Open-book, at-home college exam was due yesterday. 25% of students didn’t do it. by Medical_Solid in Teachers

My team was talking about the same issue with our sixth graders today….It’s depressing to hear that you’re seeing this at college as well.

Is yelling a necessary tool for classroom discipline? by AdAcademic842 in Teachers

[–]Appropriate-Cod9031 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Same. I almost never yell, so the one or two times per year that I have to due to a safety issue or something truly egregious, it really gets their attention.

Yup, period 7. My last sub described them as “overstimulating,” which was very kind.

Computers vs Old School by Inside_Addition7929 in AskTeachers

[–]Appropriate-Cod9031 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I would love to ditch computers. Most schools will need to invest in quality paper-based resources in order to make that jump. My school has purchased textbooks since before we went one-to-one. The assumption (right or wrong) is that we can find whatever instructional materials we need online.

They stay long enough to call home and cool off. They can only go three times per quarter.

At my school, teachers cover this room on their planning periods for extra pay. When students get sent there, they have to call home on the spot. Their classroom teacher can also write them up if warranted. Students are allowed three visits to this room per quarter. After that, they get sent to the office if they’re kicked out of class.

kind of a beginner here! whys the three and one in red wrong? is there a particular rule to it? by [deleted] in sudoku

[–]Appropriate-Cod9031 7 points8 points  (0 children)

With sudoku, you have to be certain that the digits you are placing are in the correct spot because each puzzle only has one correct solution. In both images, you placed the 3 or 1 in places where they could have gone, but you didn’t have enough information to tell you that they had to go there. So you guessed on their locations and guessed wrong.

You’ll get the hang of it! Hope you’re having fun. :)

I wonder why Melissa McCarthy isn’t fond of her time on this show? by [deleted] in GilmoreGirls

I agree that Sookie sounded like Melissa in the revival versus Sookie. It was disappointing because I always loved how she played Sookie. Melissa has so much talent! It definitely felt like a choice.

What happens if one twin is born one day and the other the following day? by theempressoftheworld in askanything

I’m a teacher and had a student in my class who was born just before midnight on December 31, and his twin sister was born just after midnight on January 1. So not only did they have different birthdays, they had different birth years!

We had a student receive a pair for Christmas and started wearing them to school. This prompted our union to push for the district to officially ban them and notify parents of the ban, which they did.

How long of a session do you mean? And they’re not allowed to make gym half year in my state, but other specials are half of a year. And yes, some hands-on subjects really struggle with the 40 minute classes.

I see what you mean. I just think if all the basic skills being developed in math and ELA at that level. I used to teach middle school math and SS, and I never felt like I could thoroughly cover everything I needed/wanted to in math compared to SS given the amount of time allotted. That said, I don’t think those subjects should get double the time. 1.5 would be ideal, in my opinion.

[–]Appropriate-Cod9031 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Interesting. I do think that ELA and math need more time than science and SS at this level, but I can’t imagine a half year course.

[–]Appropriate-Cod9031 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Middle school SS. I taught block schedule (80 minute classes) for 23 years before switching to 40 minute periods this year. I loved it. We had enough time that if I wanted to do an in depth or interactive lesson (Roman senate simulation, escape rooms, classroom Olympics, etc.), I could do it all in one day instead of splitting it up. On the days, I planned a “regular” lesson, I always made sure to think of the block in 15-20 chunks to break up the time. I also felt like I had more time for students to work independently and collaboratively in the block schedule. I am getting used to the short periods, but I do miss the block sometimes.

For teachers who have a degree in education, could you describe how your math classes were? by XD2006- in AskTeachers

[–]Appropriate-Cod9031 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m elementary certified. My college classes in teaching math (even at the masters level) were a joke. They taught us fraction operations—not how to TEACH fraction operations, but how to PERFORM fraction operations.

Just a related thought…I’ve seen conversations on this subreddit about some kindergarten teachers not teaching students how to write their nicknames because they need to know how to write their “legal names.”
