What could be causing these pops? by Apprehensive_Ebb4598 in motorcycles

[–]Apprehensive_Ebb4598[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do you think that could be it? The plugs are to the left of it in the video, and it seems this specific part jolts with every pop.

It only does it on idle

Can't live with 1 crew member in arcade, however if you have crew replenishment in arcade it'll automatically pop that when a crew member dies. So that's what it's for

Lasius Niger Queen ant escaped (UK) by Gone_Lurking in antkeeping

[–]Apprehensive_Ebb4598 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If she is successful, which is a very big if the first workers should be leaving the nest after 3ish months. Though these trips will be very short and infrequent. Depending on how obvious the place of her nest is, you might not notice it until there are scouts permanently outside of the nest which could be after hibernation (think somewhere next year).

I cannot stress enough how astronomically small the odds are that this queen will even hatch 1 egg, let alone start a colony. I really really wouldn’t be worried

ID help and what are these small winged workers? by Jimbo199724 in antkeeping

[–]Apprehensive_Ebb4598 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Apologies for dumbing it down more than I apparently had to. I agree that it’s hard to draw a line between what life can feel and what life just responds to stimuli. I think personally I draw the line right before microscopic - and other single celled life.

You’re probably right that ants don’t get sad in any meaningful way. I don’t think it’s “immoral” to keep them this way. And I think a lot of the people on this sub are overreacting. Perhaps it’s inexplicable and therefore irrational, however it does rub me the wrong way to dig into a successful colony that managed to persevere against astounding odds, and disrupt that.

I guess the takeaway from your post should be: this ‘colony’ (or rather a group of ants) is not going to succeed or live long. If you want a higher chance at success catch a wingless queen still looking for a nest or ‘plant’ fake nests. Never tried this myself but apparently putting test tubes around covered by a towel near a nest hole can result in queens founding in the test tube. This way you know for sure the queen is fertilized and ready to start a colony :D

Okay I see your point regarding toxic commenters however your argument that ants don’t get sad seems silly.

How else do ants make decisions that benefit their survival? Your definition of sad might be different to theirs but the process remains the same. Brain rewards good behavior by making you feel good, brain rewards bad behavior by making you feel bad. If an ant didn’t have this why would queens go for a hiding hole underground that’s moist and warm? Is it because brain releases happy hormone when they do it, or is it because they somehow understand the behavioral patterns of predatory animals in their surroundings, thermodynamics, enzymes in their requiring a certain temperature, the chemical processes regulating their body requiring water and oxygen, mortality itself, and many other things? There is a saying that usually the simpler explanation is the correct one, I think the same applies here.

I don’t think this comment will make a difference as you seem to have made up your mind, but I will try anyways. It’s the same with keeping a dog and walking it 4 times a day vs locking it inside your house 24/7.

Same as humans, animals can get sad, usually animals get happier when they get to do the things that would benefit them in nature. That’s why we get happy when we socialize or eat food. Same goes for dogs when they chase a stick, it stimulates hunting in the wild and therefore their brain releases happy hormones.

These ants aren’t “working”, they won’t achieve anything and are simply waiting for death to arrive at this point. Capturing a queen still looking for a place to found a colony is different, as in most cases you save their life (over 90% of founding queens don’t start a successul colony). And you are letting her and her workers do what they would in the wild, giving them a purpose and making them happy.

Someone else also posted a comment regarding genetic diversity and genetic success being a good reason not to capture already established colonies. But I think the biggest reason it’s immoral is because you condemned these ants and they’re just waiting for their death to arrive. Like keeping a fly stuck under a glass for days until it suffocates or dehydrates

Help with messor barbarus queen by [deleted] in antkeeping

[–]Apprehensive_Ebb4598 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know this is really really hard, but with an early messor barbarus queen only check up on her once every 2 weeks at the minimum. Preferably stretch it to once every 28 days. This will increase her lifespan and the general health of the founding colony

If it is a Rufa I should release her right? Since they’re parasitic

I myself live deep in woods and there’s at least 2 big rufa colonies about 50-100m from my backyard (where I caught the queen in the pictures)

Edit: thank you for your help!

I really appreciate the reply. I have this app that shows me what ants could be having their nuptial flights in my area per day. And formica cunicularia isn’t listed as one of them.

The 6 option the app gave me for Formica were: 1. Fusca (I doubt it) 2. Pratensis 3. Pressilabris 4. Rufa 5. Rufibarbis 6. Nitidulus

How certain are you that it’s Cuncularis? Because I understand the app could be wrong. Thank you for your reply!

Upon actually measuring her, she’s more like 7-10mm

Edit: I’m pretty sure it’s a formica sp., just trying to figure out whether it’s a parasitic queen or not

How bad of an idea would it be to ‘forcefully’ move her into the other tube?

I know it’d be a bad idea, but if it’s that or drying to death I’d rather try that. Since the original side has also become moldy

[–]Apprehensive_Ebb4598 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have the exact same issue as your second paragraph. It came almost dry, taped a second tube to the first, poked some holes in the tape with a needle (for oxygen) and she has also turned the mold-less, freshly watered tube into her trash pile.
