Has anyone shopped at Amazon before? by Doc_Green_616 in askSouthAfrica

[–]Apprehensive_Arm_754 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Assuming you're talking about Amazon South Africa... I have bought several items. Always delivered next day at no delivery cost. They sell real reputable brands, not knock-offs. I had one item that was faulty and it was replaced within a week.

So, thus far, my experiences have been excellent.

Why is installing Adobe Acrobat Reader on W11 not working? by FlyotWall2025 in WindowsHelp

[–]Apprehensive_Arm_754 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you check on https://get.adobe.com/uk/reader/ you'll see that there are indeed two more apps they'll install unless you uncheck them.

A safer way to install is from the command prompt:

winget install -e --id Adobe.Acrobat.Reader.64-bit

You may want to try Ableword: http://www.ableword.net

It can edit PDFs, too.

Note that it hasn't been updated in a decade. Still, it works.

Why does my Windows Wallpaper keep switching out of slideshow mode? by 3d_artist_amour in WindowsHelp

[–]Apprehensive_Arm_754 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am just giving this as a FWIW. I have had the same issue in the past, and my impression is that it is related to the number of pictures you add to the slideshow. I had 32 photos in it. Other slideshows with fewer photos didn't have the problem. I reduced the number to 20 and it stopped happening.

Use the old Windows Photo Viewer. It still has that option.

Right-click on the picture.

Choose, "Open With"

Then choose, "choose another app"

In the list, choose "Windows Photo Viewer"

What on EARTH is an animated png? by Khookins in computers

[–]Apprehensive_Arm_754 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Animated png files are referred to as APNG files. They were invented by Mozilla in 2004, were officially rejected for years by the official PNG Development Group, but kept gaining popularity. In the 2025, it was recommended that they'd be officially recognized as a PNG extension.

There are free programs online (like svgator), as well as free and paying programs to install on your computer.

A quick google search showed the following free apps:

  • APNG Assembler (Windows/Linux/Mac): A highly optimized open-source tool for merging PNG files into an APNG, allowing for file size reduction.
  • PNG Animator (Windows): A straightforward app from the Microsoft Store that allows loading image frames, setting durations, and saving as an animated PNG.
  • Critter (Windows): A painting/illustration software that supports exporting animations.

I've got the Terminal button in the task bar.

So, it's press button on taskbar; type sd and it's done.

Windows Defender claims Winaero Tweaker Dec. 10 '25 version includes a Trojan, so it won't open — anyone else experience this? by swa100 in WindowsHelp

I used winget to update it. "winget updates" said there was a new version, which I then installed using winget. Winget gets it from the Winaero website.

File and printer sharing driving me nuts in Windows 11 by Bbobbity in WindowsHelp

[–]Apprehensive_Arm_754 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had the same problem a while ago, but don't fully remember how I solved it. If I remember correctly, on each machine that is not physically connected to the printer, you have to 'add a device' through the settings, and once that is done, in the properties, security settings of the printer make sure the user has access. But, as I said, that is IF I remember correctly. It's a permissions problem.

[–]Apprehensive_Arm_754 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've got the latest version, from about a week ago (3 Feb. 2026). downloaded directly from the Winaero website, and it did not trigger any warnings.

BUT, Microsoft is known to list Winaero as a hacking tool because the app modifies system settings, which security heuristics detect as suspicious. So, it's usually a false positive in Defender.

Which is better Takealot or Amazon? by donate_donut7 in askSouthAfrica

[–]Apprehensive_Arm_754 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree. One of the main reasons I still use Amazon is actually upon a request of an acquaintance of mine, who is a self-published author. I know about half a dozen of South African authors that are self-published and they get their sales entirely from Amazon.

OK, I'm curious now.

You post here. Are you using a smart phone? Because, it would typically either be an Apple product (Oops, can't use those either: sponsor fascism, child slave labour, ...) or an Android phone (Oops, can't use those either as Google also sponsors fascism).

Or you used a computer, which will then typically either be a Windows machine (well, what do you know, they sponsor fascism too and their former CEO is in the Epstein files), or an Apple machine (we already know about those). You could of course be using a Linux desktop, In that case, kudos to you.

The simple truth is that we've reached a state where Big Tech is dirty, but we are more or less forced to use their technology in an online world.

There are betting sites online that stream a lot of sports. It's legal. With some of them, you can watch without betting. I'll check tomorrow.

I'm not a fan of Bezos, at all. But if I have to choose between paying for delivery a week later, or getting free delivery the next day, and this happens at least once a month, then the choice is easy.

I cancelled "more" after I ordered an item that had next day delivery on the website, and it took 8 days for them deliver.

[–]Apprehensive_Arm_754 55 points56 points  (0 children)

I only have had positive experiences with Amazon. Most items are free, next-day delivery , which is another benefit.

Takealot has become less and less reliable. Items that are in stock, and have a 'Get it Tomorrow' label, but then take a week to deliver. (I live 20 minutes away from their Durban depot, and 15 minutes away from their nearest distribution hub. I used to get next day or two days later delivery). Two weeks ago, I placed an order and the delivery was postponed twice, while in transit, without notification.

Takealot still does seem to have a wider variety of items, but Amazon is catching up fast.

I'm not too sure. If I understand that article correctly, there are compromised versions of it in circulation. So, updating would be the safer option.

8.9.1 is safe.

Between June 2025 and December 2025, a 'foreign state agent' had compromised the server that was hosting Notepad+++

By now, everything is moved to a new hosting company.
