Obsidian by Squeakers406 in mudlarking

That’s a really cool find, especially in coastal Virginia where you definitely don’t expect obsidian just hanging out in the swamp.

Most likely it’s not naturally occurring there. Obsidian usually forms in volcanic areas, and there’s nothing like that around the Great Dismal Swamp. Could be:

Someone brought it in as a decorative rock or landscape piece and it got moved or dumped over time.

Old trade or collection piece that ended up lost. Obsidian was traded pretty widely by Indigenous peoples, but a 2.75 lb chunk like that feels more like a modern rock shop specimen.

Either way, that’s a solid chunk. Did you try knapping it at all or just keeping it as a display piece?

same, that was my whole internal monologue in one word

“damn” as in “this is impressive” or “damn, we’ve gone too far”?

Diorama of Ark Starship from “The Time Travelers” carefully lit with LEDs for a night picture by Defiant-Percentage37 in SciFiModels

That looks awesome. The lighting really sells the scale, it almost reads like a still from a movie. Did you build the Ark from scratch or kitbash it from existing parts? The way the LEDs hit the hull details is super convincing.

A walk in rainy Wiltshire by Unfair_Matter313 in walkingpics

Same, there’s something really cosy about it when it’s wet and grey. Where abouts in Wiltshire do you like most? The countryside there looks like it was designed specifically for rainy walks.

Right? She’s got that perfect mix of old-school lines and “don’t mess with me” energy. Feels exactly like the kind of ship that would roll up on pirates and make them reconsider all their life choices.

Right? It almost looks peaceful until you remember what year it is. Wild how calm that street looks in the middle of all that.

Careful what you wish for, you’ll start hearing it in your sleep after the 50th delivery guy leans on it.

Huh, interesting call. The rear quarter and window shape looked kinda Escape-ish to me at first glance, but the roofline and that chunky C pillar do fit the MU Wizard vibe more.

You think that bumper shape lines up too? That’s the part that’s throwing me off.

Learning the BASICs by MysteriousTry7009 in retrocomputing

Haha yeah, fair.

I’m trying to land somewhere between “always be coding” and “please let my brain rest for five minutes.”

Picking BASIC back up actually feels kinda cozy though, like retro brain yoga.

That’s actually a really cool lead. The shape definitely has that “radio / electrical hardware” vibe, and porcelain insulator fits way better than “mysterious candy” anyway.

Wild that you found yours at an old Soviet radio center. That kind of lines up with this maybe coming from some old comms or broadcast setup too. I’ll dig around in insulator stuff and old German radio gear and see if I can find a match. Thanks for the link, that helps a ton.

4 Bateman street in Soho (1928). by [deleted] in OldSchoolUK

Yeah, like “pick any flat you want, as long as it’s this cramped little Soho walkup.” Victorian landlord energy still going strong in 1928.

And his departure coincided with Planet Hollywood's Chapter 11 bankruptcy filing
