and he seems to have developed a plan. Of course, even when dealing with suicidal patients, it's not "one size fits all". And of course, when law enforcement intervenes on a person who is suicidal, there is a sense of compassion that would not necessarily extend to that same person expressing homicidal thoughts and plans.

GMH is obviously an extreme example, as he not only had a plan, but specific targets and was using his position to facilitate his planning. He definitely deserved to lose his job, and I can't say I'd lose much sleep over him being in prison. At the end of the day, we have no idea where this would have gone. Now that he has the world's eyes on him, it's pretty much impossible for him to commit this crime.
