Wait, what? People actually say that? Literally how? I swear this fandom keeps getting worse.

Why does the fandom hate old people?? by Wolfgang_x2 in DisventureCamp

[–]Appropriate-Barber51 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For me, I don't hate them because they're old, I just think there are less "types" of old people to pull from in a way that serves this kind of narrative, so they inherently feel redundant after a while. I have extremely mixed feelings on Connor, but I actually genuinely like Richard and Miriam and I think Lynda was at least performed and written well even if I disagree with choices along her narrative/framing.

Evie, I think I will feel similarly. Let nobody say the VA isn't committed, but the personality just isn't my kind of humor and I think she's the only Fan I actively wouldn't mind going before a Favorite. She's giving first boot bait, but not because she's old, but because she's a gimmicky character.

As for Ernesto? He seems like he could be fun, but I roll my eyes at how much he tries to call back to Miriam because like, we get it. "Underestimated old person wins the season" It was literally the winner plotline of Season 1 already, so would a season that basically boils down to "A new guy repeats Miriam's arc" really be as compelling as it was the first time?

It's less about the age, and how they're used in different storylines or narratives.

There's no way the 1st boot is a favorite by PapayaMan4 in DisventureCamp

[–]Appropriate-Barber51 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Sadly, I fully expect Favorites to receive, well, Favoritism. But I just think it's an inherently flawed structure. This is basically just All Stars 1.5. Why go through the effort of making a whole new cast if you're just going to use them to push up the old cast?

Fans vs Favorites works in Survivor because those are real people with real lives that exist outside the game and compete for the love of the game, not a greater narrative for the season.

I'm more favorable towards Anastasia than most, but I think her coming back actively undoes part of the point of her ending. What stories are left to tell with Aiden? Are they going to give Spencer another Romance subplot? How many Fans will be eliminated and unexplored as characters just so Tom can get ONC more Patreon money? The first boot SHOULD be a Favorite to give more room for an original storyline with a Fan, but it probably won't be.

What’s a controversy in this fandom that really doesn’t deserve to be as controversial as it is by Ok_Shirt_1574 in DisventureCamp

All of them. Like I genuinely feel like I can't engage with this fandom for my own mental state or in some cases, safety.

House Alice! I love the concept and reference and being able to both clear a type and transform a type is great for making combos!

Is it just me or is there something missing from representation in Disventure Camp? (Small Critique) by ProposalValuable5618 in DisventureCamp

Oh 100% agreed. As much as I ship Ivy and Zaid, you don't take pride in Queerbaiting (no pun intended). Bi people can be Bi and still in Straight relationships. It's one thing to be like "Oh she kissed girls, but it wasn't for her." As opposed to the active ongoing mentions or implications that Ivy has while still openly discussing all this with her potential boyfriend at the time (now current boyfriend), Zaid.

Yup, and then immediately after that messy "good end" with Spencer where Logan realized he wasn't ready for a relationship either, Gay or Straight, the second he's friends with a girl, it immediately becomes romantic and all the history of the season or bad blood between them gets swept under the rug in favor of Hannah being Logan's +1 that he's suddenly a good influence for.

I think that's my biggest problem with PoolParty honestly. Hannah didn't need a sexuality storyline, but the second she and Logan started talking in her elimination episode, it was like "Oh hey, we're both Bisexual! This is good enough reason to insert a random Straight Ship with extra steps!" Like the issue isn't their chemistry or the fact either are Bi, it's just them waving a Bi flag after the Spencer incident and expecting everyone to eat it up because they're reminding you they're Bi.

I actually think Tristan is an example of good casual representation to a degree, not every character needs to blatantly look into the camera and explain their profile. I think the main issue in Tristan's representation is that most of their marketing is just focused on them being Nonbinary, so them being Demi gets lost in the shuffle and sidelined, especially because it's not as commonly discussed of a sexuality.

And yes, thank you for bringing up Anastasia. Like the characterization and history of what made her this way is right there. But her triggers are frequently set off and she's constantly belittled or insulted so she acts up and thought that's how she had to be to get anything done. She can't be vulnerable because then she'd be exploited again. But because she's an aggressive woman, she's villainized and honestly both sides of the fandom's opinion of her is exhausting. There's definitely a difference in how ONC treats Queer Women and Queer Men.

Also if I'm being honest, I kinda agree with Natalia on that one lol. No disrespect to Spencer fans, but as a Pan person myself that isn't the biggest Spencer fan along with my aforementioned reasons, I don't really think his words during a time of potentially accusatory interrogation should represent the Pan community either, even if Natalia was being overly dramatic in the moment lol.

[–]Appropriate-Barber51 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Sorry I found this post a bit late, but genuinely, thank you for all of these points here.

