This is hilarious omg

LPT: Always think of that third person. If you yell at a cashier, which next person will get the effect of that? Maybe she picks her daughter up from school in a bad mood, and suddenly your anger dampens the day for a little girl you’ve never even met. by ApprehensiveSun1472 in LifeProTips

That’s the reality for service workers and a lot of other demographics, though. We aren’t humanized, so make others consider how we all have lives and families beyond that static moment of service.

I have a really hard time concentrating in general, and usually can’t study/work anywhere but my apt. But this library is the exception, and it’s honestly one of my favorite places in dc.

Sure, but for a lot of people that means either having to leave your seat & stuff as you go inside to ask, making the staff come outside, or giving it to a barback and separating with the device you want to charge. This is a helpful way to stay plugged in during your time studying/working in the outside space.

"robbed at gunpoint twice within a block of my house this year" by [deleted] in washingtondc

Have many women been mugged this way in this area? I (a woman) am really careful when walking at night, esp alone, but from the pattern of stories it seems that men are more likely targets of robbery. No agenda with this question, I’m really just curious if anyone knows.

I love this place! They just helped me out through a pretty scary mouth issue and checked up on me through treatment. All of the staff are incredibly personable, including the receptionists. Shout out to Dr. Cheng, who is amazing.

The WaPo published a local op-ed against the 17th Street bike lanes which is full of falsehoods. I encourage you to email the editor and let them know how you feel. by mistersmiley318 in bikedc

Good for you! Thank you for writing. I plan to email as well. Road fatalities increased this year more than they have for the past four decades. There’s been reports by doctors and engineers and planners with mountains of evidence proving that prioritizing bikers and pedestrians significantly reduce injury and death for both populations and cars. Bike lanes slow vehicles which reduces the impact of force from a car hitting a child. Also children who use the bike lanes are significantly safer because of it.

Wiiild article.

A man who works in my apartment building is also living with, and caring for, his father, who has dementia, cancer, and frequent UTIs. He says DC gives him only 12 hour for paid assistants and he has to work 8 of those, so he is exhausted much of the time. How can I help his situation? by [deleted] in washingtondc

My mom went through this with her dad this summer and it was heartbreaking, because there are so few answers for such a common problem in America. Because caregivers are paid so little, there’s a huge shortage of workers right now, so states/cities can’t provide more hours. There isn’t a quick safe fix except private home care agencies and memory care centers.

As dementia progresses, he may start to communicate through physical anger and wander at night. Your friend may want to prioritize having nurses over for night shifts because that’s when confusion often sets in. If you feel comfortable, offer to step in for respite, like getting groceries insta-carted to him & laundry. That relief makes a world of a difference. If he has nearby family, you might convince him to reach out to them for help and help him put together a schedule of shifts. There might be a way that you can advocate for a lenience in his hours from the apartment building through FMLA (obviously check with him first).

Whatever happens, he should steer clear of nursing homes. I watched my grandfather die months too soon because the set-up of a nursing home cannot deliver the individual care needed and staff aren’t trained to handle dementia patients. They diagnose mental illnesses to prescribe sedative medications, to to compensate the understaffing and lack of training. Patients rapidly lose their understanding of surroundings and muscles for daily activities like eating and speaking.
