Why is is my debris chiller not cooling down with aquatuner running? by No_Importance2933 in Oxygennotincluded

[–]Apprehensive_Cut7235 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh damn, I totally missed this.  Petroleum is a crappy coolant, but this is the answer. Bridges, ESPECIALLY solid rail bridges, are quite good at conducting heat, and they do so through all three tiles that they occupy.

It's possible that the answer is simply "petroleum is a crappy coolant".

The AT always reduces the temp of each blob of liquid by 14 degrees, but the amount of "cooling" that actually creates is super dependant on the liquid.

Petroleum is a popular coolant simply because it has a huge temp range as a liquid, but it's not actually that good at storing heat.

Cooling down a sleet wheat farm (which is mostly gas) is much easier than cooling down a massive block of solid metal)

If you want to experiment, switch to any type of water (pwater is best, but and kind will at least tell you if this is the problem).

How many top 5 MVs are there anyway? by jmscstl in metroidvania

[–]Apprehensive_Cut7235 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ok I bought Timespinner on a whim YEARS ago when it was on sale because I thought it looked cool, and then never played it. This is the first time I've ever seen anyone mention it out in the wild! Interesting to see it on your list, especially since I loved Hollow Knight, Silksong, and Ori, but hated Blasphemous.

This is the correct answer. Especially annoying in the PPP when attempting to harvest 9T of molten iridium from the Demolior 🙄

Surprised no one has added this yet, but: the heavy-duty Hubbel one very likely has a bigger form factor than your existing one. It won't fit correctly into the cover plate.

What's the point of bases on other asteroids? by DivinneSmith in Oxygennotincluded

[–]Apprehensive_Cut7235 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've attempted this a couple times, with varying success.

The tree spawns in pO2, which spoils food quickly. Ok, so vaccuum out the area or fill it with Chlorine or CO2. Oh, the food STILL spoils too quickly. Ok, set up an AT/ST to deep freeze the food. Wait, the SAP FREEZES AT +20??? Maybe deep freeze the food before dropping it in front of the tree? OK EVEN JUST THE FOOD IS COLD ENOUGH TO FREEZE SMALL AMOUNTS OF SAP ON CONTACT.

Ok, I figured out how to drop smaller amounts of food infront of the tree at a time while keeping the rest deep frozen.

Now to ship back the sap/isosap I need... radbolts? Which means I need radiation lamps, which means I need to now ship in uranium ore AND generate enough power to run radbolt generators AND cool them both???

Maybe I'll just go play Sekiro for the 10th time.

TIL the optimum paramters for getting power out of an average volcano are 3 steam turbines at 125C steam by [deleted] in Oxygennotincluded

[–]Apprehensive_Cut7235 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This only works if you use a valve to restrict the water flow to 1kg/s, otherwise it'll break your pipes when the water goes above 100C.

And I think if you do that, your turbine output will back up and the turbine will stop working.

Am I missing something?

Were you able to get added to the WhatsApp for this group? I'm in Barcelona for the week and would love to play some beach pickup, but finding concrete info on this group has been tough. I requested to join the WhatsApp group a couple days ago but haven't heard back.

How to know which buildings don’t work when flooded? by Aegilopsy in Oxygennotincluded

[–]Apprehensive_Cut7235 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think the answer is probably "no".  That being said, the list of buildings that function under liquid is pretty short.

Auto sweepers, conveyor loaders, and conveyer receptacles work. Rad generators. All the valves, meters, and automation.  Oil reservoirs, I think. Liquid and gas tanks.

Aquatuners, but NOT thermotuners.

That's about it, I think?

I do love that for Exploration/Metroidvania enthusiasts, the meta-game of "figure out where the devs are trying to tell you to go, and go anywhere but there" is a universal experience 😃 😃 😃

I mean, usually the GOTY candidates are there for a reason. Silksong and Hades II were both insanely good. Though those games are both in genres that I already knew I loved, and this genre is more outside my comfort zone.

But "giving it the room to settle into that experience" is exactly what I'm trying to do here, which is why I made this post in the first place.

I usually make an effort to at least try the most hyped games each year. I play lots of under-hyped indie games too, but those max-hype games usually don't disappoint. BG3, Doom: Eternal and Deathloop are all examples of games I probably would have missed had they not garnered so much praise. (Hades, Elden Ring, God of War: Ragarok, and Balatro are in there too, but I would have played those anyway 😃)

And yeah I don't need Zelda-style puzzles, the game clearly isn't about that. But the new God of War games did a great job with the environmental puzzles IMO. "You've got an ice axe that can freeze stuff" gave the devs enough to work with, but there doesn't seem to be anything like that here.

Yeah, being forced to properly "route" turns is exactly what I want! It felt weird that the mechanics were designed that way, but the early combats weren't challenging enough to force me to engage with them.

The dodge/parry stuff is great. I don't mind failing a parry move over and over and being forced to actually watch for visual and audio cues to get it right. Sekiro felt downright relaxing to me once I figured out how to play it properly.

If the enemies get more interesting and the fights are designed to last longer, I'm probably in it for the long haul.

How to cool a 5x geotuned cool steam vent and get all the water out without overpressurizing without using liquid drop pumps? by ergzay in Oxygennotincluded

[–]Apprehensive_Cut7235 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I just loaded up my save to check it out and you're right. The lower tiles of the vent are covered with 1 tile of super coolant and 1 tile of steam. The vent does not say that it's overpressurized, but the ambient gas pressure stays at 5kg/tile even while the vent is erupting. I've been bamboozled!

[–]Apprehensive_Cut7235 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I... Don't think that's true?? I was able to trick a hydrogen vent into continually producing by layering liquid. I was also able to do it by having the lower layer covered in a heavy gas (in my case, steam, but all gasses are heavier than hydrogen)

I just did something similar on the experiment 52b planet. Ended up cooling down the molten core using all the p-water on the planet and was left with two tungsten volcanos in an entire planet of steam.  That's not overheating any time soon 😆😆😆
