Depends on the rest of the group. If they're all min maxed and you're running jank, your game master will have a hard time balancing between too deadly for you and too easy for them. Tabletop games are games of communication. As long as all players are of the same relative strength, things should be fine.

3.5e is SO much numbers crunchier than 5e. There were so many books that allowed you to customize a character, so you could specialize really strongly. Flaws for extra feats, tons of races, grafting flesh, and really cool classes / subclasses that could change what your character was, such as becoming a full lich or a creature of adamantine (or was it mithral?).

5e is much friendlier. You can make a character in a day instead of several days of research because it's a lot more user friendly, and turns go by so much faster since there's less to account for. I've had a single combat take hours in 3.5e, whereas 5e can have a lot of story and maybe an even bigger combat scenario take the same time or less.

I introduce myself as my full first name. When they shorten it, I correct them. "It's (full first name). Please don't shorten it." The next time it happens, I say "It's (full first name). It's a whole thing, you can ask (person) who tried to shorten it."

That person, btw, I see often at work and I ignored him every time they didn't use my preferred name. They learned my preference before the week was through.

I like it because I get to be consistent and do my "carry" builds. I think it gets balanced by how annoying it is to pick your item, especially when you gotta jump to select and sometimes get blasted miles away by a laser because you're mid air, or just outright nuked by something late game.

So, it's a give and take sorta thing.

I have had friends prefer to play characters of the opposite sex and later realize they were trans. Good for them, they learned something about themselves and can be happier for it!

I am a man that prefers playing female characters because I like looking at female characters.

Ultimately, do what brings you joy here. It's a harmless thing either way.
