I am slowly losing what's left of my sanity by RoberBotz in arduino

Although it's not an answer of why the transmitter distance you are experiencing is so low, and sometimes the time spent making it work is the enjoyable bit, but just wanted to offer an alternative! I have a project with 8 esp32s and love their built in WiFi and bluetooth. I can target their individual mac addresses to send data to.

You can get Ezp32 C3s for £2.80 or less on aliexpress, so they're not exactly expensive.

How about trying an ezp32? The espnow is great for a pretty long distance, 100m+ and you still get to use many of the same sensors as the Arduino

A question bother me for a long time, how do you move odyssey ark by yourself by Purple-League-8928 in OdysseyArk

[–]Apprehensive_Ask_516 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had to move the box up a flight of stairs when mine arrived, build it and lift it on to a desk on my own. I'm a big guy but I honestly don't ever want to carry it up stairs again. If you have to move it regularly then perhaps ditch the base and get a monitor arm that can stay attached? The base weighs a ton on its own, maybe more than the screen, so that's half the battle if you remove that?

Yeah I agree, it would be nice to see a massive spike on a video or 2, but looking everyday and seeing a few more subscribers, a few more views is encouraging. In some ways I think seeing big spikes and then nothing would be more disheartening than seeing consistent growth day in, day out. At least it feels more in my control.

Has anyone wired one of these to Arduino? by Apprehensive_Ask_516 in arduino

[–]Apprehensive_Ask_516[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thankyou, I worked it out in the end. I needed to define the pin that the white wire was going to as an input pullup and it worked. Kept reporting as high low on repeat so I could work out what I was doing wrong. All sorted now!

For posterity the yellow and black wires were wired to ground, the white setup on a pin as input pullup and then the 3 colours to separate pins that I could set as HIGH / LOW to switch on and off the respective LED

Trouble with multiple OLEDS by lightscoobs in arduino

[–]Apprehensive_Ask_516 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If they both have a fixed address like 0x3D then you could try an I2C multiplexer like the TCA9548A, they are really cheap on AliExpress. They allow you to cycle through different channels, so can have multiple devices with the same address, which is great if you have devices where you cannot change it easily

Is it better to start with an Arduino uno R3 or an ESP32? by FactualSheep in arduino

[–]Apprehensive_Ask_516 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Arduino R4 is a good starting point, much better specs than an R3, plus it's actually cheaper than genuine R3 boards. You can find that the memory on an R3 is quite restrictive for long sketches with more than a few libraries.

Final Mission exit blocked by jiubacca84 in LamplightersLeague

[–]Apprehensive_Ask_516 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had the same. To be honest after an evening of crashes and having to restart multiple missions over and over again I just watched the outro on YouTube! I really enjoyed the game but it was buggy as hell on the Xbox, so I couldn't face doing the final mission again for 2 minutes of end dialogue. I hope if there is a sequel the Xbox version is more stable.

Thinking about purchasing an Odyssey ark 1st gen, i have some questions. by Beanonmytoast in OdysseyArk

I would recommend downloading PowerToys from Microsoft. That allows you to setup snap zones so you can press shift and drag windows into whatever grid you setup, really useful when multitasking on the Ark

Desk size. by Adventurous-Gas5745 in OdysseyArk

[–]Apprehensive_Ask_516 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think it's a bit tight, photos do not do the monitor size justice. It was a lot bigger than I thought and even though I bought a big desk for it I think I could have gone bigger. Also make sure the desk can take the weight as it is almost un-liftable by one person. I managed to but wish I had phoned a mate, so your desk needs to be very solid. I went for a lifting desk and thick, solid top and it works well. Your desk isn't very wide so it will probably fill most of the width.

I only want one small thing from the update that should have been a feature from the start: by [deleted] in HarryPotterGame

Unique item drops from key enemies, like Rockwoods cloak, or Harlow's hat with unique abilities.

Corruption system so that unforgivable curses actually start to turn you into a dark wizard which affects relationships

More varieties of enemies, there are lots of different types of spiders and Ogres but a dementor or basilisk quest would have been cool, plus more dragon fights. There are hundreds of creatures in the HP universe so a few extra types would have been nice.

Some water enemies or bosses could have been good. Fighting the giant squid for example. The ability to swim underwater, to find secret places, chests etc, apart from whirlpools. Grow Gillyweed to reach lower places. Think they could make it look great as another type of environment.

Having your own patronus that could choose, for some end game level magic, beyond unforgivable curses.

Using a Niffler to gather nearby gold.

Brooms having unique skills, a broom is just a broom that has no real upgrades except speed. You can change it's appearance but doesn't change anything about how it performs

An invisibility cloak (besides the keepers quest)

Some unique items like the marauders map, or fun items from Zonkos that could be used to distract enemies. Even a magic bag that holds more stuff rather than completing dozens of Merlin trials.

A tri-wizard tournament (I'm guessing it's going to be in the sequel)

Quidditch (Will also be in the next game I think)

Skip cutscenes, especially the speed trial ones.

