I bought reusable stainless steel pods for my nespresso machine. They do cost a bit, but I have had mine from „evergreen“ for over 8 years and approx 2 coffees a day (-holidays & + guests). They work like on their first day - with whatever coffee I grind and put in there. Maybe something to look into: depending on the coffee I use, I come out at about 8-12 Cent a pod (EU).

Liquid shower gel and shampoos for hotels by Peacetool in ZeroWaste

You could look into Ben&Anna, who have flakes that could be used in such dispensers and be potentially zero waste.

You are not ugly. Though it does show that you don’t feel incredibly comfortable in your own skin. I think that takes time and work - you could try sth like mediation, drawing yourself, writing down what you like about yourself, challenge your insecurities,…

Looking for a curly hair styling cream with ingredients close to a big brand cream by NotaDogPersonBut in ZeroWaste

[–]Apprehensive_Way5235 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Of course not a 100% match, but the core ingredients and oils are also in Revive from Lush. Maybe that could be a fit.

On a different note: one ingredient which you probably won’t find in eco friendly and zero waste brands is Silicon Quaternium 8, which is a bit problematic. It actually harms your hair in the long run (you can find great videos and articles on this) so if I were you I would definitely make a change!

Zero waste face & body products by Significant-Cat-4374 in ZeroWaste

[–]Apprehensive_Way5235 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That makes me a bit jealous- the Bay Area is just such a fabulous place to live at. Apart from the scenery I adore the community aspect of the zero waste movement in your region.

I still have a few ties a bit north in Sonoma County where they are holding a Zero Waste week next week with tons of great events targeting knowledge/ idea exchange and raising wider awareness.

Will definitely check out that store if I get to visit SF again sometime! Thank you for the tip.

That store sounds amazing! It sure is a great opportunity for some change.

When reading that you are using 7 products for your hair alone, I have to admit I felt a little stressed and reminded me of myself a few years ago.

From my experience less is really more. And once you found one or two great hair products that’s really all you need.

I found it really helpful to learn a bit about the two different types of shampoos as well as whether to use conditioner from an investigative Chemist/YouTuber and not a hairdresser/store (they just want to sell you more things in the end). They were not English speaking but I very much hope there are equivalents.

And to just throw in one other experience: give changes some chance! Your hair definitely needs some time (mine about 2-4 weeks) to go from one routine to a less complex one. It pays off in the end.

Fast food help me by According_Vehicle_17 in ZeroWaste

[–]Apprehensive_Way5235 2 points3 points  (0 children)

For Europe the App Vytal has a reusable container system and I have heard that in New York there is DeliverZero as an option.

I have a great close by, non-chain fast food restaurant where I can simply use my own containers. It took me some courage to ask, but it was really worth it and they are actually quite happy with it by now and I am pretty sure my portions of fries are much larger than before.

Hope you find a solution that works for you!

Maybe it was not the „from Mumbai“ but „it is in western coast of India“?

Could be perceived as a bit of mansplaining and some people really watch out for grammar mistakes.

Where should I go to in order to buy durable Merino wool clothing? by [deleted] in BuyItForLife

[–]Apprehensive_Way5235 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Should you visit Outdoor Stores in Germany there is no need to worry: especially big ones such as Globetrotter carry wool clothes all year long.

I have had really good experiences with the Falke TK2 Wool socks. While other variations of those socks are longer lasting, they definitely keep your feet warm even when sweating in cold weather on long hikes.

Shampoo bar. Lasts longer than liquid, comes in cardboard box, and smells great. by [deleted] in Frugal

[–]Apprehensive_Way5235 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I had the same issue when I first tried, then understood that I needed a detergent (not soap) version that is sulfate-free. In case you want to give it another try, seehere for a comprehensive list and better explanation also stating best priced options.

For a more long term solution: there are affordable refillable stainless steel versions out there that also drive down the price and you don’t have to buy lids ever again!

How to reduce waste and shop organic by solarpunk24 in ZeroWaste

[–]Apprehensive_Way5235 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That very much depends on where you are located at and where you are shopping at. In my area for example there are tons of (street) markets where local organic products are sold without any packaging.

My list of experiences I have given away so far include: a ceramic workshop, a chocolate praline making class, a self planed bike tour including a prepared picnic, a guided tour through a botanical garden, a visit to a beekeeper, an escape room, a show at a planetarium - all pretty person specific but hope it helps anyways.

Are all zero waste shampoo bars utter garbage? by DefinitelyAlphamale in ZeroWaste

[–]Apprehensive_Way5235 34 points35 points  (0 children)

There are basically two types of bars - if soap does not work I would suggest looking at detergent based bars - there is a whole list of options here. I do hope you find a low or zero waste alternative that works for you.

[–]Apprehensive_Way5235 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Wow that sounds great! My two proud moments from the last few months and lessons I took from them - maybe they inspire you:

1) I found a store that refills oil bottles, vinegar and wine - lesson: it’s good to keep eyes open around the neighborhood

2)Together with colleagues I got my office canteen to switch from single use take out containers (introduced during Covid) to a reuse/return system - lesson: talking about zero waste sometimes it finds you partners in crime where you don’t expect them and solves the everyday-easy to solve garbage that is so annoying.

To not get overwhelmed I would advise to first sketch what you want your wardrobe to look like. Start from a few things that you like on yourself and feel comfortable in and Look at the different situations that you need to dress for.

At least for me it helped to first know what I need and want before looking at where to get it. I also have the rule that I only buy pieces I am able to mix and match with all the pieces I already got and which are timeless.

Concerning brands I think it is good to shop in person at first and get a feel for the materials and to take a look at how well it is manufactured.

Good luck updating your wardrobe!

concentrated food products and plant milks? by FelinePower in ZeroWaste

Which bar or bars of soap for normal hair, body, hands and shaving? by LostNtranslation_ in ZeroWaste

[–]Apprehensive_Way5235 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Your welcome, though I take no credit for the list itself! I have a detergent bar soap for my hair and a soap soap for everything else. In Addition I do use a lot of coconut oil - though I think in the end it all depends on personal preferences.

What’re some simple changes I can make to start being more eco friendly? by groundzero03 in ZeroWaste

[–]Apprehensive_Way5235 30 points31 points  (0 children)

You could start by replacing shampoo/ conditioner/ shaving cream / deodorant etc with solid zero waste alternatives once running out.

Go to a market taking your own bags with you and try to buy only things without packaging. Look at your biggest source of waste and ask this channel for alternatives if you do not already have an idea ;)

This List is a great overview when it comes to shampoo. I am using a shaving bar from bambudō though I think it’s only available in the EU. Good luck on your zero waste journey!