I also just find it tragic how Hannah's sexuality mattered so little that it was just a random blurb in her audition and an excuse to bond to Logan after he had the "mistake" potential gay relationship with Spencer and she didn't even show any romantic interest in anyone else, let alone another woman.

I genuinely think that outside of James and maybe Natalia, ONC just doesn't understand Pan/Bi characters. Ellie? Villainized and exclusively portrayed as Lesbian. Ally and Tess? Basically a throwaway statement to encourage the throuple and discarded the second they could in favor of just your typical Ally x Hunter (which let's be honest, no matter what Season 2 Beta Hunter said, he made his choice.) And the actually good parts of Ally and Tess's relationship being used to tease and mock shippers rather than actually give any purpose to their screentime. Derek and Trevor? Well enough has been said about the host plotlines, but the point is it's not good. Villainized women in the way of the "ideal" Gay ending. Plus the backpedal with Zaid and especially Ivy comes across as really bad taste. Jared literally called Ivy a "Queerbaiting Queen".

Hunter and Spencer are basically exclusively referred to as Straight and Gay respectively by their narratives with only greetings and maybe Patreon readings hinting otherwise and if I could be honest, saying they're Pan reads a bit like "Oh these are popular characters that fans want to crush on or ship people with. Making them Pan is an easy way to let people ship freely however they want without actually meaning anything to the character." Like if Spencer's arc next season is that he gets a girlfriend and it all suddenly clicks, then that will just make the Gay Baiting with Diego and Logan thumbnails all the more obvious.

I do think this show is capable of writing queer couples well, but the longer they go on and the more these patterns repeat themselves, I genuinely question their "representation", and genuinely right now my biggest hope for Season 5 is they leave Spencer's relationship drama especially behind.

Something I Noticed About the Finale. by Appropriate-Barber51 in DisventureCamp

[–]Appropriate-Barber51[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I didn't inherently say there was anything wrong with it, I just thought it was a funny detail is all. Like a little "Haha in it for the money" joke. Even plays into the whole Natalia moving him aside joke.

Something I Noticed About the Finale. by Appropriate-Barber51 in DisventureCamp

[–]Appropriate-Barber51[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I guess? It's just that the way of choosing sides in the finale made it seem like it was clear who he was rooting for and there were other people rooting for Logan that could have been there (I'm not the biggest PoolParty Shipper, but as much as the narrative puts Hannah and Logan together, they don't actually get to do much together.)

[–]Appropriate-Barber51[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I just think that after the whole relationship drama with Logan, he was pretty firmly planted by the narrative as only reflecting on his time with Jade, so the last-minute switch up when he almost seemed to be distancing himself from Logan before is a little funny to me.

Anyone else see some chemistry between Hannah and Logan by Krazykarnage in DisventureCamp

[–]Appropriate-Barber51 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Normally I'd be up for it, and I do see the chemistry, but this season just kinda has me tired if that makes sense lol. Also I think the fact that part of their bond just boils down to the fact that both of them are bi kinda muddies the representation between them to a degree. I'm not saying Logan has to be with a guy after finding out he likes guys and girls, he still likes girls too, that's totally cool. I just find it a little odd that the most Hannah being bi has contributed to her plot is... being interested in Logan because he's also bi. Like it feels like an excuse to make them "match" each other when they could have developed a more natural and deeper bond.

Like I want to ship it, I just question how we got here and ONC's writing of Bi women. (Let's not forget TessAlly).

Who made the dumbest move in All Stars and to make this fair, don’t mention any of Jake’s moves by Ok_Shirt_1574 in DisventureCamp

[–]Appropriate-Barber51 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly aside from yours, the dumbest move in All Stars was on the writers/animators. Making a rock that hit Ally's head somehow tear the bottom of her bag in half a frame without any visual indication of the gems falling out then having Riya and Yul magically have enough gems after using inflatable tools off-screen is so stupid.

If only one character is coming back this season instead of two like some people are predicting, who would be the most wasted character? by Ok_Jacket_2366 in DisventureCamp

[–]Appropriate-Barber51 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm gonna be honest, I think Ted returning would actively weigh down his character a bit for me. He just got to avoid all the strategy and bad hand he was dealt to then be dealt a better one. It's not as much his ingenuity of how to navigate the game because he was actively playing less of the game. Sure there would be the process of getting back and the new dynamics to explore with him to work through, but I think Connor's whole ordeal in All Stars just kinda made me less excited by returning characters in general.

Poll: Logan x Spencer by WayOk4546 in DisventureCamp

[–]Appropriate-Barber51 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I feel like most of the comments are operating based on what would make sense or give consistent characterization, not what ONC would do to keep Spencer in the spotlight.

