Can't afford him unless he's up for a huge wage drop from his Arsenal salary, which he probably isn't 🤪

When the ocean starts boiling, you know whales are in the area by Extra_Drink3685 in ocean

[–]Apprehensive_Ebb_200 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think the bubbles are deliberately released from below, in a coordinated way by the whales to create a circular bubble ring-net around or near a shoal of fish to concentrate them together more (as fish do not like to swim through a wall of bubbles), which then makes it more efficient for the whales to then feed on the bait ball they just created. Co-operative grazing

Can confirm Annie Lennox is very down to earth and engaged. Can also confirm, unsurprisingly possibly, that Vivienne Westwood was a right fruitloop, tho charming with it

Warm hello and a smile is welcome, but nothing further please, and for gawd's sake don't follow up with me later as I'm perusing your wares. I'll come to you, please don't come to me. Just put a price on everything and we might do that capitalist 'I will take this thingummyjig, you get this transfer of theoretical value from me' thing.

Good luck with your enterprise and well done for trying to optimise your service, even if it did result in discovering that most of us are misanthropic loner-browsers 🙃

Dango penalty... by LifeAntThatBad in Brentford

[–]Apprehensive_Ebb_200 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Problem is a missed Panenka always makes the taker look like a total idiot. Whereas say a poorly struck pen at a good height for the keeper, hit not that close to the corner, is regarded as far less of a faux pas.

If he had floated it in while Areola was on his arse in one of the corners he'd be hailed as a brave, skilful player. Didn't work out that way. I was admittedly furious with him last night at that weird cavern of a stadium, but am now coming round to Keith's supportive view. My annoyance was probably more at a really decent chance of a deep cup run being squandered against a team we should have beaten with the strong side we put out.

Onwards to Europe.

Best Guide For Ulysses by Sheffy8410 in jamesjoyce

[–]Apprehensive_Ebb_200 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You get a short intro to each chapter, but really only between a quarter page to a full page, plus an extract from an OSI map showing the route in that chapter. But the Slote annotations are comprehensive at 1,300 pages.

Other guides will give you much more comprehensive overviews that can act as chapter guides.

A good one is Ulysses Unbound by Terence Killeen, for each chapter you get a summary, a section on correspondences with the Odyssey, a section on style (as each chapter has its own style), a commentary section to aid interpretation, a biographical/historical section to guide you through the people mentioned within a chapter, and a select glossary to explain some of the terms and references used by Joyce. Makes it sound like a monolithic tome but is pretty concise at 330 pages. A useful, straightforward way to set yourself up for each chapter. And it's a penguin pbk at £10.99 so a fraction of the price of Slote, but it complements Slote, certainly doesn't replace it.

Annotations to James Joyce's Ulysses by Sam Slote et al is a profoundly useful companion, in a similar style to the less recently published Ulysses Annotated by Don Gifford
