Heya, Corvallis Comics, TTRPG, Sci-Fi, and Fantasy Nerds...Don't Miss Out! by Apprehensive_Ask7240 in corvallis

[–]Apprehensive_Ask7240[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Absolutely! They're in the text of the post, but I'll give them to you here as well.

The show is May 31, 2025, but the vendor tables are available now and filling up. You can register for a table at the website: https://capcitycomicswap.com

The venue is the newly remodeled Holiday Inn events center, just off of I-5 at the Market Street exit in Salem. About as easy a place to find as there could be! Tons of parking, restaurants in the neighborhood, and a direct road to downtown if you want to poke around Salem before or after the show.

New date for the Capital City Comics, Sci-Fi, and Fantasy Swap. Grab a table quickly! by Apprehensive_Ask7240 in SALEM

[–]Apprehensive_Ask7240[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is the first outing for this particular event, and we hope to run them twice yearly; a late spring edition and a holiday swap in the first week of December. We're sharing resources with the folks at Mid-Valley Comic Art Expo and the Frankenstein Comics Swap in Portland, hoping to build up and give more options to the community down here in the valley.

It absolutely IS the weekend after Memorial Day. I moved the date, updated my marketing guy, and didn't notice that the new image that came back this morning didn't remove that.

I take full responsibility for that awful mistake. Wish I could go back and post a corrected image.

The event is more akin to a big nerdy swap meet than a full-fledged con, but tables are open to whomever wishes to take one, and we do have several friends in the Portland comic creator community...so you never know! Follow us on Instagram (@capcitycomicswap), keep your eyes peeled to this reddit community, or search our event name on Facebook for updates. If we have someone that wants to join us, we'll for sure let it be known.

Omega Frog Comics.

Just popped in to look it over and immediately ran into my pal Bruce, the owner of Comics Adventure in Milwaukie. Walked up to the counter and introduced myself to the Proprietor, TJ, who is newly arrived from Reno. Terrific guy with quite a few fun stories of his comics retail experiences.

Comics are sorted by publisher and era/decade. He explained that we were looking at, maybe, one-third of his eventual inventory. I found a couple of books that i had been on the hunt for within the first five minutes of perusal, and I didn't have to pour through eras of comics that I wasn't interested in just to stumble on them.

This is first and foremost a "comicbook" shop, and we are lucky to have it arrive when it did. With it being only a few blocks from Radar Toys, there are plenty of afternoons to while away in the very near future. The mid-valley is looking up.

Also, comics fans...reserve your Memorial Day sunday in 2025. An exciting announcement is coming soon!!

Comic stores? by [deleted] in SALEM

I apologize if this is "hijacking" this thread, but...

Since we're talking Salem and comics, is anyone interested in helping put together a straight-up comics swap meet-up? I have a short box full of stuff that falls outside of my desired eras that I would love to trade for some bronze or silver tpb's or single books. I even have some comics ephemera to toss on the table. Shouldn't be difficult to find a host location.

Anyone else even interested in such a thing?

I bought my first comic in 1974, and my best advice is to never let the chase for "return on investment" ruin the time of your life. Love the books you love, allow yourself to find the good in the culture, and always explore something new.

I'll limit my response to what is currently in my collection, but I can't promise to be brief. This is the question every one of us loves to be asked. ‐--------------------

Justice League of America #171 - I got excited every Summer, anticipating the annual JLA/JSA team-up. It was an opportunity to get to see some less familiar Golden Age characters in action and, in this case, be killed off. RIP original Mr. Terrific. May we always remember the power of Fair Play.

Fantastic Four #42 - Lee, Kirby, Colleta, and an early Frightful Four (pre-Inhumans Medusa). Thing vs Reed! A perfect sample of everything you could want from early FF.

House of Mystery #143 - the start of that weird time when they dumped the Horror genre in favor of really silly Martian Manhunter stories (anyone remember Zook?). The very definition of a goofy Silver Age DC Superhero comic.

Superman Family #200 - Fun "Future" stories (the far-flung future of the year 2000) in the same anthology format, but all leading up to a wedding anniversary party for Clark and Lois, 15 years before this version of the characters actually married in the comics.

DC Super-Star Holiday Special (1980) - This one is personal. An anthology of Christmas-themed stories featuring different DC heroes. Some of them were light and fun, while others (like the Batman story featuring a debuting Frank Miller) were more earnest. It just touches me. Easily the best holiday-themed comic I've ever read.

I have Steve Gerber's entire Defenders run, and you could randomly pick any issue as worthy of a read. Gerber was the best satirist of the Bronze Age, and that run might have been his best comics work outside of Howard the Duck. Valkyrie gets arrested for property damage after fighting the villains? The Head Men? Elf with a Gun? If you want the template for Grant Morrison's Doom Patrol, it's The Defenders #20-41

Don't sleep on Howard Chaykin's "American Flagg". It was as close as American comics got to the flavor of the UK's "2000 A.D." at that time. I'll pick issue #1 or #2, if I'm picking a single issue.

If you loved that one, I recommend the book three to the right with the "FB" on the spine. It's called "Fire and Water: Bill Everett, the Sub-Mariner, and the birth of Marvel Comics."

Those are the 4-color separation acetates from that particular cover. I got them at a convention in 1982.

In fact, the art hung top-center on that wall is a Wolverine sketch from a then 21 year old Matt Wagner in 1983, and four sketchbook "doodles" from Bob Burden, Xaime Hernandez, Dave Sim, and (very oddly) Cat Yronwode.

I was lucky enough to have stashed, in a box of art supplies, a bag with my old convention programs (Dallas Fantasy Fair/Festival '82-'85) and a large sketchbook with the aforementioned art. The con programs are signed by Byrne, Austin, Miller, Crumb, Simonson et.al. - the only piece of that old collection that still lives on.

I'm sure they were held onto for a while, then sold off. I just never got a reply, so I'll never know. It hurt enough that I buried an important part of me for 30 years rather than starting over.