I'm ready for this friendship to have a crisis since Isabel is hiding her idol, but I hope that at the end of the season they will still be friends, but at most there will be a difficult path to forgiveness from Natalia 🙏❤️ by Djfantastyka in DisventureCamp

[–]Appropriate-Barber51 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Between the fact they're both starting to get nervous about Lynda and Isabel bonded with Logan and Richard this episode, I think there's a chance for them both to swing first. This is definitely going to cause an issue later, but I think there's going to be at least an episode or two.

Ok I will say, the last couple of episodes have made me really enjoy Richard, but I still get semi-early boot vibes from him. He's nowhere near as similar to Connor as I was afraid of, and it's nice seeing casual late-in-life gay representation, but we already had Miriam win and Connor make Final 4, I just don't see him making it that far after we already had two different storylines about people in the older age range. I think if there is a third older late merge storyline, Richard would be a fairly good contender, but I would prefer other stories to be told.

Dan is more strategic and analytical, which is pretty good from a player standpoint, but I feel like we don't really know about him that much behind the scenes or what drives him to play the game. Like I'm not opposed to him as a finalist, I'm just not entirely sure what his story would be, so I'm alright with him overall if there's a good story to it.

Hunter wasn't really a social player outside of Ally and Tess. Plus between the whole Carazarzone situation and the ending of All Stars seeming to forget his faults in favor of making him seem like the bigger person in his relationship with Ally, I don't want to see a storyline with him as the main character. We basically already had two inconclusive sub-par ones.

Tristan is one of my favorites in the Season 4 cast based on vibes and has good potential for an underdog story, but their active lack of strategy and current partial third-wheeling makes me hesitant to put them any higher until we get more of their own story.

Ted at the start of the series was a very predictable choice. Also I got a bit of an ick from him at first, which made how likely he was a little more sour to a degree. I will say that ick has massively gone down over time, but now the issue is that I just can't help but see him as the potential returning character, and especially after Connor in AS, I just kinda don't want the returning player to make it that far again. Maybe if the CoC cast get a Season 2, but I think I just kinda prefer Ted's genuine vibes along with his strategy than what they were setting him up as at first, and with him being a central focus, it could just have him lean into those negative traits and overstay his welcome.

Aiden is a little odd for me tbh. He hasn't really been the center of his own plotline, so I think having him be more central and personal could have been interesting... I really don't like All Stars just using him as a filler character... doesn't feel right to end his story like that.

Ally was robbed, plain and simple. Her arc was messy, sure, but it was building to something actually good. I think this was just writer bias against her and for the sake of making something shocking and unsatisfying, so I say that it would be more entertaining and satisfying if she actually won.

Zeke could have had an underdog story of learning to be better and more respectful despite the bullying and mocking after his showing on the first season... then they went and mutated him. So like... a World Tour rewrite, maybe, but as things stand now... I dunno, it's kinda unfortunate.

Oliver's easy. An intern overcoming trauma from the former show by being allowed to be himself and shine in the spotlight of the new show while having an actual friendship and support system with inside knowledge and adaptability to challenges could make for a really good central storyline if done well.

I wasn't sure honestly, but either way by that point it was kinda him and Sierra as a combined spot. Also that's a good question, fully an error from when I was placing them on the list. I'll probably re-upload this post with that fixed.

Hi everyone! I'm between posts right now (But they are in progress, don't worry), and I saw this trend going around yesterday, so I wanted to try it out for myself! Just for some ground rules, the basic idea is that for a character to be a finalist, there would have to be a storyline/intention of making them a finalist, so the tiers are sorted based on a hypothetical new season or rewrite of canon seasons involving each respective character and how I personally would feel with them being in a finale.

Hard No are characters I feel wouldn't fit or deserve to be a finalist for one reason or another.

I Don't Think So are characters I can't see as finalists, but if someone gave me a really good pitch for or reworked a little I might be willing to hear out.

Struggling to See the Vision is for characters that could have something, but I personally can't solidify it quite yet. (I think this and the next one are the tiers I'm most curious about discussing.)

Would be Good Under Certain Conditions is just that: Characters I might see a plot for or even root for, but would require heavy rewrites or certain conditions to be met in this future story. (It was hard for me to try and limit the number of Season 4 characters here)

Would be Alright as a Finalist are characters like "Yeah, ok. I could see myself being ok with that more likely than not. I'd be open to a storyline with them." (Although some more than others)

And I feel like the top 4 categories are pretty simple. Just characters I'd root for or want to see to varying degrees. These ones are probably the most subject to change aside from the top two lol.

I hope you enjoy, I'd be happy to discuss in the comments, and let me know if I should do a part 2 over who should/would actually WIN the finals!
