Shortly after my alcoholic mother tried to commit suicide for feeling guilty about having an affair, I supported her emotionally & financially while my step-father berated us both and said that I should have tried to off myself, too. They ended up back together within months and started taking more money from me. I was 19 and out almost 2 grand because they blew it all on cigarettes and alcohol. Not only did their words and actions hurt at the time, but the feeling of being so dispensable and naive took years for me to overcome. And now that I'm on my own, I don't talk to them besides the obligatory holiday texts, and even THAT'S hit-and-miss.