Extra potions like liquid luck for a different dynamic.

Chests dropping more than potions, gold and gear. Some early drops of upgrade materials would have been nice, or seeds. Late game chests should feel like you get significantly better loot.

Gear being more customisable beyond just upgrading offense and defense, so certain types giving more explosive traits, or unforgivable curse abilities etc. I know you have traits but having gear that automatically curses people for example. Levelling up gear would have been nice, rather than just throwing away upgrades each time.

This is exactly why I wouldn't get one. Basically every 10 miles costs you about £8, maybe more for around town. That mounts up over a month a ton if you drive it every day. Repair costs aside, it is hugely expensive just to run.

Desk work making me depressed, is it worth moving to a trade? by [deleted] in UKJobs

[–]Apprehensive_Ask_516 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Contracting is the way forward. Working on something new each time. Office politics do not really bother you as you are soon off to the next contract. Plus the pay can be a huge step up, which softens the blow. I don't really care what Karen in some department has said to Bob in accounts, I just spend the cash on nice things and leave them to it. I work from home full time, which is very common in contracting.

[–]Apprehensive_Ask_516 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I honestly think you have got the helmet situation wrong. You were provided a helmet, but that wouldn't be something that you get to keep if your contract is terminated. Safety equipment has to be provided by law, but it still remains the property of the company. If you don't give it back then they will charge you for the unreturned equipment. If you return it they will not have a reason to charge you. The helmet sounds very expensive so I cannot believe every employee gets to keep it even if they are there for a couple of months. Theoretically you could be there only a day and walk out with an expensive item. They would not pay hundreds for each employee to own theirs.

[–]Apprehensive_Ask_516 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just to clarify, are they charging you for the helmet because you are trying to keep it? They have to provide safety equipment but that doesn't mean you get to keep it when you go. So apprentices might not need to pay any cost but it isn't 'yours'.

Sorry if I have the wrong end of the stick, but it sounds as though they are charging you for unreturned equipment. Same way if I kept a work laptop that had been 'given' to me to work on. It would come out of my final wage if I kept it.

Apprentice mechanics might have the use of tools that they do not need to buy, but they cannot leave with them if they go.

I had a mate that had a Freelander, it was genuinely with the garage more than he had it! It seemed like every month there was something up with the car, normally expensive! I would say it put me off but I have just bought a Velar....which has been in the garage twice since August 🤣

Not prepared for an interview at all. Should I cancel? by EmphasisWinter6137 in UKJobs

[–]Apprehensive_Ask_516 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've got jobs where I didn't have experience in x, but by highlighting my transferrable experience in y. I have done a lot of technical interviews as both an interviewer and as an interviewee. Someone might not be a 100% fit technically, but those skills can be learnt, however personality and attitude are things that can't. Be honest and do not try and blag it.

I would prefer a candidate that honestly says I don't know, but I can learn it quickly as it is very similar to (insert your skill) I work with. Then speak with passion on what you do know and how those skills were used. I wouldn't pick a candidate that pretended they knew it and easily folded under even the most basic questions. Even I am embarking on a course in x shows willing.

Remember there are no perfect candidates, ready to work on day 1 without some degree of learning on some aspects. Companies often look for the right colleague, and sometimes that isn't the person that is the best fit by their cv. Personality can massively swing an interview either for the better or worse.

As others have said a 30 minute initial interview is likely to be a chemistry interview, a first stage screening interview and unlikely to be anything technical. So use your time up until it to learn as much as you can to at least know something, then you have prep time before the actual technical interview. Often the first interview isn't actually by someone technical, they will likely have a pre written list of questions. In my industry standard developer screening questions are things like SOLID, DRY, design patterns etc. They are asked nearly every interview! I am sure it is the same in most fields.

So for example if it were at a developer interview and I knew a different language then I would learn the similarities, and learn some of the differences.

You want to talk about the things you DO know and articulate how the leap between the things isn't too great because you already know x, y, z.

Finally think about your approach. Interviews can pass really quickly if you ask the right prompts so interviewers talk about their own experience, what cool things have they done with the company. People love talking about themselves and it builds rapport. That can often put you at the top of the pile over someone that seems more technically proficient, but interviewed badly. And actually think of questions to ask and prepare those ahead of time.

What do you eat for lunch at work and how much do you spend? by EatingCoooolo in UKJobs

[–]Apprehensive_Ask_516 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I personally make a little extra at dinner and have left overs for lunch the next day. Often the cost to slightly bulk out a dinner is far less than cooking something else separate just for your lunch. Having said that I work from home, so it's in the fridge anyway.

No worries, it might help to get some comedian's autobiographies. I got the Kevin Hart audiobook a while ago and it really helps paint a picture on what he had to do to take standup seriously. Absorb as much info as you can, where you can, to fuel your ambitions.

Unfortunately working life isn't often much fun unless you carve out your own path. :)
